11:1 Et dixit Dominus ad Moysen : Adhuc una plaga tangam Pharaonem et Aegyptum, et post haec dimittet vos, et exire compellet.
*H And the Lord said to Moses: Yet one plague more will I bring upon Pharao and Egypt, and after that he shall let you go, and thrust you out.


Ver. 1. To Moses, before he was gone out from Pharao. M. — This revelation had been made at Mount Horeb. Calmet places the three first verses within a parenthesis; and the fourth, &c. he supposes that Moses addressed to the king at the last interview. C. x. 29. Kennicott maintains, that the Samaritan copy preserves the unity of this awful transaction almost in its original perfection, by preserving the speech of God to Moses, part of which the Hebrew seems to address to Pharao.

Εἶπε δὲ Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν, ἔτι μίαν πληγὴν ἐγὼ ἐπάξω ἐπὶ Φαραὼ, καὶ ἐπʼ Αἴγυπτον, καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἐξαποστελεῖ ὑμᾶς ἐντεῦθεν· ὅταν δὲ ἐξαποστέλλῃ ὑμᾶς σὺν παντὶ, ἐκβαλεῖ ὑμᾶς ἐκβολῇ.
וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֶל מֹשֶׁ֗ה ע֣וֹד נֶ֤גַע אֶחָד֙ אָבִ֤יא עַל פַּרְעֹה֙ וְ/עַל מִצְרַ֔יִם אַֽחֲרֵי כֵ֕ן יְשַׁלַּ֥ח אֶתְ/כֶ֖ם מִ/זֶּ֑ה כְּ/שַׁ֨לְּח֔/וֹ כָּלָ֕ה גָּרֵ֛שׁ יְגָרֵ֥שׁ אֶתְ/כֶ֖ם מִ/זֶּֽה
11:2 Dices ergo omni plebi ut postulet vir ab amico suo, et mulier a vicina sua, vasa argentea et aurea.
*H Therefore thou shalt tell all the people, that every man ask of his friend, and every woman of her neighbour, vessels of silver and of gold.


Ver. 2. Ask; "not borrow," as the Protestants translate; nor "jewels of silver," but vessels, such as the princes offered at the dedication of the tabernacle, Num. vii. The Sam. and Sept. add "and raiment," which they also asked for, (C. xii. 35,) according to God's command. C. iii. 22. Kenn. 1. Dis. p. 391.

Λάλησον οὖν κρυφῇ εἰς τὰ ὦτα τοῦ λαοῦ, καὶ αἰτησάτω ἕκαστος παρὰ τοῦ πλησίον σκεύη ἀργυρᾶ καὶ χρυσὰ καὶ ἱματισμόν.
דַּבֶּר נָ֖א בְּ/אָזְנֵ֣י הָ/עָ֑ם וְ/יִשְׁאֲל֞וּ אִ֣ישׁ מֵ/אֵ֣ת רֵעֵ֗/הוּ וְ/אִשָּׁה֙ מֵ/אֵ֣ת רְעוּתָ֔/הּ כְּלֵי כֶ֖סֶף וּ/כְלֵ֥י זָהָֽב
11:3 Dabit autem Dominus gratiam populo suo coram Aegyptiis. Fuitque Moyses vir magnus valde in terra Aegypti coram servis Pharaonis et omni populo.
*H And the Lord will give favour to his people in the sight of the Egyptians. And Moses was a very great man in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharao's servants, and of all the people.


Ver. 3. The Lord. The Sam. makes this a continuation of God's speech, "and I will give this people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they shall give them what they ask. — 4. For, about midnight, I will go forth into the midst of the land of Egypt. — 5. And every first-born in the land of Egypt shall die, &c. (as in our fifth verse.) — 6. And there, &c. — 7. But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue against man, nor even against beast, that thou mayest know that Jehovah doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel. — 8. And thou also shalt be greatly honoured in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharao's servants, and in the sight of the people. — 9. Then said Moses unto Pharao, Thus sayeth Jehovah: Israel is my son, my first-born; and I said unto thee, Let my son go, that he may serve me. — 10. But thou hast refused to let him go; behold! therefore Jehovah slayeth thy son, thy first-born." — 11. And Moses said, (as above, v. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. 9. 10.) The Jews have retained the parts of the 3d and 8th verses, which were honourable to their nation, but they have given them as an historical narration. The 9th and 10th verses in the Sam. copy, record what God had before commanded Moses to declare. C. iv. 22. 33. As, therefore, all had been once written in the Heb. text, the transcribers might probably think themselves dispensed from repeating the same things; and thus they might change some passages, and still repel the accusation of any wilful corruption, which seems to be the meaning of Ben Chaim's preface to Bomberg's Heb. Bible; where he acknowledges 13 such alterations made in the copies which were presented to King Ptolemy, and translated by the Sept. Ken. Dis. 2. p. 310. — Moses. This exaltation of Moses and the people, took place only after the slaughter of the first-born. C. xii. 36. Hence the Sept. observes here, the Egyptians gave or lent them (echresan) all. H. — The greatness and dignity of Moses, impressed the king with awe, and made the people more willing to assist the Hebrews. M.

