9:1 Eliseus autem prophetes vocavit unum de filiis prophetarum, et ait illi : Accinge lumbos tuos, et tolle lenticulam olei hanc in manu tua, et vade in Ramoth Galaad.

9:2 Cumque veneris illuc, videbis Jehu filium Josaphat filii Namsi : et ingressus suscitabis eum de medio fratrum suorum, et introduces in interius cubiculum.

9:3 Tenensque lenticulam olei, fundes super caput ejus, et dices : Haec dicit Dominus : Unxi te regem super Israel. Aperiesque ostium, et fugies, et non ibi subsistes.
*H Then taking the little bottle of oil, thou shalt pour it on his head, and shalt say: Thus saith the Lord: I have anointed thee king over Israel. And thou shalt open the door and flee, and shalt not stay there.

9:4 Abiit ergo adolescens puer prophetae in Ramoth Galaad,
So the young man, the servant of the prophet, went away to Ramoth Galaad,
Καὶ ἐπορεύθη τὸ προδάριον ὁ παιφήτης εἰς Ῥεμμὼθ Γαλαάδ.
וַ/יֵּ֧לֶךְ הַ/נַּ֛עַר הַ/נַּ֥עַר הַ/נָּבִ֖יא רָמֹ֥ת גִּלְעָֽד
9:5 et ingressus est illuc : ecce autem principes exercitus sedebant : et ait : Verbum mihi ad te, o princeps. Dixitque Jehu : Ad quem ex omnibus nobis ? At ille dixit : Ad te, o princeps.
And went in thither: and behold, the captains of the army were sitting, and he said: I have a word to thee, O prince. And Jehu said: Unto whom of us all? And he said: To thee, O prince.
Καὶ εἰσῆλθε· καὶ ἰδοὺ οἱ ἄρχοντες τῆς δυνάμεως ἐκάθηντο, καὶ εἶπε, λόγος μοι πρὸς σὲ ὁ ἄρχων· καὶ εἶπεν Ἰοὺ, πρὸς τίνα ἐκ πάντων ἡμῶν; καὶ εἶπε, πρὸς σέ ὁ ἄρχων.

9:6 Et surrexit, et ingressus est cubiculum : at ille fudit oleum super caput ejus, et ait : Haec dicit Dominus Deus Israel : Unxi te regem super populum Domini Israel,
And he arose, and went into the chamber: and he poured the oil upon his head, and said: Thus saith the Lord God of Israel: I have anointed thee king over Israel, the people of the Lord.

9:7 et percuties domum Achab domini tui, et ulciscar sanguinem servorum meorum prophetarum, et sanguinem omnium servorum Domini de manu Jezabel.
*H And thou shalt cut off the house of Achab, thy master, and I will revenge the blood of my servants, the prophets, and the blood of all the servants of the Lord, at the hand of Jezabel.

*H And the dogs shall eat Jezabel, in the field of Jezrahel, and there shall be no one to bury her. And he opened the door and fled.
Ver. 10. Field, between the inner and the outer wall. Her body shall be left exposed to be eaten by the dogs.
Καὶ τὴν Ἰεζάβελ καταφάγονται οἱ κύνες ἐν τῇ μερίδι Ἰσζράελ, καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ὁ θάπτων· καὶ ἤνοιξε τὴν θύραν καὶ ἔφυγε.

9:11 Jehu autem egressus est ad servos domini sui : qui dixerunt ei : Rectene sunt omnia ? quid venit insanus iste ad te ? Qui ait eis : Nostis hominem, et quid locutus sit.
*H Then Jehu went forth to the servants of his Lord: and they said to him: Are all things well? why came this madman to thee? And he said to them: You know the man, and what he said.
Ver. 11. Madman. The extravagant motions of the false prophets caused even the true ones to be treated with contempt. Warriors are but too apt to give way to sentiments of irreligion, (M.) and to despise men who lead a retired and penitential life. H. — How often were Ezechiel and Jeremias treated as fools, (Ezec. xxxiii. 30. Jer. xxix. 26. C.) as well as our divine Saviour? The pagans looked upon those who were inspired by Apollo in the same light. H. — Ut primum cessit furor & rabida ora quierunt, Virg. Æneid vi. "What authority has this fury, which you call divine, that the insane should behold what escapes the observation of the wise, and that he who has lost common (human) sense should possess divine?" ea videat insanus, & is qui humanos sensus amiserit, divinos assecutus sit? Cicero Divin. ii.
Καὶ Ἰοὺ ἐξῆλθε πρὸς τοὺς παῖδας τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ, καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, εἰρήνη; τί ὅτι εἰσῆλθεν ὁ ἐπίληπτος οὗτος πρὸς σέ; καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, ὑμεῖς οἴδατε τὸν ἄνδρα καὶ τὴν ἀδολεσχίαν αὐτοῦ.

