2:1 [Haec dicit Dominus : Super tribus sceleribus Moab, et super quatuor non convertam eum, eo quod incenderit ossa regis Idumaeae usque ad cinerem.
*H Thus saith the Lord: For three crimes of Moab, and for four I will not convert him: because he hath burnt the bones of the king of Edom even to ashes.
Ver. 1. Ashes. Some think that he alludes to 4 K. iii. 27. or rather to some war, the ashes of the dead were disturbed. C. — Both these acts of inhumanity deserved severe punishment. W.

2:2 Et mittam ignem in Moab, et devorabit aedes Carioth : et morietur in sonitu Moab, in clangore tubae.
*H And I will send a fire into Moab, and it shall devour the houses of Carioth: and Moab shall die with a noise, with the sound of the trumpet:
Ver. 2. Fire: war under Ozias. C. — Carioth. Sept. "the cities." Carioth has this meaning, but is was also the name of a great city. Jer. xlviii. 24. H.
2_2 Καὶ ἐξαποστελῶ πῦρ εἰς Μωὰβ, καὶ καταφάγεται τὰ θεμέλια τῶν πόλεων αὐτῆς, καὶ ἀποθανεῖται ἐν ἀδυναμίᾳ Μωὰβ μετὰ κραυγῆς καὶ μετὰ φωνῆς σάλπιγγος.

2:3 Et disperdam judicem de medio ejus, et omnes principes ejus interficiam cum eo, dicit Dominus.]
*H And I will cut off the judge from the midst thereof, and will slay all his princes with him, saith the Lord.
Ver. 3. Judge, ruler, or head, shall be no more.
2_3 Καὶ ἐξολοθρεύσω κριτὴν ἐξ αὐτῆς, καὶ πάντας [ἄρχοντας] αὐτῆς ἀποκτενῶ μετʼ αὐτοῦ, λέγει Κύριος.
וְ/הִכְרַתִּ֥י שׁוֹפֵ֖ט מִ/קִּרְבָּ֑/הּ וְ/כָל שָׂרֶ֛י/הָ אֶהֱר֥וֹג עִמּ֖/וֹ אָמַ֥ר יְהוָֽה
2:4 [Haec dicit Dominus : Super tribus sceleribus Juda, et super quatuor non convertam eum, eo quod abjecerit legem Domini et mandata ejus non custodierit : deceperant enim eos idola sua, post quae abierant patres eorum.
*H Thus saith the Lord: For three crimes of Juda, and for four I will not convert him: because he hath cast away the law of the Lord, and hath not kept his commandments: for their idols have caused them to err, after which their fathers have walked.
Ver. 4. Walked. After Solomon, scarcely a good prince appeared, till the days of Amos. Juda imitated the idolatry of Israel, hoping thus to find assistance. C. — His crime was the more grievous, as they had the law. W.

Ver. 5. Fire. Under Joathan, Rasin, &c. invaded the country. Achaz increased the misery, by applying to the Assyrians. C.

*H Thus saith the Lord: For three crimes of Israel, and for four I will not convert him: because he hath sold the just man for silver, and the poor man for a pair of shoes.
Ver. 6. Just man. Joseph, (Rupert) or our Saviour, (Sanct.) or any other. The expression is proverbial. Ezec. xiii. 19. C. — Israel contemned the law, and adopted the abominations of all. W.

2:7 Qui conterunt super pulverem terrae capita pauperum, et viam humilium declinant : et filius ac pater ejus ierunt ad puellam, ut violarent nomen sanctum meum.
*H They bruise the heads of the poor upon the dust of the earth, and turn aside the way of the humble: and the son and his father have gone to the same young woman, to profane my holy name.
Ver. 7. Humble, provoking him to anger. — Name. Such incests caused infidels to blaspheme. Lev. xviii. 8. C. — They must be punished with severity. W.
2_7 τὰ πατοῦντα ἐπὶ τὸν χοῦν τῆς γῆς, καὶ ἐκονδύλιζον εἰς κεφαλὰς πτωχῶν, καὶ ὁδὸν ταπεινῶν ἐξέκλιναν, καὶ υἱὸς καὶ πατὴρ αὐτοῦ εἰσεπορεύοντο πρὸς τὴν αὐτὴν παιδίσκην, ὅπως βεβηλῶσι τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ Θεοῦ αὐτῶν.