Κύριος δὲ ἔδωκε τὴν χάριν τῷ λαῷ αὐτοῦ ἐναντίον τῶν Αἰγυπτίων, καὶ ἔχρησαν αὐτοῖς· καὶ ὁ ἄνθρωπος Μωυσῆς μέγας ἐγενήθη σφόδρα ἐναντίον τῶν Αἰγυπτίων, καὶ ἐναντίον Φαραὼ, καὶ ἐναντίον τῶν θεραπόντων ἀτοῦ.

11:4 Et ait : Haec dicit Dominus : Media nocte egrediar in Aegyptum :
*H And he said: Thus saith the Lord: At midnight I will enter into Egypt:


Ver. 4. I will enter, by means of a good angel, (Wisd. xviii. 14. S. Chrys.) or by evil angels. Ps. lxxvii. 49. S. Aug. ibid. C. — Moses spoke this on the morning of the 14th Nisan; and that same night, after the paschal lamb had been eaten, the dreadful carnage commenced. M.

Καὶ εἶπε Μωυσῆς, τάδε λέγει Κύριος, περὶ μέσας νύκτας ἐγὼ εἰσπορεύομαι εἰς μέσον Αἰγύπτου·
וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר מֹשֶׁ֔ה כֹּ֖ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֑ה כַּ/חֲצֹ֣ת הַ/לַּ֔יְלָה אֲנִ֥י יוֹצֵ֖א בְּ/ת֥וֹךְ מִצְרָֽיִם
11:5 et morietur omne primogenitum in terra Aegyptiorum, a primogenito Pharaonis, qui sedet in solio ejus, usque ad primogenitum ancillae quae est ad molam, et omnia primogenita jumentorum.
*H And every firstborn in the land of the Egyptians shall die, from the firstborn of Pharao who sitteth on his throne, even to the firstborn of the handmaid that is at the mill, and all the firstborn of beasts.


Ver. 5. Mill. The vilest slaves were thus employed in a sort of prison. C. xii. 21. God makes no distinction between the king and the beggar. Death levels all.

Καὶ τελευτήσει πᾶν πρωτότοκον ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ, ἀπὸ πρωτοτόκου Φαραὼ, ὃς κάθηται ἐπὶ τοῦ θρόνου, καὶ ἕως πρωτοτόκου τῆς θεραπαίνης τῆς παρὰ τὸν μύλον, καὶ ἕως πρωτοτοκου παντος κτήνους.
וּ/מֵ֣ת כָּל בְּכוֹר֮ בְּ/אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַיִם֒ מִ/בְּכ֤וֹר פַּרְעֹה֙ הַ/יֹּשֵׁ֣ב עַל כִּסְא֔/וֹ עַ֚ד בְּכ֣וֹר הַ/שִּׁפְחָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר אַחַ֣ר הָ/רֵחָ֑יִם וְ/כֹ֖ל בְּכ֥וֹר בְּהֵמָֽה
11:6 Eritque clamor magnus in universa terra Aegypti, qualis nec ante fuit, nec postea futurus est.
And there shall be a great cry in all the land of Egypt, such as neither hath been before, nor shall be hereafter.
Καὶ ἔσται κραυγὴ μεγάλη κατὰ πᾶσαν γῆν Αἰγύπτου, ἥτις τοιαύτη οὐ γέγονε, καὶ τοιαύτη οὐκ ἔτι προστεθήσεται.
וְ/הָֽיְתָ֛ה צְעָקָ֥ה גְדֹלָ֖ה בְּ/כָל אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם אֲשֶׁ֤ר כָּמֹ֨/הוּ֙ לֹ֣א נִהְיָ֔תָה וְ/כָמֹ֖/הוּ לֹ֥א תֹסִֽף
11:7 Apud omnes autem filios Israel non mutiet canis ab homine usque ad pecus : ut sciatis quanto miraculo dividat Dominus Aegyptios et Israel.
*H But with all the children of Israel there shall not a dog make the least noise, from man even to beast; that you may know how wonderful a difference the Lord maketh between the Egyptians and Israel.


