And the days of David drew nigh that he should die, and he charged his son Solomon, saying:

Ver. 3. Charge, what he orders. — Understand. Heb. "act prudently," (M.) or "with success," Gr. interp. (C.) and Chal. M. — The observance of God's law, both in private and in public, will ensure to thee the title of a wise prince.

καὶ φυλάξεις φυλακὴν Κυρίου Θεοῦ σου τοῦ πορεύεσθαι ἐν ταῖς ὁδοῖς αὐτοῦ, φυλάσσειν τὰς ἐντολὰς αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ δικαιώματα καὶ τὰ κρίματα τὰ γεγραμμένα ἐν τῷ νόμῳ Μωυσέως· ἵνα συνήσῃς ἃ ποιήσεις κατὰ πάντα ὅσα ἂν ἐντείλωμαί σοι·

2:4 ut confirmet Dominus sermones suos quos locutus est de me, dicens : Si custodierint filii tui vias suas, et ambulaverint coram me in veritate, in omni corde suo et in omni anima sua, non auferetur tibi vir de solio Israel.
*H That the Lord may confirm his words, which he hath spoken of me, saying: If thy children shall take heed to their ways, and shall walk before me in truth, with all their heart, and with all their soul, there shall not be taken away from thee a man on the throne of Israel.


Ver. 4. Truth and sincerity. C. — This promise was made, 2 K. vii. 16. M.

Ἵνα στήσῃ Κύριος τὸν λόγον αὐτοῦ ὃν ἐλάλησε, λέγων, ἐὰν φυλάξωσιν οἱ υἱοί σου τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτῶν πορεύεσθαι ἐνώπιόν μου ἐν ἀληθείᾳ, ἐν ὅλῃ καρδίᾳ αὐτῶν, λέγων, οὐκ ἐξολοθρευθήσεταί σοι ἀνὴρ ἐπάνωθεν θρόνου Ἰσραήλ.

Ver. 5. Joab. These instructions given by David to his son, with relation to Joab and Semei, proceeded not from any rancour of heart, or private pique; but from a zeal for justice: that crimes so public and heinous might not pass unpunished. Ch. — David and Solomon esteemed themselves, in a manner, defiled, as long as these continued unpunished, v. 31. Joab had behaved to David with great insolence, after the death of Absalom. H. — He had lately sided with Adonias. M. — But what touched the good old king more particularly, were the treacherous murders of two great generals, who had put themselves under his protection, and were endeavouring to promote his welfare. Only the fear of greater commotions had hitherto prevented David from bringing his nephew to public execution, as the people expected. He deemed it requisite to remind his successor of this obligation, when his power should be sufficiently strong, that the impunity of such daring offenders might not destroy the commonwealth. H. — Peace. Pretending affection. Joab had treated Abner and Amasa as the worst of enemies, and their blood had stained his garments. M.

2:6 Facies ergo juxta sapientiam tuam, et non deduces canitiem ejus pacifice ad inferos.
*H Do, therefore, according to thy wisdom, and let not his hoary head go down to hell in peace.


Ver. 6. To hell. This word hell doth not signify the place or state of damnation; but the place and state of the dead. Ch. — It would have been a great scandal if this murderer had died quietly in his old age. Joab had rendered great services to his uncle, for which he had been rewarded. He had been at the head of the armies 40 years. His great age rendered him now less formidable; particularly as the nation enjoyed peace.

Καὶ ποιήσεις κατὰ τὴν σοφίαν σου, καὶ σὺ κατάξεις τὴν πολιὰν αὐτοῦ ἐν εἰρήνῃ εἰς ᾅδου.

2:7 Sed et filiis Berzellai Galaaditis reddes gratiam, eruntque comedentes in mensa tua : occurrerunt enim mihi quando fugiebam a facie Absalom fratris tui.

Ver. 8. Curse. Saying, Go out, &c. 2 K. xvi. 5. — Camp. Heb. Machanayim. H. — Sword. He would revenge his private wrongs, but reserved the punishment of a notorious offender, till a time when passion would have no influence. Solomon was not bound by the personal oath of his father.

