And Josaphat king of Juda returned to his house in peace to Jerusalem.
Καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν Ἰωσαφὰτ βασιλεὺς Ἰούδα εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ εἰς Ἱερουσαλήμ.
וַ֠/יָּשָׁב יְהוֹשָׁפָ֨ט מֶֽלֶךְ יְהוּדָ֧ה אֶל בֵּית֛/וֹ בְּ/שָׁל֖וֹם לִֽ/ירוּשָׁלִָֽם
19:2 Cui occurrit Jehu filius Henani videns, et ait ad eum : Impio praebes auxilium, et his qui oderunt Dominum amicitia jungeris, et idcirco iram quidem Domini merebaris :
*H And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer met him, and said to him: Thou helpest the ungodly, and thou art joined in friendship with them that hate the Lord, and therefore thou didst deserve indeed the wrath of the Lord:


Ver. 2. Thou. Sept. "O king Josaphat, if thou helpest the sinner; or, wilt thou befriend one hated by the Lord?" Prot. "shouldst thou....love them that hate the Lord?" H. — The Donatists hence inferred, that it was not lawful to converse with sinners. But S. Aug. (c. ep. Par. ii. 18.) replied, that Josaphat was blamed for aiding Achab in the contempt of the true prophet, and for going to battle conformably to the predictions of impostors. Both kings offended, but in a different degree. W. — We must also keep at as great a distance as possible from the notorious enemies of God, as their conversation is dangerous. T. — Evil communications corrupt the best of manners. See Ps. cxxxviii. &c.

Καὶ ἐξῆλθεν εἰς ἀπάντησιν αὐτοῦ Ἰηοὺ ὁ τοῦ Ἀνανὶ ὁ προφήτης, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, βασιλεὺς Ἰωσαφὰτ, εἰ ἁμαρτωλῷ σὺ βοηθεῖς, ἢ μισουμένῳ ὑπὸ Κυρίου φιλιάζεις; διὰ τοῦτο ἐγένετο ἐπὶ σὲ ὀργὴ παρὰ Κυρίου.
וַ/יֵּצֵ֣א אֶל פָּנָ֗י/ו יֵה֣וּא בֶן חֲנָ֘נִי֮ הַ/חֹזֶה֒ וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל הַ/מֶּ֣לֶךְ יְהוֹשָׁפָ֔ט הֲ/לָ/רָשָׁ֣ע לַ/עְזֹ֔ר וּ/לְ/שֹׂנְאֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה תֶּאֱהָ֑ב וּ/בָ/זֹאת֙ עָלֶ֣י/ךָ קֶּ֔צֶף מִ/לִּ/פְנֵ֖י יְהוָֽה
19:3 sed bona opera inventa sunt in te, eo quod abstuleris lucos de terra Juda, et praeparaveris cor tuum ut requireres Dominum Deum patrum tuorum.
*H But good works are found in thee, because thou hast taken away the groves out of the land of Juda, and hast prepared thy heart to seek the Lord the God of thy fathers.


Ver. 3. Works. Sept. "words." Prot. "things." H. — The merit of Josaphat screened him from punishment. T. — Prepared. Sept. "directed." M. — Syr. "disposed." Faith teaches that we can do no good of ourselves, but that we have free will to choose either good or evil.

Ὅτι ἀλλʼ ἢ λόγοι ἀγαθοὶ ηὑρέθησαν ἐν σοὶ, ὅτι ἐξῇρας τὰ ἄλση ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς Ἰούδα, καὶ κατηύθυνας τὴν καρδίαν σου ἐκζητῆσαι τὸν Κύριον.
אֲבָ֕ל דְּבָרִ֥ים טוֹבִ֖ים נִמְצְא֣וּ עִמָּ֑/ךְ כִּֽי בִעַ֤רְתָּ הָ/אֲשֵׁרוֹת֙ מִן הָ/אָ֔רֶץ וַ/הֲכִינ֥וֹתָ לְבָבְ/ךָ֖ לִ/דְרֹ֥שׁ הָֽ/אֱלֹהִֽים
19:4 Habitavit ergo Josaphat in Jerusalem, rursumque egressus est ad populum de Bersabee usque ad montem Ephraim, et revocavit eos ad Dominum Deum patrum suorum.
*H And Josaphat dwelt at Jerusalem: and he went out again to the people from Bersabee to mount Ephraim, and brought them back to the Lord the God of their fathers.


Ver. 4. Ephraim. This was the northern boundary, as Dan or Emath had been under David and Solomon. C.

