12:2 Fecitque Joas rectum coram Domino cunctis diebus quibus docuit eum Jojada sacerdos.
*H And Joas did that which was right before the Lord all the days that Joiada, the priest, taught him.
Ver. 2. Taught him. Joiada lived, at least, till the 23d year of the reign of Joas, (v. 6.) and the king seems to have persevered some time longer in virtue.
12_3 Καὶ ἐποίησεν Ἰωὰς τὸ εὐθὲς ἐνώπιον Κυρίου πάσας τὰς ἡμέρας ἃς ἐφώτισεν αὐτὸν Ἰωδαὲ ὁ ἱερεύς.

12:3 Verumtamen excelsa non abstulit : adhuc enim populus immolabat, et adolebat in excelsis incensum.
*H But yet he took not away the high places: for the people still sacrificed and burnt incense in the high places.
Ver. 3. Places, to the true God, but contrary to his law. The king was deterred from overturning these altars, through human policy; which did not meet with the divine approbation. C. See 3 K. xxii. 24. Deut. xii. 8.

*H And Joas said to the priests: all the money of the sanctified things, which is brought into the temple of the Lord by those that pass, which is offered for the price of a soul, and which of their own accord, and of their own free heart, they bring into the temple of the Lord:
Ver. 4. Sanctified. That is, dedicated to God's service. Ch. — Lit. "of the holy" sanctorum. H. — For the use of the sanctuary. — Pass, as strangers, (3 K. viii. 41.) desiring sacrifice to be offered, (Grotius) or who pass in the roll of those who have attained their 20th year, and are obliged to pay half a sicle. Ex. xx. 13. 14. This was the first fund which had been turned to a different purpose by the priests, (C.) under the wicked kings. H. — Soul. that is, the ordinary oblation, which every soul was to offer by the law. Exod. xxx. Ch. — Or, this was a second fund arising from the redemption of vows. Lev. xxvii. 2. — Lord. Voluntary contributions, like that of the widow, (Luke xxi. 2.) were also recommended; and Joas sent Levites throughout the land, every year, to collect what they could, for the reparation of the temple. 2 Par. xxiv. 5.

Ver. 6. Temple. It is not known when the king gave his orders; but they were executed with negligence, as they seemed to interfere (C.) with the emoluments assigned by the law to the Levites. 2 Par. xxiv. 5. H. — The latter Jews were obliged to pay half a sicle towards the repairs of the temple. T.

12:8 Prohibitique sunt sacerdotes ultra accipere pecuniam a populo, et instaurare sartatecta domus.

*H And Joiada, the high priest, took a chest, and bored a hole in the top, and set it by the altar at the right hand of them that came into the house of the Lord; and the priests that kept the doors, put therein all the money that was brought to the temple of the Lord.
Ver. 9. By the altar, yet without the enclosure, that any person might freely put in what he thought proper. 2 Par. xxiv. 8. Priests were still appointed to watch, that no fraud was committed: and they counted the money which the law ordained to be paid. Josephus (Bel. vi. 5.) speaks of many coffers; one might be near the altar, and another out of the door. M.

And made the repairs: and to them that cut stones, and to buy timber, and stones to be hewed, that the repairs of the house of the Lord might be completely finished, and wheresoever there was need of expenses to uphold the house.
12_13 καὶ τοῖς τειχισταῖς, καὶ τοῖς λατόμοις τῶν λίθων τοῦ κτήσασθαι ξύλα καὶ λίθους λατομητοὺς τοῦ κατασχεῖν τὸ βεδὲκ οἴκου Κυρίου, εἰς πάντα ὅσα ἐξωδιάσθη ἐπὶ τὸν οἶκον τοῦ κραταιῶσαι.