2_9 Καὶ οὐ μὴ ἀθωώσῃς αὐτὸν, ὅτι ἀνὴρ σοφὸς εἶ σύ, καὶ γνώσῃ ἃ ποιήσεις αὐτῷ, καὶ κατάξεις τὴν πολιὰν αὐτοῦ ἐν αἵματι εἰς ᾅδου.
וְ/הִנֵּ֣ה עִ֠מְּ/ךָ שִֽׁמְעִ֨י בֶן גֵּרָ֥א בֶן הַ/יְמִינִי֮ מִ/בַּחֻרִים֒ וְ/ה֤וּא קִֽלְלַ֨/נִי֙ קְלָלָ֣ה נִמְרֶ֔צֶת בְּ/י֖וֹם לֶכְתִּ֣/י מַחֲנָ֑יִם וְ/הֽוּא יָרַ֤ד לִ/קְרָאתִ/י֙ הַ/יַּרְדֵּ֔ן וָ/אֶשָּׁ֨בַֽע ל֤/וֹ בַֽ/יהוָה֙ לֵ/אמֹ֔ר אִם אֲמִֽיתְ/ךָ֖ בֶּ/חָֽרֶב
2:9 tu noli pati eum esse innoxium. Vir autem sapiens es, ut scias quae facies ei : deducesque canos ejus cum sanguine ad inferos.
*H Do not thou hold him guiltless. But thou art a wise man, and knowest what to do with him, and thou shalt bring down his grey hairs with blood to the grave.


Ver. 9. Man. Many have thought that Solomon was only 12 years old. Euseb. &c. — But the best chronologers suppose that he was about 20. God had blessed him with a happy disposition, which he adorned with various graces. C. iii. 12. Wisd. viii. 19.

2:10 Dormivit igitur David cum patribus suis, et sepultus est in civitate David.

Ver. 10. David. Thus died this perfect model of princes, and this great saint, whose only fault, of consequence, was occasioned by Bethsabee: (2 K. xi. 4.) and this served to display his repentance. S. Chrys. hom. lxxvii. — He prefigured Jesus Christ in a wonderful manner; in his birth, at the same city; his election, in preference to his brethren; his persecutions, and subsequent glory. Jesus was, in like manner, betrayed by a false friend, and obliged to go out of Jerusalem, laden with his cross. But he acquired fresh splendour by his sufferings, and purchased a more faithful people. The tomb of David remained for many ages. Acts ii. 29. Josephus says that it contained vast riches: but this seems to be fabulous. S. Jerom often went to pray at this tomb. Ep. ad Marcel. — If it be now unknown, the Holy Ghost has left us a more illustrious monument to the honour of this great man, in the Psalms, and Eccli. xlvii. 2. &c. C. — We have now only an abridgment of his history. 1 Par. xxix. 29.

Καὶ ἐκοιμήθη Δαυὶδ μετὰ τῶν πατέρων αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐτάφη ἐν πόλει Δαυίδ.

And Adonias, the son of Haggith, came to Bethsabee the mother of Solomon. And she said to him: Is thy coming peaceable? He answered: It is peaceable.
Καὶ εἰσῆλθεν Ἀδωνίας υἱὸς Ἀγγὶθ πρὸς Βηρσαβεὲ μητέρα Σαλωμὼν, καὶ προσεκύνησεν αὐτῇ· ἡ δὲ εἶπεν, εἰρήνη ἡ εἴσοδός σου; καὶ εἶπεν, εἰρήνη·

2:14 Addiditque : Sermo mihi est ad te. Cui ait : Loquere. Et ille :
And he added: I have a word to speak with thee. She said to him: Speak. And he said:
λόγος μοι πρὸς σέ. Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, λάλησον.

2:15 Tu, inquit, nosti, quia meum erat regnum, et me praeposuerat omnis Israel sibi in regem : sed translatum est regnum, et factum est fratris mei : a Domino enim constitutum est ei.
*H Thou knowest that the kingdom was mine, and all Israel had preferred me to be their king: but the kingdom is transferred, and is become my brother's: for it was appointed him by the Lord.


Ver. 15. Mine, according to the ordinary course of things. But I was willing to forego my claims, when I perceived that the Lord had made choice of my brother. C.

Καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῇ, σὺ οἶδας, ὅτι ἐμοὶ ἦν βασιλεία, καὶ ἐπʼ ἐμὲ ἔθετο πᾶς Ἰσραὴλ τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ εἰς βασιλέα· καὶ ἐστράφη ἡ βασιλεία, καὶ ἐγένετο τῷ ἀδελφῷ μου, ὅτι παρὰ Κυρίου ἐγενήθη αὐτῷ.

2:16 Nunc ergo petitionem unam precor a te : ne confundas faciem meam. Quae dixit ad eum : Loquere.
Now therefore, I ask one petition of thee; turn not away my face. And she said to him: Say on.
Καὶ νῦν αἴτησιν μίαν ἐγὼ αἰτοῦμαι παρὰ σοῦ, μὴ ἀποστρέψῃς τὸ πρόσωπόν σου· καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ Βηρσαβεὲ, λάλει.
וְ/עַתָּ֗ה שְׁאֵלָ֤ה אַחַת֙ אָֽנֹכִי֙ שֹׁאֵ֣ל מֵֽ/אִתָּ֔/ךְ אַל תָּשִׁ֖בִי אֶת פָּנָ֑/י וַ/תֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלָ֖י/ו דַּבֵּֽר
2:17 Et ille ait : Precor ut dicas Salomoni regi (neque enim negare tibi quidquam potest) ut det mihi Abisag Sunamitidem uxorem.