Καὶ κατῴκησεν Ἰωσαφὰτ εἰς Ἱερουσαλήμ· καὶ πάλιν ἐξῆλθεν εἰς τὸν λαὸν ἀπὸ Βηρσαβεὲ ἕως ὄρους Ἐφραὶμ, καὶ ἐπέστρεψεν αὐτοὺς ἐπὶ Κύριον Θεὸν τῶν πάτερων αὐτῶν.
וַ/יֵּ֥שֶׁב יְהוֹשָׁפָ֖ט בִּ/ירוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וַ/יָּ֜שָׁב וַ/יֵּצֵ֣א בָ/עָ֗ם מִ/בְּאֵ֥ר שֶׁ֨בַע֙ עַד הַ֣ר אֶפְרַ֔יִם וַ/יְשִׁיבֵ֕/ם אֶל יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י אֲבוֹתֵי/הֶֽם
19:5 Constituitque judices terrae in cunctis civitatibus Juda munitis per singula loca,
And he set judges of the land in all the fenced cities of Juda, in every place.
Καὶ κατέστησε τοὺς κριτὰς ἐν πάσαις ταῖς πόλεσιν Ἰούδα ταῖς ὀχυραῖς, ἐν πόλει καὶ πόλει.
וַ/יַּעֲמֵ֨ד שֹֽׁפְטִ֜ים בָּ/אָ֗רֶץ בְּ/כָל עָרֵ֧י יְהוּדָ֛ה הַ/בְּצֻר֖וֹת לְ/עִ֥יר וָ/עִֽיר
19:6 et praecipiens judicibus : Videte, ait, quid faciatis : non enim hominis exercetis judicium, sed Domini : et quodcumque judicaveritis, in vos redundabit.
*H And charging the judges, he said: Take heed what you do: for you exercise not the judgment of man, but of the Lord: and whatsoever you judge, it shall redound to you.


Ver. 6. And whatsoever. Heb. "who is with you in the judgment." The Lord will confirm your just decisions, and punish your injustice. H. — God stood in the synagogue of gods, or judges. Ps. lxxxi. 1. Judges ought not so much to regard man as God, when they pass sentence. C. — How then will the Anabaptists deny that a man may sit in judgment? T.

Καὶ εἶπε τοῖς κριταῖς, ἴδετε τί ὑμεῖς ποιεῖτε, ὅτι οὐκ ἀνθρώπῳ ὑμεῖς κρίνετε, ἀλλʼ ἢ τῷ Κυρίῳ, καὶ μεθʼ ὑμῶν λόγοι τῆς κρίσεως.
וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל הַ/שֹּֽׁפְטִ֗ים רְאוּ֙ מָֽה אַתֶּ֣ם עֹשִׂ֔ים כִּ֣י לֹ֧א לְ/אָדָ֛ם תִּשְׁפְּט֖וּ כִּ֣י לַ/יהוָ֑ה וְ/עִמָּ/כֶ֖ם בִּ/דְבַ֥ר מִשְׁפָּֽט
19:7 Sit timor Domini vobiscum, et cum diligentia cuncta facite : non est enim apud Dominum Deum nostrum iniquitas, nec personarum acceptio, nec cupido munerum.

Ver. 7. Gifts. The contrary is the source of so much corruption. H. — It would be proper to inscribe this sentence on the walls of all courts of judicature, or rather on the hearts of all in office. T. — None but the true religion can produce such maxims. C.

Καὶ νῦν γενέσθω φόβος Κυρίου ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς, καὶ φυλάσσετε καὶ ποιήσατε, ὅτι οὐκ ἔστι μετὰ Κυρίου Θεοῦ ἡμῶν ἀδικία, οὐδὲ θαυμάσαι πρόσωπον, οὐδὲ λαβεῖν δῶρα.
וְ/עַתָּ֕ה יְהִ֥י פַֽחַד יְהוָ֖ה עֲלֵי/כֶ֑ם שִׁמְר֣וּ וַ/עֲשׂ֔וּ כִּֽי אֵ֞ין עִם יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֗י/נוּ עַוְלָ֛ה וּ/מַשֹּׂ֥א פָנִ֖ים וּ/מִקַּח שֹֽׁחַד
19:8 In Jerusalem quoque constituit Josaphat Levitas, et sacerdotes, et principes familiarum ex Israel, ut judicium et causam Domini judicarent habitatoribus ejus.
*H In Jerusalem also Josaphat appointed Levites, and priests and chiefs of the families of Israel, to judge the judgment and the cause of the Lord for the inhabitants thereof.


Ver. 8. And the. Heb. "of the Lord, and for disputes among the people among themselves, (H.) and they returned, (v. 4) or dwelt at Jerusalem." C. — Sept. "to judge the inhabitants of," &c. Josephus (ix. 1.) says, "he returned." Syr. "And being returned....he exhorted."

