Genesis 1 11 Et ait : Germinet terra herbam virentem, et facientem semen, et lignum pomiferum faciens fructum juxta genus suum, cujus semen in semetipso sit super terram. Et factum est ita. And he said: let the earth bring forth green herb, and such as may seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after its kind, which may have seed in itself upon the earth. And it was so done.

And to Adam he said: Because thou hast hearkened to the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee, that thou shouldst not eat, cursed is the earth in thy work: with labour and toil shalt thou eat thereof all the days of thy life.

And he said: Behold Adam is become as one of us, knowing good and evil: now therefore lest perhaps he put forth his hand and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever. Genesis 22 3 Igitur Abraham de nocte consurgens, stravit asinum suum, ducens secum duos juvenes, et Isaac filium suum : cumque concidisset ligna in holocaustum, abiit ad locum quem praeceperat ei Deus. So Abraham rising up in the night, saddled his ass, and took with him two young men, and Isaac his son: and when he had cut wood for the holocaust, he went his way to the place which God had commanded him.

The Lord also said to Moses: Say to Aaron, Take thy rod; and stretch forth thy hand upon the waters of Egypt, and upon their rivers, and streams and pools, and all the ponds of waters, that they may be turned into blood: and let blood be in all the land of Egypt, both in vessels of wood and of stone. And it answered them: If, indeed, you mean to make me king, come ye, and rest under my shadow: but if you mean it not, let fire come out from the bramble, and devour the cedars of Libanus.

Give orders, therefore, that thy servants cut me down cedar trees, out of Libanus, and let my servants be with thy servants: and I will give thee the hire of thy servants whatsoever thou wilt ask: for thou knowest how there is not among my people a man that has skill to hew wood like to the Sidonians. And Ornan said to David: Take it, and let my lord the king do all that pleaseth him: and moreover the oxen also I give for a holocaust, and the drays for wood, and the wheat for the sacrifice: I will give it all willingly.
And the cedar trees were without number, which the Sidonians, and Tyrians brought to David.