9:12 At ille responderunt : Falsum est, sed magis narra nobis. Qui ait eis : Haec et haec locutus est mihi, et ait : Haec dicit Dominus : Unxi te regem super Israel.
*H But they answered: It is false; but rather do thou tell us. And he said to them: Thus and thus did he speak to me: and he said: Thus saith the Lord: I have anointed thee king over Israel.
Ver. 12. False. We know not who he was, or what he said; though, from his conduct, we judge that he was one of the prophets. Hence they so readily acquiesced in saluting Jehu king. H.
Καὶ εἶπον, ἄδικον, ἀπάγγειλον δὴ ἡμῖν. Καὶ εἶπεν Ἰοὺ πρὸς αὐτοὺς, οὕτω καὶ οὕτω ἐλάλησε πρὸς μὲ, λέγων, καὶ εἶπε, τάδε λέγει Κύριος, κέχρικά σε εἰς βασιλέα ἐπὶ Ἰσραήλ.

9:13 Festinaverunt itaque, et unusquisque tollens pallium suum posuerunt sub pedibus ejus in similitudinem tribunalis, et cecinerunt tuba, atque dixerunt : Regnavit Jehu.
*H Then they made haste, and taking every man his garment, laid it under his feet, after the manner of a judgment seat, and they sounded the trumpet, and said: Jehu is king.
Ver. 13. Garment, out of respect, as the multitude honoured Jesus Christ, Mat. xxi. 7. The pagans sometimes did the like when they carried their idols in procession. Plut. in Alcib. The king of Persia walked on carpets in the court of the guards, who were styled immortal. Athen. 12. — Trumpet, according to custom, 3 K. i. 40. C.

9:14 Conjuravit ergo Jehu filius Josaphat filii Namsi contra Joram : porro Joram obsederat Ramoth Galaad, ipse et omnis Israel contra Hazael regem Syriae :
*H So Jehu, the son of Josaphat, the son of Namsi, conspired against Joram. Now Joram had besieged Ramoth Galaad, he, and all Israel, fighting with Hazael, king of Syria:

9:15 et reversus fuerat ut curaretur in Jezrahel propter vulnera, quia percusserant eum Syri praeliantem contra Hazael regem Syriae. Dixitque Jehu : Si placet vobis, nemo egrediatur profugus de civitate, ne vadat, et nuntiet in Jezrahel.
And was returned to be healed in Jezrahel of his wounds; for the Syrians had wounded him, when he fought with Hazael, king of Syria. And Jehu said: If it please you, let no man go forth or flee out of the city, lest he go, and tell in Jezrahel.
'Καὶ ἀπέστρεψεν Ἰωρὰμ ὁ βασιλεὺς ἰατρευθῆναι ἐν Ἰσζράελ ἀπὸ τῶν πληγῶν ὧν ἔπαισαν αὐτὸν οἱ Σύροι ἐν τῷ πολεμεῖν αὐτὸς μετὰ Ἀζαὴλ βασιλέως Συρίας.

9:16 Et ascendit, et profectus est in Jezrahel : Joram enim aegrotabat ibi, et Ochozias rex Juda descenderat ad visitandum Joram.
And he got up, and went into Jezrahel for Joram was sick there, and Ochozias king of Juda, was come down to visit Joram.
Καὶ ἵππευσε καὶ ἐπορεύθη Ἰοὺ, καὶ κατέβη εἰς Ἰεζράελ, ὅτι Ἰωρὰμ βασιλεὺς Ἰσραὴλ ἐθεραπεύετο ἐν τῷ Ἰεζράελ ἀπὸ τῶν τοξευμάτων, ὧν κατετόξευσαν αὐτὸν οἱ Ἀραμὶν ἐν τῇ Ῥαμμὰθ ἐν τῷ πολέμῳ μετὰ Ἁζαὴλ βασιλέως Συρίας, ὅτι αὐτὸς δυνατὸς καὶ ἀνὴρ δυνάμεως· καὶ Ὀχοζίας βασιλεὺς Ἰούδα κατέβη ἰδεῖν τὸν Ἰωράμ.

