2:1 [Ascendit qui dispergat coram te, qui custodiat obsidionem : contemplare viam, conforta lumbos, robora virtutem valde.
*H He is come up that shall destroy before thy face, that shall keep the siege: watch the way, fortify thy loins, strengthen thy power exceedingly.


Ver. 1. Face, O Juda. Sept. "who blows on thy face, (Gen. ii. 7.) freeing from misery." Here S. Jerom's Gr. copy ends the chap. H. — Watch. Behold Nabopolassar is about to attack thy enemies. Some think that Nahum addresses Ninive ironically. C. — Nabuchodonosor wasted all the environs, and then took the city (W.) after his other conquests. C. — But his father is here denoted. H.

2_2 Συντετέλεσται, ἐξῇρται· ἀνέβη ἐμφυσῶν εἰς πρόσωπόν σου, ἐξαιρούμενος ἐκ θλίψεως· σκόπευσον ὁδὸν, κράτησον ὀσφύος, ἄνδρισαι τῇ ἰσχύϊ σφόδρα.
2_2 עָלָ֥ה מֵפִ֛יץ עַל פָּנַ֖יִ/ךְ נָצ֣וֹר מְצֻרָ֑ה צַפֵּה דֶ֨רֶךְ֙ חַזֵּ֣ק מָתְנַ֔יִם אַמֵּ֥ץ כֹּ֖חַ מְאֹֽד
2:2 Quia reddidit Dominus superbiam Jacob, sicut superbiam Israel ; quia vastatores dissipaverunt eos, et propagines eorum corruperunt.
*H For the Lord hath rendered the pride of Jacob, as the pride of Israel: because the spoilers have laid them waste, and have marred their vine branches.


Ver. 2. Pride, &c. He hath punished Jacob for his pride; and therefore Ninive must not expect to escape. Or else, rendering the pride of Jacob means rewarding, that is, punishing Ninive for the pride they exercised against Jacob. Ch. — After the Assyrians had seized the ten tribes, they became more insolent, and are therefore punished. W. — The haughty Phul, &c. had invaded the Israelites, and had taken them into captivity. This God will now resent, (C.) though he justly chastised his people by them. H.

2_3 Διότι ἀπέστρεψε Κύριος τὴν ὕβριν Ἰακὼβ, καθὼς ὕβριν τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ, διότι ἐκτινάσσοντες ἐξετίναξαν αὐτοὺς, καὶ τὰ κλήματα αὐτῶν διέφθειραν.
2_3 כִּ֣י שָׁ֤ב יְהוָה֙ אֶת גְּא֣וֹן יַעֲקֹ֔ב כִּ/גְא֖וֹן יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כִּ֤י בְקָקוּ/ם֙ בֹּֽקְקִ֔ים וּ/זְמֹרֵי/הֶ֖ם שִׁחֵֽתוּ
2:3 Clypeus fortium ejus ignitus, viri exercitus in coccineis ; igneae habenae currus in die praeparationis ejus, et agitatores consopiti sunt.
*H The shield of his mighty men is like fire, the men of the army are clad in scarlet, the reins of the chariot are flaming in the day of his preparation, and the drivers are stupefied.


Ver. 3. Mighty men. He speaks of the Chaldeans and Medes sent to destroy the Ninivites. Ch. — This is the common opinion. Yet it seems rather that the Ninivites are designated, as they were asleep and stumbled, &c. C. — Stupified. That is, they drive on furiously, like men intoxicated with wine. Ch. — Heb. "the fir-tree shall be shaken," or poisoned. Ps. cxix. 4. Sept. read better, (C.) "their horsemen shall be in a hurry, or in confusion." H. — The armour was kept very shining, and the soldiers of Cyrus were clothed in purple, like himself. Xen. iii. — Yet this availed nothing, while the men were asleep or confounded. C.

2_4 Ὅπλα δυναστείας αὐτῶν ἐξ ἀνθρώπων, ἄνδρας δυνατοὺς ἐμπαίζοντας ἐν πυρί· αἱ ἡνίαι τῶν ἁρμάτων αὐτῶν ἐν ἡμέρᾳ ἑτοιμασίας αὐτοῦ, καὶ οἱ ἱππεῖς θορυβηθήσονται
2_4 מָגֵ֨ן גִּבֹּרֵ֜י/הוּ מְאָדָּ֗ם אַנְשֵׁי חַ֨יִל֙ מְתֻלָּעִ֔ים בְּ/אֵשׁ פְּלָד֥וֹת הָ/רֶ֖כֶב בְּ/י֣וֹם הֲכִינ֑/וֹ וְ/הַ/בְּרֹשִׁ֖ים הָרְעָֽלוּ
2:4 In itineribus conturbati sunt ; quadrigae collisae sunt in plateis : aspectus eorum quasi lampades, quasi fulgura discurrentia.
*H They are in confusion in the ways, the chariots jostle one against another in the streets: their looks are like torches, like lightning running to and fro.

