Ver. 1. Lord. Thus the prophets insinuate that they are not the authors but the ministers of God's word. W.

ΛΟΓΟΣ Κυρίου, ὃς ἐγενήθη πρὸς Σοφονίαν τὸν τοῦ Χουσὶ, υἱὸν Γοδολίου, τοῦ Ἀμορίου τοῦ Ἐζεκίου, ἐν ἡμέραις Ἰωσίου υἱοῦ Ἀμὼν βασιλέως Ἰούδα.
דְּבַר יְהוָ֣ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָיָ֗ה אֶל צְפַנְיָה֙ בֶּן כּוּשִׁ֣י בֶן גְּדַלְיָ֔ה בֶּן אֲמַרְיָ֖ה בֶּן חִזְקִיָּ֑ה בִּ/ימֵ֛י יֹאשִׁיָּ֥הוּ בֶן אָמ֖וֹן מֶ֥לֶךְ יְהוּדָֽה
1:2 [Congregans congregabo omnia a facie terrae, dicit Dominus :
*H Gathering, I will gather together all things from off the face of the land, saith the Lord:


Ver. 2. Gather, &c. That is, I will assuredly take away and wholly consume, either by captivity or death, both men and beasts out of this land. Ch. — To gather commonly implies a benefit, but the sequel shews that the contrary is here meant. W. — It often signifies to kill or bury. Jer. viii. 2. The whole country round Judea to Babylon, shall be a sepulchre for men and beasts. Osee iv. 3. C.

Ἐκλείψει ἐκλιπέτω ἀπὸ προσώπου τῆς γῆς, λέγει Κύριος.
אָסֹ֨ף אָסֵ֜ף כֹּ֗ל מֵ/עַ֛ל פְּנֵ֥י הָ/אֲדָמָ֖ה נְאֻם יְהוָֽה
1:3 congregans hominem et pecus, congregans volatilia caeli et pisces maris : et ruinae impiorum erunt, et disperdam homines a facie terrae, dicit Dominus.
*H I will gather man, and beast, I will gather the birds of the air, and the fishes of the sea: and the ungodly shall meet with ruin: and I will destroy men from off the face of the land, saith the Lord.


Ver. 3. Sea: the waters and air shall be pestilential. H. — S. Jerom frequently observes that when a country is depopulated, as the Roman empire was in his days, the most fertile regions were soon abandoned even by beasts and birds. — Meet. Sept. "be weak." Heb. "I will gather (C. Prot. "consume." H.) scandals (or idols) with the wicked." Sym.

Ἐκλιπέτω ἄνθρωπος καὶ κτήνη, ἐκλιπέτω τὰ πετεινὰ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ οἱ ἰχθύες τῆς θαλάσσης· καὶ ἀσθενήσουσιν οἱ ἀσεβεῖς, καὶ ἐξαρῶ τοὺς ἀνόμους ἀπὸ προσώπου τῆς γῆς, λέγει Κύριος.

1:4 Et extendam manum meam super Judam et super omnes habitantes Jerusalem : et disperdam de loco hoc reliquias Baal, et nomina aedituorum cum sacerdotibus ;
*H And I will stretch out my hand upon Juda, and upon all the inhabitants of Jerusalem: and I will destroy out of this place the remnant of Baal, and the names of the wardens of the temples with the priests:


Ver. 4. Baal. Josias had not yet begun his reformation. 4 K. xxiii. 4. C. — At least he had not brought it to perfection, though from his infancy he had encouraged religion. H. — Wardens of the temples of the idols. Ædituos, in Hebrew, the Cemarim, that is such as kindle the fires or burn incense. Ch. — Lit. "the blacks, (H.) or those in black," whether it alludes to their clothes or to the colour of their bodies, in consequence of their going almost naked. Camilli, which may be derived from this root, (C.) cemarim, (H.) in Tuscan, signifies priests, or rather (C.) children who went naked before them. Macrob. iii. 8. — The priests of Baal appeared in this manner, and cut themselves, (3 K. xviii. 28.) committing great indecencies, while God ordered his ministers to be clothed in white with the utmost gravity. C. — The very remembrance of such idols and priests shall be abolished. Osee ii. 16. They were designed for the worship of fire. Baal was the sun. H.

