14:2 Cognovitque David quod confirmasset eum Dominus in regem super Israel, et sublevatum esset regnum suum super populum ejus Israel.
*H And David perceived that the Lord had confirmed him king over Israel, and that his kingdom was exalted over his people Israel.

And the Philistines heard that they had anointed David to be king over Israel: and they all came to seek David: and when David heard of it, he went down to a strong hold.

And David consulted the Lord, saying: Shall I go up against the Philistines, and wilt thou deliver them into my hand? And the Lord said to him: Go up, and I will deliver them into thy hand.

14:11 Cumque illi ascendissent in Baalpharasim, percussit eos ibi David, et dixit : Divisit Deus inimicos meos per manum meam, sicut dividuntur aquae : et idcirco vocatum est nomen illius loci Baalpharasim.
*H And when they were come to Baalpharasim, David defeated them there, and he said: God hath divided my enemies by my hand, as waters are divided: and therefore the name of that place was called Baalpharasim.

14:12 Dereliqueruntque ibi deos suos, quos David jussit exuri.
*H And they left there their gods, and David commanded that they should be burnt.
Ver. 12. Burnt, conformably to Deut. vii. 25. These idols were commonly made of wood, and covered with plates of gold, &c. The Philistines took them along with them to battle, as the Hebrews carried the ark on many occasions. The Greeks, at the siege of Troy, had their gods on board their vessels; (Iliad ix.) and the Romans had theirs on their ensigns, in their wars.
Καὶ ἐγκατέλιπον ἐκεῖ τοὺς θεοὺς αὐτῶν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι· καὶ εἶπε Δαυὶδ κατακαῦσαι ἐν πυρί.
וַ/יַּעַזְבוּ שָׁ֖ם אֶת אֱלֹֽהֵי/הֶ֑ם וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר דָּוִ֔יד וַ/יִּשָּׂרְפ֖וּ בָּ/אֵֽשׁ
14:13 Alia etiam vice Philisthiim irruerunt, et diffusi sunt in valle.
Another time also the Philistines made an irruption, and spread themselves abroad in the valley.
Καὶ προσέθεντο ἔτι ἀλλόφυλοι, καὶ συνέπεσαν ἔτι ἐν τῇ κοιλάδι τῶν γιγάντων.
וַ/יֹּסִ֤יפוּ עוֹד֙ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַֽ/יִּפְשְׁט֖וּ בָּ/עֵֽמֶק
14:14 Consuluitque rursum David Deum, et dixit ei Deus : Non ascendas post eos : recede ab eis, et venies contra illos ex adverso pyrorum.
*H And David consulted God again, and God said to him: Go not up after them, turn away from them, and come upon them over against the pear trees.

14:15 Cumque audieris sonitum gradientis in cacumine pyrorum, tunc egredieris ad bellum : egressus est enim Deus ante te, ut percutiat castra Philisthiim.
*H And when thou shalt hear the sound of one going in the tops of the pear trees, then shalt thou go out to battle. For God is gone out before thee to strike the army of the Philistines.
Ver. 15. Tops, or on the height. God sent an invisible army to David's assistance.
Καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῷ ἀκοῦσαί σε τὴν φωνὴν τοῦ συσσεισμοῦ αὐτῶν ἄκρων τῶν ἀπίων, τότε εἰσελεύσῃ εἰς τὸν πόλεμον, ὅτι ἐξῆλθεν ὁ Θεὸς ἔμπροσθέν σου τοῦ πατάξαι τὴν παρεμβολὴν τῶν ἀλλοφύλων.
וִ֠/יהִי כְּֽ/שָׁמְעֲ/ךָ֞ אֶת ק֤וֹל הַ/צְּעָדָה֙ בְּ/רָאשֵׁ֣י הַ/בְּכָאִ֔ים אָ֖ז תֵּצֵ֣א בַ/מִּלְחָמָ֑ה כִּֽי יָצָ֤א הָֽ/אֱלֹהִים֙ לְ/פָנֶ֔י/ךָ לְ/הַכּ֖וֹת אֶת מַחֲנֵ֥ה פְלִשְׁתִּֽים
14:16 Fecit ergo David sicut praeceperat ei Deus, et percussit castra Philisthinorum, de Gabaon usque Gazera.
*H And David did as God had commanded him, and defeated the army of the Philistines, slaying them from Gabaon to Gazera.