Ver. 17. Wife. Some think that Joab had instigated Adonias to make this petition, that his party might be strengthened. Theod. q. 7. But love might be his prompter. C. — Bethsabee consented to further his petition, (M.) without suspecting any bad consequences. H.

Whether the Mother of God Should Be Worshipped with the Adoration of _Latria_?

Objection 1: It would seem that the Mother of God is to be worshiped with the adoration of _latria._ For it seems that the same honor is due to the king's mother as to the king: whence it is written (3 Kings 2:19) that "a throne was set for the king's mother, and she sat on His right hand." Moreover, Augustine [*Sermon on the Assumption, work of an anonymous author] says: "It is right that the throne of God, the resting-place of the Lord of Heaven, the abode of Christ, should be there where He is Himself." But Christ is worshiped with the adoration of _latria._ Therefore His Mother also should be.

Obj. 2: Further, Damascene says (De Fide Orth. iv, 16): "The honor of the Mother reflects on the Son." But the Son is worshiped with the adoration of _latria._ Therefore the Mother also.

Obj. 3: Further, Christ's Mother is more akin to Him than the cross. But the cross is worshiped with the adoration of _latria._ Therefore also His Mother is to be worshiped with the same adoration.

_On the contrary,_ The Mother of God is a mere creature. Therefore the worship of _latria_ is not due to her.

_I answer that,_ Since _latria_ is due to God alone, it is not due to a creature so far as we venerate a creature for its own sake. For though insensible creatures are not capable of being venerated for their own sake, yet the rational creature is capable of being venerated for its own sake. Consequently the worship of _latria_ is not due to any mere rational creature for its own sake. Since, therefore, the Blessed Virgin is a mere rational creature, the worship of _latria_ is not due to her, but only that of _dulia_: but in a higher degree than to other creatures, inasmuch as she is the Mother of God. For this reason we say that not any kind of _dulia_ is due to her, but _hyperdulia._

Reply Obj. 1: The honor due to the king's mother is not equal to the honor which is due to the king: but is somewhat like it, by reason of a certain excellence on her part. This is what is meant by the authorities quoted.

Reply Obj. 2: The honor given to the Mother reflects on her Son, because the Mother is to be honored for her Son's sake. But not in the same way as honor given to an image reflects on its exemplar: because the image itself, considered as a thing, is not to be venerated in any way at all.

Reply Obj. 3: The cross, considered in itself, is not an object of veneration, as stated above (AA. 4, 5). But the Blessed Virgin is in herself an object of veneration. Hence there is no comparison. _______________________

Ver. 22. The kingdom. It was a maxim in most of the oriental courts, that the things which had belonged to the king, should not be enjoyed by any but his successor. Grotius. — Hence Adonias might be suspected of ambitious projects, as his party was still formidable. C. — The marriage seems also to be unlawful. M. See C. i. 4. — Yet, if the aforesaid custom subsisted at that time; or, if the marriage had been evidently prohibited, both Adonias and Bethsabee must have acted in a very inconsistent manner, so that we must hesitate before we pronounce sentence. H. — Many condemn Solomon of precipitation and cruelty in his judgment; (Cajet.) while others approve of his conduct, (Theod. q. 7,) and think any delay might have proved dangerous. Salien. — But now, Solomon orders Abiathar to retire to his estate, in punishment of his conspiracy. C. — He might have justly put him to death, if he had committed a crime worthy of it; as his dignity did not give him a right to disturb the peace of the state with impunity. H. — Solomon acted as a prophet. W. — God had long before denounced that the family of Eleazar should regain the dignity, which Heli had obtained by some means or other. 1 K. ii. 31. H. — Solomon only put the divine decree in execution. Pineda vi. 15. — Sadoc had perhaps also passed sentence, as the Levitical tribe had a great sway in the courts of judicature. M. — Abiathar was still honoured with his former title. C. iv. 4. But he was not permitted to officiate, (C.) nor to remain in the royal city, as he seemed now to be a dangerous man. H. — Anathoth was a sacerdotal town in Benjamin. M. — A portion of the suburbs had been assigned to Abiathar, unless he had obtained a field by inheritance, or by marrying an heiress. 2:31 Dixitque ei rex : Fac sicut locutus est, et interfice eum, et sepeli : et amovebis sanguinem innocentem qui effusus est a Joab, a me, et a domo patris mei.
And the king said to him: Do as he hath said; and kill him, and bury him, and thou shalt remove the innocent blood which hath been shed by Joab, from me, and from the house of my father:

And their blood shall return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever. But to David and his seed, and his house, and to his throne, be peace for ever from the Lord.