2_5 ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς, καὶ συγχυθήσονται τὰ ἅρματα, καὶ συμπλακήσονται ἐν ταῖς πλατείαις· ἡ ὅρασις αὐτῶν ὡς λαμπάδες πυρὸς, καὶ ὡς ἀστραπαὶ διατρέχουσαι.
2_5 בַּֽ/חוּצוֹת֙ יִתְהוֹלְל֣וּ הָ/רֶ֔כֶב יִֽשְׁתַּקְשְׁק֖וּ/ן בָּ/רְחֹב֑וֹת מַרְאֵי/הֶן֙ כַּ/לַּפִּידִ֔ם כַּ/בְּרָקִ֖ים יְרוֹצֵֽצוּ
2:5 Recordabitur fortium suorum ; ruent in itineribus suis : velociter ascendent muros ejus, et praeparabitur umbraculum.
*H He will muster up his valiant men, they shall stumble in their march: they shall quickly get upon the walls thereof: and a covering shall be prepared.


Ver. 5. Muster. Lit. " remember" (H.) the ancient heroes, Salmanasar, &c. C. — Stumble, by running hastily on. Ch. — Prepared to defend the city. H. — All this represents a city surprised. It attempts to defend itself; but God renders all efforts vain. C.

2_6 Καὶ μνησθήσονται οἱ μεγιστᾶνες αὐτῶν, καὶ φεύξονται ἡμέρας, καὶ ἀσθενήσουσιν ἐν τῇ πορείᾳ αὐτῶν, καὶ σπεύσουσιν ἐπὶ τὰ τείχη αὐτῆς, καὶ ἑτοιμάσουσι τὰς προφυλακὰς αὐτῶν.
2_6 יִזְכֹּר֙ אַדִּירָ֔י/ו יִכָּשְׁל֖וּ ב/הלכות/ם בַּ/הֲלִֽיכָתָ֑/ם יְמַֽהֲרוּ֙ חֽוֹמָתָ֔/הּ וְ/הֻכַ֖ן הַ/סֹּכֵֽךְ
2:6 Portae fluviorum apertae sunt, et templum ad solum dirutum.
*H The gates of the rivers are opened, and the temple is thrown down to the ground.

2_7 Πύλαι τῶν πόλεων διηνοίχθησαν, καὶ τὰ βασίλεια διέπεσε,
2_7 שַׁעֲרֵ֥י הַ/נְּהָר֖וֹת נִפְתָּ֑חוּ וְ/הַֽ/הֵיכָ֖ל נָמֽוֹג
2:7 Et miles captivus abductus est, et ancillae ejus minabantur gementes ut columbae, murmurantes in cordibus suis.
*H And the soldier is led away captive: and her bondwomen were led away mourning as doves, murmuring in their hearts.


Ver. 7. Soldier. Heb. hutsab, (H.) "the station" or guard; the queen, or the statue of the idol, with the women (C.) who prostituted themselves in its honour. Sanct. xxxi. — Ninive and its dependances are taken. Grot.

2_8 καὶ ἡ ὑπόστασις ἀπεκαλύφθη· καὶ αὕτη ἀνέβαινε, καὶ αἱ δοῦλαι αὐτῆς ἤγοντο, καθὼς περιστεραὶ φθεγγόμεναι ἐν καρδίαις αὐτῶν.
2_8 וְ/הֻצַּ֖ב גֻּלְּתָ֣ה הֹֽעֲלָ֑תָה וְ/אַמְהֹתֶ֗י/הָ מְנַֽהֲגוֹת֙ כְּ/ק֣וֹל יוֹנִ֔ים מְתֹפְפֹ֖ת עַל לִבְבֵ/הֶֽן
2:8 Et Ninive quasi piscina aquarum aquae ejus ; ipsi vero fugerunt. State, state ! et non est qui revertatur.
*H And as for Ninive, her waters are like a great pool: but the men flee away. They cry: Stand, stand, but there is none that will return back.


Ver. 8. Waters: multitudes, (Apoc. xvii. 15.) and riches; (C.) or the flood bursting upon them makes them flee. H. — The citizens run away when the enemy had made a breach, as water does when the dam is broken down; and though some more valiant will exhort them to tarry, they will not succeed, nor save the city. W.

