Ver. 2. Sabbath. The frequent repetition of this precept, cannot escape the notice of the attentive reader. The sabbath was a distinctive mark of the Jews, and was generally observed by them with the utmost care, and even with scrupulosity. H. — They were not allowed to do on it any thing that had the appearance of servility, if it could be avoided without serious inconveniences. But in any urgent necessity of the sick, &c. they might provide meat, and do other work, that could not be done before. They might also repel an enemy, water cattle, &c. Though a mere rest be positively ordered, the design of it shewed that the day was to be spent in religious duties, reading the Bible, &c. Josephus assures us, many were so diligent herein, as to know almost the whole law by heart. T.

Ver. 3. No fire, to dress meat. The Rabbins say it is lawful to light a fire, to warm oneself, or for light. But they generally employ some other to do it for them. The Samaritans and Caraites look upon this as an evasion. C. — It was customary to light candles and dress meat before sun-set on Friday. On other festivals, even the greatest, this was not required, as they were not instituted chiefly in memory of God's rest, as the sabbath was. C. xii. 16. H.

Whether Devotion Is a Special Act?
Objection 1: It would seem that devotion is not a special act. That which qualifies other acts is seemingly not a special act. Now devotion seems to qualify other acts, for it is written (2 Paralip. 29:31): "All the multitude offered victims, and praises, and holocausts with a devout mind." Therefore devotion is not a special act.
Obj. 2: Further, no special kind of act is common to various genera of acts. But devotion is common to various genera of acts, namely, corporal and spiritual acts: for a person is said to meditate devoutly and to genuflect devoutly. Therefore devotion is not a special act.
Obj. 3: Further, every special act belongs either to an appetitive or to a cognitive virtue or power. But devotion belongs to neither, as may be seen by going through the various species of acts of either faculty, as enumerated above (I, QQ. 78, seqq.; I-II, Q. 23, A. 4). Therefore devotion is not a special act.
_On the contrary,_ Merits are acquired by acts as stated above (I-II, Q. 21, AA. 34). But devotion has a special reason for merit. Therefore devotion is a special act.
_I answer that,_ Devotion is derived from "devote" [*The Latin _devovere_ means "to vow"]; wherefore those persons are said to be "devout" who, in a way, devote themselves to God, so as to subject themselves wholly to Him. Hence in olden times among the heathens a devotee was one who vowed to his idols to suffer death for the safety of his army, as Livy relates of the two Decii (Decad. I, viii, 9; x, 28). Hence devotion is apparently nothing else but the will to give oneself readily to things concerning the service of God. Wherefore it is written (Ex. 35:20, 21) that "the multitude of the children of Israel . . . offered first-fruits to the Lord with a most ready and devout mind." Now it is evident that the will to do readily what concerns the service of God is a special kind of act. Therefore devotion is a special act of the will.
Reply Obj. 1: The mover prescribes the mode of the movement of the thing moved. Now the will moves the other powers of the soul to their acts, and the will, in so far as it regards the end, moves both itself and whatever is directed to the end, as stated above (I-II, Q. 9, A. 3). Wherefore, since devotion is an act of the will whereby a man offers himself for the service of God Who is the last end, it follows that devotion prescribes the mode to human acts, whether they be acts of the will itself about things directed to the end, or acts of the other powers that are moved by the will.
Reply Obj. 2: Devotion is to be found in various genera of acts, not as a species of those genera, but as the motion of the mover is found virtually in the movements of the things moved.