2:34 Ascendit itaque Banaias filius Jojadae, et aggressus eum interfecit : sepultusque est in domo sua in deserto.
*H So Banaias, the son of Joiada, went up, and setting upon him slew him, and he was buried in his house in the desert.


Ver. 34. Slew him, holding the altar; though some think that he was removed by force, like Athalia, 4 K. xi. 15. Both actions were contrary to the reverence due to so holy a place, and perhaps inexcusable; (C.) unless the law had ordered it otherwise. Ex. xxi. 14. H.

Καὶ ἀνέβη Βαναίας υἱὸς Ἰωδαὲ, καὶ ἀπήντησεν αὐτῷ, καὶ ἐθανάτωσεν αὐτὸν, καὶ ἔθαψεν αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ αὐτοῦ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ.

2:35 Et constituit rex Banaiam filium Jojadae pro eo super exercitum, et Sadoc sacerdotem posuit pro Abiathar.
*H And the king appointed Banaias, the son of Joiada in his room over the army; and Sadoc, the priest, he put in the place of Abiathar.

The king also sent, and called for Semei, and said to him: Build thee a house in Jerusalem, and dwell there: and go not out from thence any where.
Καὶ ἐκάλεσεν ὁ βασιλεὺς τὸν Σεμεῒ, καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, ὠκοδόμησον σεαυτῷ οἶκον ἐν Ἱερουσαλὴμ καὶ κάθου ἐκεῖ, καὶ οὐκ ἐξελεύσῃ ἐκεῖθεν οὐδαμοῦ.

2:37 Quacumque autem die egressus fueris, et transieris torrentem Cedron, scito te interficiendum : sanguis tuus erit super caput tuum.
*H For on what day soever thou shalt go out, and shalt pass over the brook Cedron, know that thou shalt be put to death: thy blood shall be upon thy own head.


Ver. 37. Cedron, which led towards Bahurim. He was equally forbidden to go out by any other road; and was put to death for going to Geth. — Head. Thou canst blame only thyself. Solomon might have put this man to death before: but he chose to pay so much deference to the oath of his father, as not to bring him to execution without a fresh offence.

Καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῆς ἐξόδου σου καὶ διαβήσῃ τὸν χείμαῤῥον Κέδρων, γινώσκων γνώσῃ ὅτι θανάτῳ ἀποθανῇ· τὸ αἷμά σου ἔσται ἐπὶ τὴν κεφαλήν σου· καὶ ὥρκισεν αὐτὸν ὁ βασιλεὺς ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ.

2:38 Dixitque Semei regi : Bonus sermo : sicut locutus est dominus meus rex, sic faciet servus tuus. Habitavit itaque Semei in Jerusalem diebus multis.
And Semei said to the king: The saying is good: as my lord the king hath said, so will thy servant do. And Semei dwelt in Jerusalem many days.

2:39 Factum est autem post annos tres ut fugerent servi Semei ad Achis filium Maacha regem Geth : nuntiatumque est Semei quod servi ejus issent in Geth.
*H And it came to pass after three years, that the servants of Semei ran away to Achis, the son of Maacha, the king of Geth: and it was told Semei that his servants were gone to Geth.

And Semei arose, and saddled his ass, and went to Achis, to Geth, to seek his servants, and he brought them out of Geth.

2:41 Nuntiatum est autem Salomoni quod isset Semei in Geth de Jerusalem, et rediisset.
And it was told Solomon, that Semei had gone from Jerusalem to Geth, and was come back.
Καὶ ἀπηγγέλη τῷ Σαλωμὼν, λέγοντες, ὅτι ἐπορεύθη Σεμεῒ ἐξ Ἱερουσαλὴμ εἰς Γὲθ, καὶ ἀνέστρεψε τοὺς δούλους αὐτοῦ.