12:13 Verumtamen non fiebant ex eadem pecunia hydriae templi Domini, et fuscinulae, et thuribula, et tubae, et omne vas aureum et argenteum, de pecunia quae inferebatur in templum Domini.
*H But there were not made of the same money for the temple of the Lord, bowls, or fleshhooks, or censers, or trumpets, or any vessel of gold and silver, of the money that was brought into the temple of the Lord:

For it was given to them that did the work, that the temple of the Lord might be repaired.
12_15 ὅτι τοῖς ποιοῦσι τὰ ἔργα δώσουσιν αὐτό· καὶ ἐκραταίωσαν ἐν αὐτῷ τὸν οἶκον Κυρίου.

12:15 et non fiebat ratio iis hominibus qui accipiebant pecuniam ut distribuerent eam artificibus, sed in fide tractabant eam.
*H And they reckoned not with the men that received the money to distribute it to the workmen, but they bestowed it faithfully.

12:16 Pecuniam vero pro delicto, et pecuniam pro peccatis non inferebant in templum Domini, quia sacerdotum erat.
*H But the money for trespass, and the money for sins, they brought not into the temple of the Lord, because it was for the priests.
Ver. 16. Sins. These terms seem to be synonymous, though they may be distinguished. Lev. iv. 2. and v. 15. If any one forgot to pay tithes, he was bound to make full reparation to the priests; (Tostat.) and the money which was given to them by strangers, to offer sacrifice, was not taken from them. C.
12_17 Ἀργύριον περὶ ἁμαρτίας, καὶ ἀργύριον περὶ πλημμελείας, ὅ, τι εἰσηνέχθη ἐν οἴκῳ Κυρίου, τοῖς ἱερεῦσιν ἐγένετο.

Ver. 17. Then. After the death of Joiada, the king gave way to the greatest excesses of idolatry, and even murdered the son of his greatest benefactor. Hereupon the justice of God fell heavy upon him; Geth was taken, Jerusalem only saved by giving up all the sacred treasures, &c.: yea, the very next year, Hazael returned, routed the forces of Juda, and wounded the king, who on his return to the palace was murdered by conspirators, (C.) to revenge the death of Zacharias. 2 Par. xxiv. 25. Joseph. ix. 8.

Ver. 18. Joram, &c. These are accused of plundering the temple, 2 Par. xxiv. 7. But they might make some presents, through ostentation. How many rob the poor, while they erect magnificent altars to the God of the poor! C.
12_19 Καὶ ἔλαβεν Ἰωὰς βασιλεὺς Ἰούδα πάντα τὰ ἅγια ὅσα ἡγίασεν Ἰωσαφὰτ καὶ Ἰωρὰμ καὶ Ὀχοζίας οἱ πατέρες αὐτοῦ καὶ βασιλεῖς Ἰούδα, καὶ τὰ ἅγια αὐτοῦ, καὶ πᾶν τὸ χρυσίον τὸ εὑρεθὲν ἐν θησαυροῖς οἴκου Κυρίου καὶ οἴκου τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ ἀπέστειλεν τῷ Ἀζαὴλ βασιλεῖ Συρίας, καὶ ἀνέβη ἀπὸ Ἱερουσαλήμ.
12_19 וַ/יִּקַּ֞ח יְהוֹאָ֣שׁ מֶֽלֶךְ יְהוּדָ֗ה אֵ֣ת כָּל הַ/קֳּדָשִׁ֡ים אֲשֶׁר הִקְדִּ֣ישׁוּ יְהוֹשָׁפָ֣ט וִ/יהוֹרָם֩ וַ/אֲחַזְיָ֨הוּ אֲבֹתָ֜י/ו מַלְכֵ֤י יְהוּדָה֙ וְ/אֶת קֳדָשָׁ֔י/ו וְ/אֵ֣ת כָּל הַ/זָּהָ֗ב הַ/נִּמְצָ֛א בְּ/אֹצְר֥וֹת בֵּית יְהוָ֖ה וּ/בֵ֣ית הַ/מֶּ֑לֶךְ וַ/יִּשְׁלַ֗ח לַֽ/חֲזָאֵל֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ אֲרָ֔ם וַ/יַּ֖עַל מֵ/עַ֥ל יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם
12:19 Reliqua autem sermonum Joas, et universa quae fecit, nonne haec scripta sunt in libro verborum dierum regum Juda ?
And the rest of the acts of Joas, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the words of the days of the kings of Juda?
12_20 Καὶ τὰ λοιπὰ τῶν λόγων Ἰωὰς καὶ πάντα ὅσα ἐποίησεν, οὐκ ἰδοὺ ταῦτα γεγραμμένα ἐπὶ βιβλίῳ λόγων τῶν ἡμερῶν τοῖς βασιλεῦσιν Ἰούδα;
12_20 וְ/יֶ֛תֶר דִּבְרֵ֥י יוֹאָ֖שׁ וְ/כָל אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֑ה הֲ/לוֹא הֵ֣ם כְּתוּבִ֗ים עַל סֵ֛פֶר דִּבְרֵ֥י הַ/יָּמִ֖ים לְ/מַלְכֵ֥י יְהוּדָֽה
12:20 Surrexerunt autem servi ejus, et conjuraverunt inter se, percusseruntque Joas in domo Mello in descensu Sella.
*H And his servants arose, and conspired among themselves, and slew Joas, in the house of Mello, in the descent of Sella.