Καὶ ἐκτενῶ τὴν χεῖρά μου ἐπὶ Ἰούδα, καὶ ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Ἱερουσαλήμ· καὶ ἐξαρῶ ἐκ τοῦ τόπου τούτου τὰ ὀνόματα τῆς Βάαλ, καὶ τὰ ὀνόματα τῶν ἱερέων,

1:5 et eos qui adorant super tecta militiam caeli, et adorant et jurant in Domino, et jurant in Melchom ;
*H And them that worship the host of heaven upon the tops of houses, and them that adore, and swear by the Lord, and swear by Melchom.


Ver. 5. Houses. The roofs were flat. Josias afterwards reformed this abuse. 4 K. xxiii. 5. C. — It continued among the Arabs. Strabo xvii. — Melchom. The idol of the Ammonites. Ch. — Those who join idols with God do not worship Him indeed. W. — Swearing was an act of religion. Mat. v. 33. God will not allow his glory to be given to another. Such lame worship or divided hearts he rejects. 3 K. xviii. 21. C.

1:6 et qui avertuntur de post tergum Domini, et qui non quaesierunt Dominum, nec investigaverunt eum.
And them that turn away from following after the Lord, and that have not sought the Lord, nor searched after him.
καὶ τοὺς ἐκκλίνοντας ἀπὸ τοῦ Κυρίου, καὶ τοὺς μὴ ζητοῦντας τὸν Κύριον, καὶ τοὺς μὴ ἀντεχομένους τοῦ Κυρίου.
וְ/אֶת הַ/נְּסוֹגִ֖ים מֵ/אַחֲרֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַ/אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹֽא בִקְשׁ֥וּ אֶת יְהוָ֖ה וְ/לֹ֥א דְרָשֻֽׁ/הוּ
1:7 Silete a facie Domini Dei, quia juxta est dies Domini : quia praeparavit Dominus hostiam ; sanctificavit vocatos suos.
*H Be silent before the face of the Lord God: for the day of the Lord is near, for the Lord hath prepared a victim, he hath sanctified his guests.


Ver. 7. Silent. Heb. has, (H.) an interjection, (S. Jer.) like our hush. H. — This denotes the importance of what he is going to say. — Guests. The blood of the wicked is his victim. Jer. xlvi. 10. Ezec. xxxix. 17. C. — The day of punishment is commonly styled the day of the Lord. Is. ii. and 1 Cor. iii. W.

Εὐλαβεῖσθε ἀπὸ προσώπου Κυρίου τοῦ Θεοῦ· διότι ἐγγὺς ἡμέρα τοῦ Κυρίου, ὅτι ἡτοίμακε Κύριος τὴν θυσίαν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἡγίακε τοὺς κλητοὺς αὐτοῦ.
הַ֕ס מִ/פְּנֵ֖י אֲדֹנָ֣/י יְהוִ֑ה כִּ֤י קָרוֹב֙ י֣וֹם יְהוָ֔ה כִּֽי הֵכִ֧ין יְהוָ֛ה זֶ֖בַח הִקְדִּ֥ישׁ קְרֻאָֽי/ו
1:8 Et erit : in die hostiae Domini, visitabo super principes, et super filios regis, et super omnes qui induti sunt veste peregrina ;
*H And it shall come to pass in the day of the victim of the Lord, that I will visit upon the princes, and upon the king's sons, and upon all such as are clothed with strange apparel:


Ver. 8. Victim. Heb. "sacrifice." But MS. 1. Camb. has, "in that day, says the Lord," eeva nam being substituted for zebach, (H.) which is "a very remarkable variation." In v. 7. it has Jehovah Elohim printed Adonai Jehovah. Kennicott. — Princes. After the death of Josias all fell to ruin. His sons were deposed, and led into captivity with the chief nobility and priests, who were richly adorned, and imitated the manners of idolaters, or kept the garments of the poor. Ex. xxii. 26. Deut. xxii. 5. 11. &c. C. — All the posterity of Josias was afflicted. Joachaz died in Egypt; Joakim was harassed and put to death; Sedecias taken, and his eyes put out, when his children had been slain. Jechonias, or Joachin, was detained in prison at Babylon for a long time. W.