2_9 Καὶ Νινευὴ ὡς κολυμβήθρα ὕδατος τὰ ὕδατα αὐτῆς, καὶ αὐτοὶ φεύγοντες οὐκ ἔστησαν, καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ ἐπιβλέπων.
2_9 וְ/נִינְוֵ֥ה כִ/בְרֵֽכַת מַ֖יִם מִ֣/ימֵי הִ֑יא וְ/הֵ֣מָּה נָסִ֔ים עִמְד֥וּ עֲמֹ֖דוּ וְ/אֵ֥ין מַפְנֶֽה
2:9 Diripite argentum, diripite aurum : et non est finis divitiarum ex omnibus vasis desiderabilibus.
Take ye the spoil of the silver, take the spoil of the gold: for there is no end of the riches of all the precious furniture.
2_10 Διήρπαζον τὸ ἀργύριον, διήρπαζον τὸ χρυσίον, καὶ οὐκ ἦν πέρας τοῦ κόσμου αὐτῆς· βεβάρυνται ἐπὶ πάντα τὰ σκεὺη τὰ ἐπιθυμητὰ αὐτῆς.
2_10 בֹּ֥זּוּ כֶ֖סֶף בֹּ֣זּוּ זָהָ֑ב וְ/אֵ֥ין קֵ֨צֶה֙ לַ/תְּכוּנָ֔ה כָּבֹ֕ד מִ/כֹּ֖ל כְּלִ֥י חֶמְדָּֽה
2:10 Dissipata est, et scissa, et dilacerata ; et cor tabescens, et dissolutio geniculorum, et defectio in cunctis renibus, et facies omnium eorum sicut nigredo ollae.
*H She is destroyed, and rent, and torn: the heart melteth, and the knees fail, and all the loins lose their strength: and the faces of them all are as the blackness of a kettle.

2_11 Ἐκτιναγμὸς, καὶ ἀνατιναγμὸς, καὶ ἐκβρασμὸς, καὶ καρδίας θραυσμὸς, καὶ ὑπόλυσις γονάτων, καὶ ὠδίνες ἐπὶ πᾶσαν ὀσφύν· καὶ τὸ πρόσωπον πάντων ὡς πρόσκαυμα χύτρας.

2:11 Ubi est habitaculum leonum, et pascua catulorum leonum, ad quam ivit leo ut ingrederetur illuc catulus leonis, et non est qui exterreat ?
*H Where is now the dwelling of the lions, and the feeding place of the young lions, to which the lion went, to enter in thither, the young lion, and there was none to make them afraid?


Ver. 11. Lions. The kings of Assyria had plundered various nations, (H.) and had brought the spoils to Ninive. But all shall be lost. W. — These princes followed no law but their own will. — The lion, Nabopolassar, or his son: though it seems rather to relate to the Assyrian monarchs. C.

2_12 Ποῦ ἐστι τὸ κατοικητήριον τῶν λεόντων, καὶ ἡ νομὴ ἡ οὖσα τοῖς σκύμνοις; ποῦ ἐπορεύθη λέων, τοῦ εἰσελθεῖν ἐκεῖ σκύμνον λέοντος, καὶ οὐκ ἦν ὁ ἐκφοβῶν;
2_12 אַיֵּה֙ מְע֣וֹן אֲרָי֔וֹת וּ/מִרְעֶ֥ה ה֖וּא לַ/כְּפִרִ֑ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָלַךְ֩ אַרְיֵ֨ה לָבִ֥יא שָׁ֛ם גּ֥וּר אַרְיֵ֖ה וְ/אֵ֥ין מַחֲרִֽיד
2:12 Leo cepit sufficienter catulis suis, et necavit leaenis suis, et implevit praeda speluncas suas, et cubile suum rapina.
The lion caught enough for his whelps, and killed for his lionesses: and he filled his holes with prey, and his den with rapine.
2_13 Λέων ἥρπασε τὰ ἱκανὰ τοῖς σκύμνοις αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἀπέπνιξε τοῖς λέουσιν αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔπλησε θήρας νοσσιὰν αὐτοῦ, καὶ τὸ κατοικητήριον αὐτοῦ ἁρπαγῆς.

2:13 Ecce ego ad te, dicit Dominus exercituum, et succendam usque ad fumum quadrigas tuas, et leunculos tuos comedet gladius, et exterminabo de terra praedam tuam, et non audietur ultra vox nuntiorum tuorum.]