2:42 Et mittens vocavit eum, dixitque illi : Nonne testificatus sum tibi per Dominum, et praedixi tibi : Quacumque die egressus ieris huc et illuc, scito te esse moriturum : et respondisti mihi : Bonus sermo, quem audivi ?
And sending he called for him, and said to him: Did I not protest to thee by the Lord, and tell thee before: On what day soever thou shalt go out and walk abroad any where, know that thou shalt die? And thou answeredst me: The word that I have heard is good.
Καὶ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ βασιλεὺς καὶ ἐκάλεσε τὸν Σεμεῒ, καὶ εἶπε πρὸς αὐτόν, οὐχὶ ὥρκισά σε κατὰ τοῦ Κυρίου, καὶ ἐπεμαρτυράμην σοι, λέγων, ἐν ᾗ ἂν ἡμέρᾳ ἐξέλθῃς ἐξ Ἱερουσαλὴμ, καὶ πορευθῇς εἰς δεξιὰ ἢ εἰς ἀριστερά, γινώσκων γνώσῃ ὅτι θανάτῳ ἀποθανῇ;
וַ/יִּשְׁלַ֨ח הַ/מֶּ֜לֶךְ וַ/יִּקְרָ֣א לְ/שִׁמְעִ֗י וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜י/ו הֲ/ל֧וֹא הִשְׁבַּעְתִּ֣י/ךָ בַֽ/יהוָ֗ה וָ/אָעִ֤ד בְּ/ךָ֙ לֵ/אמֹ֔ר בְּ/י֣וֹם צֵאתְ/ךָ֗ וְ/הָֽלַכְתָּ֙ אָ֣נֶה וָ/אָ֔נָה יָדֹ֥עַ תֵּדַ֖ע כִּ֣י מ֣וֹת תָּמ֑וּת וַ/תֹּ֧אמֶר אֵלַ֛/י ט֥וֹב הַ/דָּבָ֖ר שָׁמָֽעְתִּי
2:43 quare ergo non custodisti jusjurandum Domini, et praeceptum quod praeceperam tibi ?
Why then hast thou not kept the oath of the Lord, and the commandment that I laid upon thee?
Καὶ τί ὅτι οὐκ ἐφύλαξας τὸν ὅρκον Κυρίου, καὶ τὴν ἐντολὴν ἣν ἐνετειλάμην κατὰ σοῦ;
וּ/מַדּ֕וּעַ לֹ֣א שָׁמַ֔רְתָּ אֵ֖ת שְׁבֻעַ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה וְ/אֶת הַ/מִּצְוָ֖ה אֲשֶׁר צִוִּ֥יתִי עָלֶֽי/ךָ
2:44 Dixitque rex ad Semei : Tu nosti omne malum cujus tibi conscium est cor tuum, quod fecisti David patri meo : reddidit Dominus malitiam tuam in caput tuum :
And the king said to Semei: Thou knowest all the evil, of which thy heart is conscious, which thou didst to David, my father: the Lord hath returned thy wickedness upon thy own head.
Καὶ εἶπεν ὁ βασιλεὺς πρὸς Σεμεῒ, σὺ οἶδας πᾶσαν τὴν κακίαν σου ἣν οἶδεν ἡ καρδία σου, ἃ ἐποίησας Δαυὶδ τῷ πατρί μου, καὶ ἀνταπέδωκε Κύριος τὴν κακίαν σου εἰς κεφαλήν σου.
וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר הַ/מֶּ֜לֶךְ אֶל שִׁמְעִ֗י אַתָּ֤ה יָדַ֨עְתָּ֙ אֵ֣ת כָּל הָ/רָעָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר יָדַע֙ לְבָ֣בְ/ךָ֔ אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתָ לְ/דָוִ֣ד אָבִ֑/י וְ/הֵשִׁ֧יב יְהוָ֛ה אֶת רָעָתְ/ךָ֖ בְּ/רֹאשֶֽׁ/ךָ
2:45 et rex Salomon benedictus, et thronus David erit stabilis coram Domino usque in sempiternum.
And king Solomon shall be blessed, and the throne of David shall be established before the Lord for ever.
Καὶ ὁ βασιλεὺς Σαλωμὼν εὐλογημένος, καὶ ὁ θρόνος Δαυὶδ ἔσται ἕτοιμος ἐνώπιον Κυρίου εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα.
וְ/הַ/מֶּ֥לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה בָּר֑וּךְ וְ/כִסֵּ֣א דָוִ֗ד יִהְיֶ֥ה נָכ֛וֹן לִ/פְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה עַד עוֹלָֽם
2:46 Jussit itaque rex Banaiae filio Jojadae, qui egressus, percussit eum, et mortuus est.
So the king commanded Banaias, the son of Joiada: and he went out and struck him; and he died.
Καὶ ἐνετείλατο ὁ βασιλεὺς Σαλωμὼν τῷ Βαναίᾳ υἱῷ Ἰωδαὲ, καὶ ἐξῆλθε καὶ ἀνεῖλεν αὐτόν.