Ver. 7. Dog. They shall enjoy a profound peace, (Judith xi. 5,) while Egypt is in tears. Calmet here inserts the speech from the Samaritan copy, "And the man Moses;" &c. (v. 3. and seq.) deeming it essential to the context, and very agreeable to the spirit of Moses, who has many repetitions. H.

Καὶ ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραὴλ οὐ γρύξει κύων τῇ γλώσσῃ αὐτοῦ, ἀπὸ ἀνθρώπου ἕως κτήνους· ὅπως εἰδῇς ὅσα παραδοξάσει Κύριος ἀνὰ μέσον τῶν Αἰγυπτίων καὶ τοῦ Ἰσραήλ.
וּ/לְ/כֹ֣ל בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל לֹ֤א יֶֽחֱרַץ כֶּ֨לֶב֙ לְשֹׁנ֔/וֹ לְ/מֵ/אִ֖ישׁ וְ/עַד בְּהֵמָ֑ה לְמַ֨עַן֙ תֵּֽדְע֔וּ/ן אֲשֶׁר֙ יַפְלֶ֣ה יְהוָ֔ה בֵּ֥ין מִצְרַ֖יִם וּ/בֵ֥ין יִשְׂרָאֵֽל
11:8 Descendentque omnes servi tui isti ad me, et adorabunt me, dicentes : Egredere tu, et omnis populus qui subjectus est tibi : post haec egrediemur.
And all these thy servants shall come down to me, and shall worship me, saying: Go forth thou, and all the people that is under thee: after that we will go out.
Καὶ καταβήσονται πάντες οἱ παῖδές σου οὗτοι πρός με, καὶ προσκυνήσουσί με, λέγοντες, ἔξελθε σὺ, καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαός σου, οὗ σὺ ἀφηγῇ· καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἐξελεύσομαι· ἐξῆλθε δὲ Μωυσῆς ἀπὸ Φαραὼ μετὰ θυμοῦ.
וְ/יָרְד֣וּ כָל עֲבָדֶי/ךָ֩ אֵ֨לֶּה אֵלַ֜/י וְ/הִשְׁתַּֽחֲוּוּ לִ֣/י לֵ/אמֹ֗ר צֵ֤א אַתָּה֙ וְ/כָל הָ/עָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר בְּ/רַגְלֶ֔י/ךָ וְ/אַחֲרֵי כֵ֖ן אֵצֵ֑א וַ/יֵּצֵ֥א מֵֽ/עִם פַּרְעֹ֖ה בָּ/חֳרִי אָֽף
11:9 Et exivit a Pharaone iratus nimis. Dixit autem Dominus ad Moysen : Non audiet vos Pharao ut multa signa fiant in terra Aegypti.
*H And he went out from Pharao exceeding angry. But the Lord said to Moses: Pharao will not hear you, that many signs may be done in the land of Egypt.

Εἶπε δὲ Κύριος πρὸς Μωυσῆν, οὐκ εἰσακούσεται ὑμῶν Φαραὼ, ἵνα πληθύνων πληθυνῶ μου τὰ σημεῖα, καὶ τὰ τέρατα ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ.
וַ/יֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל מֹשֶׁ֔ה לֹא יִשְׁמַ֥ע אֲלֵי/כֶ֖ם פַּרְעֹ֑ה לְמַ֛עַן רְב֥וֹת מוֹפְתַ֖/י בְּ/אֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם
11:10 Moyses autem et Aaron fecerunt omnia ostenta, quae scripta sunt, coram Pharaone. Et induravit Dominus cor Pharaonis, nec dimisit filios Israel de terra sua.
*H And Moses and Aaron did all the wonders that are written, before Pharao. And the Lord hardened Pharao's heart, neither did he let the children of Israel go out of his land.

Μωσῆς δὲ καὶ Ἀαρὼν ἐποίησαν πάντα τὰ σημεῖα καὶ τὰ τέρατα ταῦτα ἐν γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ ἐναντίον Φαραώ· ἐσκλήρυνε δὲ Κύριος τὴν καρδίαν Φαραὼ, καὶ οὐκ εἰσήκουσεν ἐξαποστεῖλαι τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰσραὴλ ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου.