Καί γε ἐν Ἱερουσαλὴμ κατέστησεν Ἰωσαφὰτ τῶν ἱερέων καὶ τῶν Λευιτῶν καὶ τῶν πατριαρχῶν Ἰσραὴλ εἰς κρίσιν Κυρίου, καὶ κρίνειν τοὺς κατοικοῦντας ἐν Ἱερουσαλήμ.
וְ/גַ֣ם בִּ֠/ירוּשָׁלִַם הֶעֱמִ֨יד יְהוֹשָׁפָ֜ט מִן הַ/לְוִיִּ֣ם וְ/הַ/כֹּהֲנִ֗ים וּ/מֵ/רָאשֵׁ֤י הָ/אָבוֹת֙ לְ/יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לְ/מִשְׁפַּ֥ט יְהוָ֖ה וְ/לָ/רִ֑יב וַ/יָּשֻׁ֖בוּ יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם
19:9 Praecepitque eis, dicens : Sic agetis in timore Domini fideliter et corde perfecto.
And he charged them, saying, Thus shall you do in the fear of the Lord faithfully, and with a perfect heart.
Καὶ ἐνετείλατο πρὸς αὐτοὺς, λέγων, οὕτω ποιήσετε ἐν φόβῳ Κυρίου, ἐν ἀληθείᾳ, καὶ ἐν πλήρει καρδίᾳ·
וַ/יְצַ֥ו עֲלֵי/הֶ֖ם לֵ/אמֹ֑ר כֹּ֤ה תַעֲשׂוּ/ן֙ בְּ/יִרְאַ֣ת יְהוָ֔ה בֶּ/אֱמוּנָ֖ה וּ/בְ/לֵבָ֥ב שָׁלֵֽם
19:10 Omnem causam quae venerit ad vos fratrum vestrorum, qui habitant in urbibus suis inter cognationem et cognationem, ubicumque quaestio est de lege, de mandato, de caeremoniis, de justificationibus : ostendite eis, ut non peccent in Dominum, et ne veniat ira super vos et super fratres vestros : sic ergo agentes non peccabitis.
*H Every cause that shall come to you of your brethren, that dwell in their cities, between kindred and kindred, wheresoever there is question concerning the law, the commandment, the ceremonies, the justifications: shew it them, that they may not sin against the Lord, and that wrath may not come upon you and your brethren: and so doing you shall not sin.


Ver. 10. Cities. He addressed the judges of the capital, to whom appeals might be made. C. M. — Kindred, with respect to inheritances and matrimonial cases. Heb. "blood," or murder, whether casual or wilful.

Πᾶς ἀνὴρ κρίσιν τὴν ἐλθοῦσαν ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς τῶν ἀδελφῶν ὑμῶν τῶν κατοικούντων ἐν ταῖς πόλεσιν αὐτῶν ἀναμέσον αἷμα αἵματος, καὶ ἀναμέσον τοῦ προστάγματος καὶ ἐντολῆς, καὶ δικαιώματα καὶ κρίματα, καὶ διαστελεῖσθε αὐτοῖς, καὶ οὐχ ἁμαρτήσονται τῷ κυρίῳ, καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ὀργὴ ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς, καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς ὑμῶν· οὕτως ποιήσετε, καὶ οὐχ ἁμαρτήσεσθε.
וְ/כָל רִיב֩ אֲשֶׁר יָב֨וֹא עֲלֵי/כֶ֜ם מֵ/אֲחֵי/כֶ֣ם הַ/יֹּשְׁבִ֣ים בְּ/עָרֵי/הֶ֗ם בֵּֽין דָּ֣ם לְ/דָם֮ בֵּין תּוֹרָ֣ה לְ/מִצְוָה֮ לְ/חֻקִּ֣ים וּ/לְ/מִשְׁפָּטִים֒ וְ/הִזְהַרְתֶּ֣ם אֹתָ֔/ם וְ/לֹ֤א יֶאְשְׁמוּ֙ לַ/יהוָ֔ה וְ/הָֽיָה קֶ֥צֶף עֲלֵי/כֶ֖ם וְ/עַל אֲחֵי/כֶ֑ם כֹּ֥ה תַעֲשׂ֖וּ/ן וְ/לֹ֥א תֶאְשָֽׁמוּ
19:11 Amarias autem sacerdos et pontifex vester in his quae ad Deum pertinent, praesidebit : porro Zabadias filius Ismahel, qui est dux in domo Juda, super ea opera erit quae ad regis officium pertinent : habetisque magistros Levitas coram vobis. Confortamini, et agite diligenter, et erit Dominus vobiscum in bonis.
*H And Amarias the priest your high priest shall be chief in the things which regard God: and Zabadias the son of Ismahel, who is ruler in the house of Juda, shall be over those matters which belong to the king's office: and you have before you the Levites for masters, take courage and do diligently, and the Lord will be with you in good things.


Ver. 11. Amarias, (1 Par. vi. 11.) or rather Azarias, the father of Johanan. ib. v. 9. — Office, in civil matters. C. — Here is a plain distinction between the spiritual and temporal authority, instituted by God. Deut. xvii. Num. xxvii. W. T. — Masters. Heb. shoterim, to execute the sentence; (D.) or "officers." — You. Prot. "with the good." H.

Καὶ ἰδοὺ Ἀμαρίας ὁ ἱερεὺς ἡγούμενος ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς εἰς πάντα λόγον Κυρίου, καὶ Ζαβδίας υἱὸς Ἰσμαὴλ ὁ ἡγούμενος εἰς οἶκον Ἰούδα πρὸς πάντα λόγον βασιλέως, καὶ οἱ γραμματεῖς καὶ οἱ Λευῖται πρὸ προσώπου ὑμῶν· ἰσχύσατε καὶ ποιήσατε, καὶ ἔσται Κύριος μετὰ τοῦ ἀγαθοῦ.