Reply Obj. 3: Devotion is an act of the appetitive part of the soul, and is a movement of the will, as stated above. _______________________

וְ/כָל הַ֨/נָּשִׁ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר נָשָׂ֥א לִבָּ֛/ן אֹתָ֖/נָה בְּ/חָכְמָ֑ה טָו֖וּ אֶת הָ/עִזִּֽים
35:27 Principes vero obtulerunt lapides onychinos, et gemmas ad superhumerale et rationale,
But the princes offered onyx stones, and precious stones, for the ephod and the rational,
Καὶ οἱ ἄρχοντες ἤνεγκαν τοὺς λίθους τῆς σμαράγδου, καὶ τοὺς λίθους τῆς πληρώσεως εἰς τὴν ἐπωμίδα, καὶ τὸ λογεῖον,
וְ/הַ/נְּשִׂאִ֣ם הֵבִ֔יאוּ אֵ֚ת אַבְנֵ֣י הַ/שֹּׁ֔הַם וְ/אֵ֖ת אַבְנֵ֣י הַ/מִּלֻּאִ֑ים לָ/אֵפ֖וֹד וְ/לַ/חֹֽשֶׁן
35:28 aromataque et oleum ad luminaria concinnanda, et ad praeparandum unguentum, ac thymiama odoris suavissimi componendum.
And spices and oil for the lights, and for the preparing of ointment, and to make the incense of most sweet savour.
καὶ τὰς συνθέσεις, καὶ εἰς τὸ ἔλαιον τῆς χρίσεως, καὶ τὴν συνθεσιν τοῦ θυμιάματος.
וְ/אֶת הַ/בֹּ֖שֶׂם וְ/אֶת הַ/שָּׁ֑מֶן לְ/מָא֕וֹר וּ/לְ/שֶׁ֨מֶן֙ הַ/מִּשְׁחָ֔ה וְ/לִ/קְטֹ֖רֶת הַ/סַּמִּֽים
35:29 Omnes viri et mulieres mente devota obtulerunt donaria, ut fierent opera, quae jusserat Dominus per manum Moysi. Cuncti filii Israel voluntaria Domino dedicaverunt.
All, both men and women, with devout mind offered gifts, that the works might be done which the Lord had commanded by the hand of Moses. All the children of Israel dedicated voluntary offerings to the Lord.
Καὶ πᾶς ἀνὴρ καὶ γυνὴ, ὧν ἔφερεν ἡ διάνοια αὐτῶν εἰσελθόντας ποιεῖν πάντα τὰ ἔργα, ὅσα συνέταξε Κύριος ποιῆσαι αὐτὰ διὰ Μωυσῆ, ἤνεγκαν οἱ υἱοὶ Ἰσραὴλ, ἀφαίρεμα Κυρίῳ.
כָּל אִ֣ישׁ וְ/אִשָּׁ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר נָדַ֣ב לִבָּ/ם֮ אֹתָ/ם֒ לְ/הָבִיא֙ לְ/כָל הַ/מְּלָאכָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר צִוָּ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה לַ/עֲשׂ֖וֹת בְּ/יַד מֹשֶׁ֑ה הֵבִ֧יאוּ בְנֵי יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל נְדָבָ֖ה לַ/יהוָֽה
35:30 Dixitque Moyses ad filios Israel : Ecce, vocavit Dominus ex nomine Beseleel filium Uri, filii Hur de tribu Juda,
And Moses said to the children of Israel: Behold, the Lord hath called by name Beseleel, the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Juda,
Καὶ εἶπε Μωυσῆς τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραὴλ, Ἰδοὺ ἀνακέκληκεν ὁ Θεὸς ἐξ ὀνόματος τὸν Βεσελεὴλ τὸν τοῦ Οὐρείου τὸν Ὢρ, ἐκ τῆς φυλῆς Ἰούδα,
