55:1 In finem, pro populo qui a sanctis longe factus est. David in tituli inscriptionem, cum tenuerunt eum Allophyli in Geth.
*H Unto the end, for a people that is removed at a distance form the sanctuary: for David, for an inscription of a title (or pillar) when the Philistines held him in Geth.


Ver. 1. Geth. Before (Bert.) or after his escape to the cave of Odollam, (C.) he composed this psalm, to comfort his followers with the consideration of God's protection. H. — See 1 K. xxii. and Ps. xv. The title is variously rendered. S. Jer. "to the victor for the dumb dove," &c. Prot. "upon Jonath elem rechokim Michtam of David." This is to elude the difficulty, and we might as well adhere to the Sept. who seem to have only added, "from the sanctuary." The psalm may suit any one in distress, (Bert.) unable to attend the public service, (W.) or it may be understood of our Saviour's passion. Bert.

Εἰς τὸ τέλος, ὑπὲρ τοῦ λαοῦ τοῦ ἀπὸ τῶν ἁγίων μεμακρυμμένου, τῷ Δαυὶδ εἰς στηλογραφίαν, ὁπότε ἐκράτησαν αὐτὸν οἱ ἀλλόφυλοι ἐν Γέθ.
לַ/מְנַצֵּ֤חַ ׀ עַל ־ י֬וֹנַת אֵ֣לֶם רְ֭חֹקִים לְ/דָוִ֣ד מִכְתָּ֑ם בֶּֽ/אֱחֹ֨ז אֹת֖/וֹ פְלִשְׁתִּ֣ים בְּ/גַֽת ׃
55:2 [Miserere mei, Deus, quoniam conculcavit me homo ; tota die impugnans, tribulavit me.
*H Have mercy on me, O God, for man hath trodden me under foot; all the day long he hath afflicted me fighting against me.


Ver. 2. Man. All combine against me. C. — The sins of every man oppressed Jesus Christ. Bert. — All who live piously, must suffer many attacks. W.

Ἐλεήσον με ὁ Θεὸς, ὅτι κατεπάτησέ με ἄνθρωπος, ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν πολεμῶν ἔθλιψέ με.
חָנֵּ֣/נִי אֱ֭לֹהִים כִּֽי ־ שְׁאָפַ֣/נִי אֱנ֑וֹשׁ כָּל ־ הַ֝/יּ֗וֹם לֹחֵ֥ם יִלְחָצֵֽ/נִי ׃
55:3 Conculcaverunt me inimici mei tota die, quoniam multi bellantes adversum me.
My enemies have trodden on me all the day long; for they are many that make war against me.
Κατεπάτησάν με οἱ ἐχθροί μου ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἀπὸ ὕψους ἡμέρας, ὅτι πολλοὶ οἱ πολεμοῦντές με.
שָׁאֲפ֣וּ שׁ֭וֹרְרַ/י כָּל ־ הַ/יּ֑וֹם כִּֽי ־ רַבִּ֨ים לֹחֲמִ֖ים לִ֣/י מָרֽוֹם ׃
55:4 Ab altitudine diei timebo : ego vero in te sperabo.
*H From the height of the day I shall fear: but I will trust in thee.


Ver. 4. The height of the day. That is, even at noon day, when the sun is the highest, I am still in danger. Ch. — Heb. "many fight against me from an elevation, or from day-break." — Fear. Many prefix a negation, which S. Jerom rejects, (ad Sun.) explaining this height of the divine majesty. C. — David felt the impressions of fear; but corrected them by his confidence in God. W.

Φοβηθήσονται, ἐγὼ δὲ ἐλπιῶ ἐπὶ σοί.
י֥וֹם אִירָ֑א אֲ֝נִ֗י אֵלֶ֥י/ךָ אֶבְטָֽח ׃
55:5 In Deo laudabo sermones meos ; in Deo speravi : non timebo quid faciat mihi caro.
*H In God I will praise my words, in God I have put my trust: I will not fear what flesh can do against me.