2:8 Et super vestimentis pignoratis accubuerunt juxta omne altare, et vinum damnatorum bibebant in domo Dei sui.
*H And they sat down upon garments laid to pledge by every altar: and drank the wine of the condemned in the house of their God.
Ver. 8. Altar. Herein they offended doubly, (Ex. xxii. 26.) as they used the garments of others to hide their shameful actions. 4 K. xxiii. 7. C. — Sept. "and tying up their garments with cords, they made veils touching the altar, and drank wine procured by calumnies," (H.) or "rapine," &c. Chal. — Condemned by them unjustly, though some think that a very delicious and intoxicating wine is meant, such as was given to people in grief. Prov. xxxi. 6. Mark xv. 23. Helena learnt in Egypt how to compose such wine. Odys. iv. — Feasting in temples on carpets was an ancient custom.
2_8 Καὶ τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτῶν δεσμεύοντες σχοινίοις, παραπετάσματα ἐποίουν ἐχόμενα τοῦ θυσιαστηρίου, καὶ οἶνον ἐκ συκοφαντιῶν ἔπινον ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ Θεοῦ αὐτῶν.
וְ/עַל בְּגָדִ֤ים חֲבֻלִים֙ יַטּ֔וּ אֵ֖צֶל כָּל מִזְבֵּ֑חַ וְ/יֵ֤ין עֲנוּשִׁים֙ יִשְׁתּ֔וּ בֵּ֖ית אֱלֹהֵי/הֶֽם
2:9 Ego autem exterminavi Amorrhaeum a facie eorum, cujus altitudo, cedrorum altitudo ejus, et fortis ipse quasi quercus ; et contrivi fructum ejus desuper, et radices ejus subter.

*H And I raised up of your sons for prophets, and of your young men for Nazarites. Is it not so, O ye children of Israel, saith the Lord?
Ver. 11. Nazarites. Some went secretly to Jerusalem for this purpose; or perhaps they performed these rites illegally at Bethel: for many parts of the law were observed, though not perfectly. C. iv. 4. The Nazarites were in high estimation. Lam. iv. 7. But the dissolute Israelites (C.) derided them as well as the prophets, (H.) and attempted to make them transgress. C.
2_11 Καὶ ἔλαβον ἐκ τῶν υἱῶν ὑμῶν εἰς προφήτας, καὶ ἐκ τῶν νεανίσκων ὑμῶν εἰς ἁγιασμόν· μὴ οὐκ ἔστι ταῦτα υἱοὶ Ἰσραήλ; λέγει Κύριος.

2:12 Et propinabitis nazaraeis vinum, et prophetis mandabitis, dicentes : Ne prophetetis.
And you will present wine to the Nazarites: and command the prophets, saying: Prophesy not.
2_12 Καὶ ἐποτίζετε τοὺς ἡγιασμένους οἶνον, καὶ τοῖς προφήταις ἐνετέλλεσθε λέγοντες, οὐ μὴ προφητεύσητε.

*H Behold, I will screak under you as a wain screaketh that is laden with hay.
Ver. 13. I will screek. Unable to bear any longer the enormous load of your sins, &c. The Spirit of God, as S. Jerom takes notice, accommodates itself to the education of the prophet, and inspires him with encouragements taken from country affairs. Ch. — Sept. "I am overturned." Heb. "pressed." C.

2:14 Et peribit fuga a veloce, et fortis non obtinebit virtutem suam, et robustus non salvabit animam suam :
*H And flight shall perish from the swift, and the valiant shall not possess his strength, neither shall the strong save his life.

And he that holdeth the bow shall not stand, and the swift of foot shall not escape, neither shall the rider of the horse save his life.

And the stout of heart among the valiant shall flee away naked in that day, saith the Lord.
2_16 καὶ ὁ κραταιὸς οὐ μὴ εὑρήσει τὴν καρδίαν αὐτοῦ ἐν δυναστείαις, ὁ γυμνὸς διώξεται ἐν ἐκείνῃ τῇ ἡμέρᾳ, λέγει Κύριος.