Behold I in my poverty have prepared the charges of the house of the Lord, of gold a hundred thousand talents, and of silver a million of talents: but of brass, and of iron there is no weight, for the abundance surpasseth all account: timber also and stones I have prepared for all the charges.
1_Paralipomenon 22 15 Habes quoque plurimos artifices, latomos, et caementarios, artificesque lignorum, et omnium artium ad faciendum opus prudentissimos, Thou hast also workmen in abundance, hewers of stones, and masons, and carpenters, and of all trades the most skilful in their work, Καὶ μετὰ σοῦ πρόσθες εἰς πλῆθος ποιούντων ἔργα, τεχνῖται καὶ οἰκοδόμοι λίθων, καὶ τέκτονες ξύλων, καὶ πᾶς σοφὸς ἐν παντὶ ἔργῳ,
1_Paralipomenon 29 2 Ego autem totis viribus meis praeparavi impensas domus Dei mei. Aurum ad vasa aurea, et argentum in argentea, aes in aenea, ferrum in ferrea, ligna ad lignea : et lapides onychinos, et quasi stibinos, et diversorum colorum, omnemque pretiosum lapidem, et marmor Parium abundantissime : And I with all my ability have prepared the expenses for the house of my God. Gold for vessels of gold, and silver for vessels of silver, brass for things of brass, iron for things of iron, wood for things of wood: and onyx stones, and stones like alabaster, and of divers colours, and all manner of precious stones, and marble of Paros in great abundance.
Send me therefore a skilful man, that knoweth how to work in gold, and in silver, in brass, and in iron, in purple, in scarlet and in blue, and that hath skill in engraving, with the artificers, which I have with me in Judea and Jerusalem, whom David my father provided.
Send me therefore a skilful man, that knoweth how to work in gold, and in silver, in brass, and in iron, in purple, in scarlet and in blue, and that hath skill in engraving, with the artificers, which I have with me in Judea and Jerusalem, whom David my father provided. 2_Paralipomenon 2 8 Sed et ligna cedrina mitte mihi, et arceuthina, et pinea de Libano : scio enim quod servi tui noverint caedere ligna de Libano : et erunt servi mei cum servis tuis, Send me also cedars, and fir trees, and pine trees from Libanus: for I know that thy servants are skilful in cutting timber in Libanus, and my servants shall be with thy servants,
To provide me timber in abundance. For the house which I desire to build, is to be exceeding great, and glorious.
The wheat therefore, and the barley and the oil, and the wine, which thou, my lord, hast promised, send to thy servants.
2_Paralipomenon 3 10 Fecit etiam in domo Sancti sanctorum cherubim duos, opere statuario : et texit eos auro. He made also in the house of the holy of holies two cherubims of image work: and he overlaid them with gold.
2_Paralipomenon 7 13 Si clausero caelum, et pluvia non fluxerit, et mandavero et praecepero locustae ut devoret terram, et misero pestilentiam in populum meum : If I shut up heaven, and there fall no rain, or if I give orders, and command the locust to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among my people: Ἐὰν συσχῶ τὸν οὐρανὸν καὶ μὴ γένηται ὑετὸς, καὶ ἐὰν ἐντείλωμαι τῇ ἀκρίδι καταφαγεῖν τὸ ξύλον, καὶ ἐὰν ἀποστείλω θάνατον ἐν τῷ λαῷ μου,
2_Paralipomenon 9 10 Sed et servi Hiram cum servis Salomonis attulerunt aurum de Ophir, et ligna thyina, et gemmas pretiosissimas : And the servants also of Hiram, with the servants of Solomon, brought gold from Ophir, and thyine trees, and most precious stones: Καὶ οἱ παῖδες Σαλωμὼν καὶ οἱ παῖδες Χιρὰμ ἔφερον χρυσίον τῷ Σαλωμὼν ἐκ Σουφὶρ, καὶ ξύλα πεύκινα, καὶ λίθον τίμιον.
And the king made of the thyine trees stairs in the house of the Lord, and in the king's house, and harps and psalteries for the singing men: never were there seen such trees in the land of Juda.
Then king Asa took all Juda, and they carried away from Rama the stones, and the timber that Baasa had prepared for the building: and he built with them Gabaa, and Maspha.
2_Paralipomenon 28 4 Sacrificabat quoque, et thymiama succendebat in excelsis, et in collibus, et sub omni ligno frondoso. He sacrificed also, and burnt incense in the high places, and on the hills, and under every green tree.
But they gave it to the artificers, and to the masons, to buy stones out of the quarries, and timber for the couplings of the building, and to rafter the houses, which the kings of Juda had destroyed.
And they gave money to hewers of stones and to masons: and meat and drink, and oil to the Sidonians and Tyrians, to bring cedar trees from Libanus to the sea of Joppe, according to the orders which Cyrus king of the Persians had given them.
Be it known to the king, that we went to the province of Judea, to the house of the great God, which they are building with unpolished stones, and timber is laid in the walls: and this work is carried on diligently and advanceth in their hands.
Esdras 6 11 A me ergo positum est decretum : ut omnis homo qui hanc mutaverit jussionem, tollatur lignum de domum ipsius, et erigatur, et configatur in eo, domus autem ejus publicetur. And I have made a decree: That if any whosoever, shall alter this commandment, a beam be taken from his house, and set up, and he be nailed upon it, and his house be confiscated.
Let mercy forget him: may worms be his sweetness: let him be remembered no more, but be broken in pieces as an unfruitful tree.