Ver. 5. My words. The words or promises God has made in my favour. Ch. — Praising God (H.) removed the dejection of David. Euseb. — Detested. Prot. "wrest." They put an evil construction upon what I say, (H.) and make me their laughing-stock. Ps. xxxvii. 13. C. — But I cease not to proclaim what God has declared in my favour, (H.) or what good I have been enabled to effect by his grace. My enemies may meet to devise my ruin, and to supplant me; yet all in vain. W.

Ἐν τῷ Θεῷ ἐπαινέσω τοὺς λόγους μου, ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν ἐν τῷ Θεῷ ἤλπισα, οὐ φοβηθήσομαι τί ποιήσει μοι σάρξ.
בֵּ/אלֹהִים֮ אֲהַלֵּ֪ל דְּבָ֫ר֥/וֹ בֵּ/אלֹהִ֣ים בָּ֭טַחְתִּי לֹ֣א אִירָ֑א מַה ־ יַּעֲשֶׂ֖ה בָשָׂ֣ר לִֽ/י ׃
55:6 Tota die verba mea execrabantur ; adversum me omnes cogitationes eorum in malum.
All the day long they detested my words: all their thoughts were against me unto evil.
Ὅλην τὴν ἡμέραν τοὺς λόγους μου ἐβδελύσσοντο, κατʼ ἐμοῦ πάντες οἱ διαλογισμοὶ αὐτῶν εἰς κακόν.
כָּל ־ הַ֭/יּוֹם דְּבָרַ֣/י יְעַצֵּ֑בוּ עָלַ֖/י כָּל ־ מַחְשְׁבֹתָ֣/ם לָ/רָֽע ׃
55:7 Inhabitabunt, et abscondent ; ipsi calcaneum meum observabunt. Sicut sustinuerunt animam meam,
They will dwell and hide themselves: they will watch my heel. As they have waited for my soul,
Παροικήσουσι καὶ κατακρύψουσιν αὐτοὶ, τὴν πτέρναν μου φυλάξουσι· καθάπερ ὑπέμεινα τῇ ψυχῇ μου.
יָג֤וּרוּ ׀ יצפינו הֵ֭מָּה עֲקֵבַ֣/י יִשְׁמֹ֑רוּ כַּ֝/אֲשֶׁ֗ר קִוּ֥וּ נַפְשִֽׁ/י ׃
55:8 pro nihilo salvos facies illos ; in ira populos confringes.
*H For nothing shalt thou save them: in thy anger thou shalt break the people in pieces. O God,


Ver. 8. For nothing shalt thou save them. That is, since they lie in wait to ruin my soul, thou shalt for no consideration favour or assist them, but execute thy justice upon them. Ch.

Ὑπὲρ τοῦ μηθενὸς σώσεις αὐτοὺς ἐν ὀργῇ λαοὺς κατάξεις· ὁ Θεὸς
עַל ־ אָ֥וֶן פַּלֶּט ־ לָ֑/מוֹ בְּ֝/אַ֗ף עַמִּ֤ים ׀ הוֹרֵ֬ד אֱלֹהִֽים ׃
55:9 Deus, vitam meam annuntiavi tibi ; posuisti lacrimas meas in conspectu tuo, sicut et in promissione tua :
*H I have declared to thee my life: thou hast set me tears in thy sight, As also in thy promise.


Ver. 9. I have. Prot. "thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle. Are they not in thy book?" S. Jer. "thou hast numbered my most secret things: place my tears in thy sight," &c. H. — Sept. render the sense clearer. Bert. — God has promised to relieve the distressed, who confided in him.