12_21 Καὶ ἀνέστησαν οἱ δοῦλοι αὐτοῦ καὶ ἔδησαν πάντα σύνδεσμον, καὶ ἐπάταξαν τὸν Ἰωὰς ἐν οἴκῳ Μαλλὼ τῷ ἐν Σελά.
12_21 וַ/יָּקֻ֥מוּ עֲבָדָ֖י/ו וַ/יִּקְשְׁרֽוּ קָ֑שֶׁר וַ/יַּכּוּ֙ אֶת יוֹאָ֔שׁ בֵּ֥ית מִלֹּ֖א הַ/יּוֹרֵ֥ד סִלָּֽא
12:21 Josachar namque filius Semaath, et Jozabad filius Somer servi ejus, percusserunt eum, et mortuus est : et sepelierunt eum cum patribus suis in civitate David : regnavitque Amasias filius ejus pro eo.
*H For Josachar the son of Semaath, and Jozabad the son of Somer his servant, struck him, and he died: and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David; and Amasias, his son, reigned in his stead.
Ver. 21. Josachar, or Zabad, the son of Semmaath, an Ammonitess, and Jozabad, the son of Semarith, a Moabitess. Par. Both their mothers were of foreign extraction. C. — People have frequently two names. — Somer is the father of Jozabad. M. — David. Achaz was treated in like manner. The fear of this infamy might tend to keep the kings in awe. After death, the kings of Egypt might be accused, and deprived of sepulture, if their crimes deserved it: as many of them were. Diod. i. p. 46. 12_22 Καὶ Ἰεζιρχὰρ υἱὸς Ἱεμουὰθ, καὶ Ἰεζεβοὺθ ὁ υἱὸς αὐτοῦ Σωμὴρ, οἱ δοῦλοι αὐτοῦ, ἐπάταξαν αὐτὸν καὶ ἀπέθανε, καὶ ἔθαψαν αὐτὸν μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ ἑν πόλει Δαυίδ· καὶ ἐβασίλευσεν Ἀμεσσείας υἱὸς αὐτοῦ ἀντʼ αὐτοῦ.
12_22 וְ/יוֹזָבָ֣ד בֶּן שִׁ֠מְעָת וִ/יהוֹזָבָ֨ד בֶּן שֹׁמֵ֤ר עֲבָדָי/ו֙ הִכֻּ֣/הוּ וַ/יָּמֹ֔ת וַ/יִּקְבְּר֥וּ אֹת֛/וֹ עִם אֲבֹתָ֖י/ו בְּ/עִ֣יר דָּוִ֑ד וַ/יִּמְלֹ֛ךְ אֲמַצְיָ֥ה בְנ֖/וֹ תַּחְתָּֽי/ו