9:17 Igitur speculator qui stabat super turrim Jezrahel, vidit globum Jehu venientis, et ait : Video ego globum. Dixitque Joram : Tolle currum, et mitte in occursum eorum, et dicat vadens : Rectene sunt omnia ?
*H The watchman therefore, that stood upon the tower of Jezrahel, saw the troop of Jehu coming, and said: I see a troop. And Joram said: Take a chariot, and send to meet them, and let him that goeth say: Is all well?
Ver. 17. Watchman. Such were very common, (2 K. xviii. 24. 1 Mac. xii. 26.) and as the army was at Ramoth, the attention of the people would be drawn that way. C. — Troop. Sept. "the dust of the," &c. M.

9:18 Abiit ergo qui ascenderat currum, in occursum ejus, et ait : Haec dicit rex : Pacatane sunt omnia ? Dixitque Jehu : Quid tibi et paci ? transi, et sequere me. Nuntiavit quoque speculator, dicens : Venit nuntius ad eos, et non revertitur.
*H So there went one in a chariot to meet him, and said: Thus saith the king: Are all things peaceable? And Jehu said: What hast thou to do with peace? go behind and follow me. And the watchman told, saying: The messenger came to them, but he returneth not.
Ver. 18. Peace? As this expression sufficiently vindicated the designs of Jehu, he would not suffer the messenger to return before him. H.

9:19 Misit etiam currum equorum secundum : venitque ad eos, et ait : Haec dicit rex : Numquid pax est ? Et ait Jehu : Quid tibi et paci ? transi, et sequere me.
And he sent a second chariot of horses: and he came to them, and said: Thus saith the king: Is there peace? And Jehu said: What hast thou to do with peace? pass, and follow me.

9:20 Nuntiavit autem speculator, dicens : Venit usque ad eos, et non revertitur : est autem incessus quasi incessus Jehu filii Namsi, praeceps enim graditur.
*H And the watchman told, saying: He came even to them, but returneth not: and the driving is like the driving of Jehu, the son of Namsi; for he drives furiously.
Ver. 20. Furiously. The Chal. and Arab. say, "he marcheth slowly." But the whole conduct of Jehu was marked with eagerness and severity, like that of Cato of Utica, (Grotius) and the utmost expedition was requisite.

9:21 Et ait Joram : Junge currum. Junxeruntque currum ejus, et egressus est Joram rex Israel, et Ochozias rex Juda, singuli in curribus suis, egressique sunt in occursum Jehu, et invenerunt eum in agro Naboth Jezrahelitae.
And Joram said: Make ready the chariot. And they made ready his chariot: and Joram, king of Israel, and Ochozias, king of Juda, went out, each in his chariot, and they went out to meet Jehu, and met him in the field of Naboth, the Jezrahelite.

9:22 Cumque vidisset Joram Jehu, dixit : Pax est, Jehu ? At ille respondit : Quae pax ? adhuc fornicationes Jezabel matris tuae, et veneficia ejus multa, vigent.
*H And when Joram saw Jehu, he said: Is there peace, Jehu? And he answered: What peace? so long as the fornications of Jezabel, thy mother, and her many sorceries, are in their vigour.

But Jehu bent his bow with his hand, and shot Joram between the shoulders: and the arrow went out through his heart, and immediately he fell in his chariot.

Jezabel thought that she would thus command respect or love, (Abulensis) she was extremely imprudent and rash, in her present condition. Pride might suggest that she ought not to appear unadorned. C. Cyp. — Sardanapalus had his eyes and his eye-lids painted. Athen. xii. The Arabs, &c. think that this black colour protects the eyes against the sun-beams. Valle ii. Ep. 17. To express the affection of Jezabel, Heb. has, "she placed her eyes in antimony," (fuc, or puc, whence the Latin fucus is visibly derived) as if she plunged them in it. C.

9:37 et erunt carnes Jezabel sicut stercus super faciem terrae in agro Jezrahel, ita ut praetereuntes dicant : Haeccine est illa Jezabel ?
*H And the flesh of Jezabel shall be as dung upon the face of the earth in the field of Jezrahel; so that they who pass by shall say: Is this that same Jezabel?