τὴν ζωήν μου ἐξήγγειλά σοι, ἔθου τὰ δάκρυά μου ἐνώπιόν σου, ὡς καὶ ἐν τῇ ἐπαγγελίᾳ σου.
נֹדִ/י֮ סָפַ֪רְתָּ֫ה אָ֥תָּה שִׂ֣ימָ/ה דִמְעָתִ֣/י בְ/נֹאדֶ֑/ךָ הֲ֝/לֹ֗א בְּ/סִפְרָתֶֽ/ךָ ׃
55:10 tunc convertentur inimici mei retrorsum. In quacumque die invocavero te, ecce cognovi quoniam Deus meus es.
Then shall my enemies be turned back. In what day soever I shall call upon thee, behold I know thou art my God.
Ἐπιστρέψουσιν οἱ ἐχθροί μου εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω, ἐν ᾗ ἂν ἡμέρᾳ ἐπικαλέσωμαί σε· ἰδοὺ ἔγνων ὅτι Θεός μου εἶ σύ.
אָ֥֨ז יָ֘שׁ֤וּבוּ אוֹיְבַ֣/י אָ֭חוֹר בְּ/י֣וֹם אֶקְרָ֑א זֶה ־ יָ֝דַ֗עְתִּי כִּֽי ־ אֱלֹהִ֥ים לִֽ/י ׃
55:11 In Deo laudabo verbum ; in Domino laudabo sermonem. In Deo speravi : non timebo quid faciat mihi homo.
*H In God will I praise the word, in the Lord will I praise his speech. In God have I hoped, I will not fear what man can do to me.


Ver. 11. To me. This is almost a repetition of v. 5. C. — Elohim and Jehova are mentioned (H.) as "the power and eternity" of God gave David the greatest confidence.

Ἐπὶ τῷ Θεῷ αἰνέσω ῥῆμα, ἐπὶ τῷ Κυρίῳ αἰνέσω λόγον. Ἐπὶ τῷ Θεῷ ἤλπισα, οὐ φοβηθήσομαι τί ποιήσει μοι ἄνθρωπος.
בֵּֽ֭/אלֹהִים אֲהַלֵּ֣ל דָּבָ֑ר בַּ֝/יהוָ֗ה אֲהַלֵּ֥ל דָּבָֽר ׃
55:12 In me sunt, Deus, vota tua, quae reddam, laudationes tibi :
*H In me, O God, are vows to thee, which I will pay, praises to thee:


Ver. 12. To thee. Lit. "thy vows." H. — Houbigant chooses rather to follow the Syriac, "with thee, O God, are my vows:" which is clearer, though our version may be well explained, "I will perform my vows to thee," (Bert.) the sacrifice of praises, in this psalm. C. — I will endeavour to comply with my engagements and vows. W.

55_13 Ἐν ἐμοὶ ὁ Θεὸς αἱ εὐχαὶ, ἃς ἀποδώσω αἰνέσεώς σου.
בֵּֽ/אלֹהִ֣ים בָּ֭טַחְתִּי לֹ֣א אִירָ֑א מַה ־ יַּעֲשֶׂ֖ה אָדָ֣ם לִֽ/י ׃
55:13 quoniam eripuisti animam meam de morte, et pedes meos de lapsu, ut placeam coram Deo in lumine viventium.]
*H Because thou hast delivered my soul from death, my feet from falling: that I may please in the sight of God, in the light of the living.


Ver. 13. Living, in my own country, where I am no longer, as formerly during my banishment, in the region of the dead. C. — The Fathers explain this of Jesus Christ, or of eternal glory. Theod. C. — In the true faith and good works, I will strive to please God. W.

55_14 Ὅτι ἐῤῥύσω τὴν ψυχήν μου ἐκ θανάτου, καὶ τοὺς πόδας μου ἐξ ὀλισθήματος, τοῦ εὐαρεστῆσαι ἐνώπιον τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν φωτὶ ζώντων.
עָלַ֣/י אֱלֹהִ֣ים נְדָרֶ֑י/ךָ אֲשַׁלֵּ֖ם תּוֹדֹ֣ת לָֽ/ךְ ׃