Καὶ ἔσται, ἐν ἡμέρᾳ θυσίας Κυρίου, καὶ ἐκδικήσω ἐπὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας, καὶ ἐπὶ τὸν οἶκον τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς ἐνδεδυμένους ἐνδύματα ἀλλότρια.
וְ/הָיָ֗ה בְּ/יוֹם֙ זֶ֣בַח יְהוָ֔ה וּ/פָקַדְתִּ֥י עַל הַ/שָּׂרִ֖ים וְ/עַל בְּנֵ֣י הַ/מֶּ֑לֶךְ וְ/עַ֥ל כָּל הַ/לֹּבְשִׁ֖ים מַלְבּ֥וּשׁ נָכְרִֽי
1:9 et visitabo super omnem qui arroganter ingreditur super limen in die illa, qui complent domum Domini Dei sui iniquitate et dolo.
*H And I will visit in that day upon every one that entereth arrogantly over the threshold: them that fill the house of the Lord their God with iniquity and deceit.


Ver. 9. Entereth the temple, as if to shew themselves. Amos vi. 1. Heb. "jumpeth over," &c. denoting the Philistines. Chal. 1 K. v. 5. C. — Sept. "I will take vengeance on all openly before the gate in that day," (H.) on all who have cast themselves out of the Church. S. Jer. — Lord. Heb. "of their masters with," &c. This may relate to the Philistines, (C.) or to those who made the house of God a place of traffic, (Mat. xxi. 13.) and offered victims unjustly acquired. H.

Καὶ ἐκδικήσω ἐμφανῶς ἐπὶ τὰ πρόπυλα ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ, τοὺς πληροῦντας τὸν οἶκον Κυρίου Θεοῦ αὐτῶν ἀσεβείας καὶ δόλου.
וּ/פָקַדְתִּ֗י עַ֧ל כָּל הַ/דּוֹלֵ֛ג עַל הַ/מִּפְתָּ֖ן בַּ/יּ֣וֹם הַ/ה֑וּא הַֽ/מְמַלְאִ֛ים בֵּ֥ית אֲדֹנֵי/הֶ֖ם חָמָ֥ס וּ/מִרְמָֽה
1:10 Et erit in die illa, dicit Dominus, vox clamoris a porta piscium, et ululatus a Secunda, et contritio magna a collibus.
*H And there shall be in that day, saith the Lord, the noise of a cry from the fish gate, and a howling from the Second, and a great destruction from the hills.


Ver. 10. Gate, looking towards Joppe. S. Jer. — The news of the defeat at Mageddo came this way, or the cries of the Philistines were heard. C. — Second. A part of the city so called, (Ch.) built by Manasses on the same side of the city, 2 Par. xxxiii. 14. C.

Καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ, λέγει Κύριος, φωνὴ κραυγῆς ἀπὸ πύλης ἀποκεντούντων, καὶ ὀλολυγμὸς ἀπὸ τῆς δευτέρας, καὶ συντριμμὸς μέγας ἀπὸ τῶν βουνῶν.
וְ/הָיָה֩ בַ/יּ֨וֹם הַ/ה֜וּא נְאֻם יְהוָ֗ה ק֤וֹל צְעָקָה֙ מִ/שַּׁ֣עַר הַ/דָּגִ֔ים וִֽ/ילָלָ֖ה מִן הַ/מִּשְׁנֶ֑ה וְ/שֶׁ֥בֶר גָּד֖וֹל מֵ/הַ/גְּבָעֽוֹת
1:11 Ululate, habitatores Pilae : conticuit omnis populus Chanaan, disperierunt omnes involuti argento.
*H Howl, ye inhabitants of the Morter. All the people of Chanaan is hush, all are cut off that were wrapped up in silver.