וַ/יֹּ֤אמֶר מֹשֶׁה֙ אֶל בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל רְא֛וּ קָרָ֥א יְהוָ֖ה בְּ/שֵׁ֑ם בְּצַלְאֵ֛ל בֶּן אוּרִ֥י בֶן ח֖וּר לְ/מַטֵּ֥ה יְהוּדָֽה
35:31 implevitque eum spiritu Dei, sapientia et intelligentia, et scientia et omni doctrina,
And hath filled him with the spirit of God, with wisdom and understanding, and knowledge, and all learning,
καὶ ἐνέπλησεν αὐτὸν πνεῦμα θεῖον σοφίας καὶ συνέσεως, καὶ ἐπιστήμης πάντων,
וַ/יְמַלֵּ֥א אֹת֖/וֹ ר֣וּחַ אֱלֹהִ֑ים בְּ/חָכְמָ֛ה בִּ/תְבוּנָ֥ה וּ/בְ/דַ֖עַת וּ/בְ/כָל מְלָאכָֽה
35:32 ad excogitandum, et faciendum opus in auro, et argento, et aere,
To devise and to work in gold and silver and brass,
ἀρχιτεκτονεῖν κατὰ πάντα τὰ ἔργα τῆς ἀρχιτεκτονίας, ποιεῖν τὸ χρυσίον καὶ τὸ ἀργύριον καὶ τὸν χαλκόν,
וְ/לַ/חְשֹׁ֖ב מַֽחַשָׁבֹ֑ת לַ/עֲשֹׂ֛ת בַּ/זָּהָ֥ב וּ/בַ/כֶּ֖סֶף וּ/בַ/נְּחֹֽשֶׁת
35:33 sculpendisque lapidibus, et opere carpentario, quidquid fabre adinveniri potest,
And in engraving stones, and in carpenters' work. Whatsoever can be devised artificially,
καὶ λιθουργῆσαι τὸν λίθον, καὶ κατεργάζεσθαι τὰ ξύλα, καὶ ποιεῖν ἐν παντὶ ἔργῳ σοφίας.
וּ/בַ/חֲרֹ֥שֶׁת אֶ֛בֶן לְ/מַלֹּ֖את וּ/בַ/חֲרֹ֣שֶׁת עֵ֑ץ לַ/עֲשׂ֖וֹת בְּ/כָל מְלֶ֥אכֶת מַחֲשָֽׁבֶת
35:34 dedit in corde ejus : Ooliab quoque filium Achisamech de tribu Dan :
He hath given in his heart: Ooliab also, the son of Achisamech, of the tribe of Dan:
Καὶ προβιβάσαι γε ἔδωκεν ἐν τῇ διανοίᾳ αὐτῷ τε, καὶ τῷ Ἐλιὰβ τῷ τοῦ Ἀχισαμὰκ, ἐκ φυλῆς Δάν·
וּ/לְ/הוֹרֹ֖ת נָתַ֣ן בְּ/לִבּ֑/וֹ ה֕וּא וְ/אָֽהֳלִיאָ֥ב בֶּן אֲחִיסָמָ֖ךְ לְ/מַטֵּה דָֽן
35:35 ambos erudivit sapientia, ut faciant opera abietarii, polymitarii, ac plumarii, de hyacintho ac purpura, coccoque bis tincto, et bysso, et texant omnia, ac nova quaeque reperiant.
Both of them hath he instructed with wisdom, to do carpenters' work, and tapestry, and embroidery in blue and purple, and scarlet twice dyed, and fine linen, and to weave all things, and to invent all new things.
Καὶ ἐνέπλησεν αὐτοὺς σοφίας, συνέσεως, διανοίας, πάντα συνιέναι ποιῆσαι τὰ ἔργα τοῦ ἁγίου, καὶ τὰ ὑφαντὰ καὶ ποικιλτὰ ὑφάναι τῷ κοκκίνῳ, καὶ τῇ βύσσῳ, ποιεῖν πᾶν ἔργον ἀρχιτεκτονίας, ποικιλίας.
מִלֵּ֨א אֹתָ֜/ם חָכְמַת לֵ֗ב לַ/עֲשׂוֹת֮ כָּל מְלֶ֣אכֶת חָרָ֣שׁ וְ/חֹשֵׁב֒ וְ/רֹקֵ֞ם בַּ/תְּכֵ֣לֶת וּ/בָֽ/אַרְגָּמָ֗ן בְּ/תוֹלַ֧עַת הַ/שָּׁנִ֛י וּ/בַ/שֵּׁ֖שׁ וְ/אֹרֵ֑ג עֹשֵׂי֙ כָּל מְלָאכָ֔ה וְ/חֹשְׁבֵ֖י מַחֲשָׁבֹֽת