Job 30 4 Et mandebant herbas, et arborum cortices, et radix juniperorum erat cibus eorum : And they ate grass, and barks of trees, and the root of junipers was their food.
Job 33 11 Posuit in nervo pedes meos ; custodivit omnes semitas meas. He hath put my feet in the stocks, he hath observed all my paths.
Job 41 19 Non fugabit eum vir sagittarius : in stipulam versi sunt ei lapides fundae. The archer shall not put him to flight, the stones of the sling are to him like stubble.
A diligent woman is a crown to her husband: and she that doth things worthy of confusion, is as rottenness in his bones.
As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire, so an angry man stirreth up strife.
Ecclesiastes 2 5 feci hortos et pomaria, et consevi ea cuncti generis arboribus ; I made gardens, and orchards, and set them with trees of all kinds,
And I made me ponds of water, to water therewith the wood of the young trees,
He that removeth stones, shall be hurt by them: and he that cutteth trees, shall be wounded by them.
Ecclesiastes 11 3 Si repletae fuerint nubes, imbrem super terram effundent. If the clouds be full, they will pour out rain upon the earth. If the tree fall to the south, or to the north, in what place soever it shall fall, there shall it be.
Canticle 3 9 Ferculum fecit sibi rex Salomon de lignis Libani ; King Solomon hath made him a litter of the wood of Libanus:
Spikenard and saffron, sweet cane and cinnamon, with all the trees of Libanus, myrrh and aloes with all the chief perfumes.
Isaias 7 2 debellare eam. And they told the house of David, saying: Syria hath rested upon Ephraim, and his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the woods are moved with the wind.
Isaias 7 4 et dices ad eum : [Vide ut sileas ; noli timere, et cor tuum ne formidet a duabus caudis titionum fumigantium istorum, in ira furoris Rasin, regis Syriae, et filii Romeliae ; And thou shalt say to him: See thou be quiet: fear not, and let not thy heart be afraid of the two tails of these firebrands, smoking with the wrath of the fury of Rasin king of Syria, and of the son of Romelia.
Isaias 10 15 Numquid gloriabitur securis contra eum qui secat in ea ? aut exaltabitur serra contra eum a quo trahitur ? Shall the axe boast itself against him that cutteth with it? or shall the saw exalt itself against him by whom it is drawn? as if a rod should lift itself up against him that lifteth it up, and a staff exalt itself, which is but wood.
The fir trees also have rejoiced over thee, and the cedars of Libanus, saying: Since thou hast slept, there hath none come up to cut us down.
Isaias 34 13 Et orientur in domibus ejus spinae et urticae, et paliurus in munitionibus ejus ; et erit cubile draconum, et pascua struthionum. And thorns and nettles shall grow up in its houses, and the thistle in the fortresses thereof: and it shall be the habitation of dragons, and the pasture of ostriches.
And they have cast their gods into the fire, for they were not gods, but the works of men's hands, of wood and stone: and they broke them in pieces.
Isaias 44 13 Artifex lignarius extendit normam, formavit illud in runcina, fecit illud in angularibus, et in circino tornavit illud, et fecit imaginem viri quasi speciosum hominem habitantem in domo ; The carpenter hath stretched out his rule, he hath formed it with a plane: he hath made it with corners, and hath fashioned it round with the compass: and he hath made the image of a man as it were a beautiful man dwelling in a house.
He hath cut down cedars, taken the holm, and the oak that stood among the trees of the forest: he hath planted the pine tree, which the rain hath nourished.
Isaias 44 23 Laudate, caeli, quoniam misericordiam fecit Dominus ; jubilate, extrema terrae ; resonate, montes, laudationem, saltus et omne lignum ejus, quoniam redemit Dominus Jacob, et Israel gloriabitur.] Give praise, O ye heavens, for the Lord hath shewn mercy: shout with joy, ye ends of the earth: ye mountains, resound with praise, thou, O forest, and every tree therein: for the Lord hath redeemed Jacob, and Israel shall be glorified.
Assemble yourselves, and come, and draw near together, ye that are saved of the Gentiles: they have no knowledge that set up the wood of their graven work, and pray to a god that cannot save.
Isaias 55 12 Quia in laetitia egrediemini, et in pace deducemini ; montes et colles cantabunt coram vobis laudem, et omnia ligna regionis plaudent manu. For you shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall sing praise before you, and all the trees of the country shall clap their hands.
Isaias 56 3 Et non dicat filius advenae qui adhaeret Domino, dicens : Separatione dividet me Dominus a populo suo ; et non dicat eunuchus : Ecce ego lignum aridum. And let not the son of the stranger, that adhereth to the Lord, speak, saying: The Lord will divide and separate me from his people. And let not the eunuch say: Behold I am a dry tree.
For brass I will bring gold, and for iron I will bring silver: and for wood brass, and for stones iron: and I will make thy visitation peace, and thy overseers justice.
They shall not build, and another inhabit; they shall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree, so shall be the days of my people, and the works of their hands shall be of long continuance.