Ver. 11. The Morter: (Maktesh) a valley in or near Jerusalem. Ch. — All the people shall suffer in the city. Sanct. T. — Mactes was rendered famous by Samson, (Judg. xv. 19.) and was in or near the country of the Philistines, who seem to be designated. The original is variously interpreted. C. — Sept. "of the city cut in pieces, because all the people resemble Chanaan." H. — Chanaan. So he calls the Jews, from their following the wicked ways of the Chanaanites. Ch. — The merchants (Grot.) are confounded, or (H.) the Philistines are still meant. C.

Θρηνήσατε οἱ κατοικοῦντες τὴν κατακεκομμένην, ὅτι ὡμοιώθη πᾶς ὁ λαὸς Χαναὰν, καὶ ἐξωλοθρεύθησαν πάντες οἱ ἐπῃρμένοι ἀργυρίῳ.
הֵילִ֖ילוּ יֹשְׁבֵ֣י הַ/מַּכְתֵּ֑שׁ כִּ֤י נִדְמָה֙ כָּל עַ֣ם כְּנַ֔עַן נִכְרְת֖וּ כָּל נְטִ֥ילֵי כָֽסֶף
1:12 Et erit in tempore illo : scrutabor Jerusalem in lucernis, et visitabo super viros defixos in faecibus suis, qui dicunt in cordibus suis : Non faciet bene Dominus, et non faciet male.
*H And it shall come to pass at that time, that I will search Jerusalem with lamps, and will visit upon the men that are settled on their lees: that say in their hearts: The Lord will not do good, nor will he do evil.


Ver. 12. Lamps, with the utmost diligence, (Lu. xv. 8.) so that none shall escape even in the most filthy places. C. — The Romans found many Jews in the common sewers. Jos. Bel. vii. 16. 20. and 26. — Lees. That is, the wealthy, and such as live at their ease, resting upon their riches, like wine upon the lees. Ch. — Evil, denying Providence. C.

Καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ, ἐξερευνήσω τὴν Ἱερουσαλὴμ μετὰ λύχνου, καὶ ἐκδικήσω ἐπὶ τοὺς ἄνδρας τοὺς καταφρονοῦντας ἐπὶ τὰ φυλάγματα αὐτῶν· οἱ δὲ λέγοντες ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις αὐτῶν, οὐ μὴ ἀγαθοποιήσῃ Κύριος, οὐδὲ μὴ κακώσῃ·

1:13 Et erit fortitudo eorum in direptionem, et domus eorum in desertum : et aedificabunt domos, et non habitabunt ; et plantabunt vineas, et non bibent vinum earum.

וְ/הָיָ֤ה חֵילָ/ם֙ לִ/מְשִׁסָּ֔ה וּ/בָתֵּי/הֶ֖ם לִ/שְׁמָמָ֑ה וּ/בָנ֤וּ בָתִּים֙ וְ/לֹ֣א יֵשֵׁ֔בוּ וְ/נָטְע֣וּ כְרָמִ֔ים וְ/לֹ֥א יִשְׁתּ֖וּ אֶת יֵינָֽ/ם
1:14 Juxta est dies Domini magnus : juxta est, et velox nimis. Vox diei Domini amara : tribulabitur ibi fortis.
*H The great day of the Lord is near, it is near and exceeding swift: the voice of the day of the Lord is bitter, the mighty man shall there meet with tribulation.


Ver. 14. Near. When all these miseries shall overtake the wicked, (W.) after the death of Josias. 4 K. xxi. 14. C. — The mighty. Sept. "and dreadful, powerful is the day of," &c. — Meet. Prot. "cry bitterly." H.

Καὶ τὸ ἀργύριον αὐτῶν καὶ τὸ χρυσίον αὐτῶν οὐ μὴ δύνηται ἐξελέσθαι αὐτοὺς ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ὀργῆς Κυρίου· καὶ ἐν πυρὶ ζήλου αὐτοῦ καταναλωθήσεται πᾶσα ἡ γῆ, διότι συντέλειαν καὶ σπουδὴν ποιήσει ἐπὶ πάντας τοὺς κατοικοῦντας τὴν γῆν.
