22:1 Onus vallis Visionis. [Quidnam quoque tibi est, quia ascendisti et tu omnis in tecta ?
*H The burden of the valley of vision. What aileth thee also, that thou too art wholly gone up to the housetops?
Ver. 1. The valley of vision: Jerusalem. The temple of Jerusalem was built upon Mount Moria, or the mountain of vision. But the city is here called, the valley of vision, either because it was lower than the temple, or because of the low condition to which it was to be reduced, (Ch.) during the captivity. W. — Vision. Sept. "Sion." H. — This prophecy regards the devastation caused by Sennacherib, (S. Jer.) Nabuchodonosor, (Sanct.) the Romans, (Eus.) or by Assaradon, when he took Manasses. 2 Par. xxxiii. 11. and 4 K. xxi. 10. — Tops, to weep.
Τί ἐγένετό σοι, ὅτι νῦν ἀνέβητε πάντες εἰς δώματα μάταια;
מַשָּׂ֖א גֵּ֣יא חִזָּי֑וֹן מַה לָּ֣/ךְ אֵפ֔וֹא כִּֽי עָלִ֥ית כֻּלָּ֖/ךְ לַ/גַּגּֽוֹת
22:2 Clamoris plena, urbs frequens, civitas exsultans ; interfecti tui, non interfecti gladio, nec mortui in bello.
*H Full of clamour, a populous city, a joyous city: thy slain are not slain by the sword, nor dead in battle.
Ver. 2. Battle. He taxes the king with cowardice.
Ἐνεπλήσθη ἡ πόλις βοώντων, οἱ τραυματίαι σου οὐ τραυματίαι ἐν μαχαίραις, οὐδὲ οἱ νεκροί σου νεκροὶ πολέμων.
תְּשֻׁא֣וֹת מְלֵאָ֗ה עִ֚יר הֽוֹמִיָּ֔ה קִרְיָ֖ה עַלִּיזָ֑ה חֲלָלַ֨יִ/ךְ֙ לֹ֣א חַלְלֵי חֶ֔רֶב וְ/לֹ֖א מֵתֵ֥י מִלְחָמָֽה
22:3 Cuncti principes tui fugerunt simul dureque ligati sunt ; omnes qui inventi sunt vincti sunt pariter ; procul fugerunt.
All the princes are fled together, and are bound hard: all that were found, are bound together, they are fled far off.

22:4 Propterea dixi : Recedite a me : amare flebo ; nolite incumbere ut consolemini me super vastitate filiae populi mei ;
*H Therefore have I said: Depart from me, I will weep bitterly: labour not to comfort me, for the devastation of the daughter of my people.
Ver. 4. People. He saw this in spirit, though he might not live to witness it. C.
Διὰ τοῦτο εἶπα, ἄφετέ με, πικρῶς κλαύσομαι· μὴ κατισχύσητε παρακαλεῖν με ἐπὶ τὸ σύντριμμα τῆς θυγατρὸς τοῦ γένους μου,

22:5 dies enim interfectionis, et conculcationis, et fletuum, Domino Deo exercituum, in valle Visionis, scrutans murum, et magnificus super montem.
*H For it is a day of slaughter and of treading down, and of weeping to the Lord the God of hosts in the valley of vision, searching the wall, and magnificent upon the mountain.
Ver. 5. Searching. That day beheld the Assyrians (H.) undermining the wall, and behaving with haughtiness (C.) on Mount Sion. H.
ὅτι ἡμέρα ταραχῆς καὶ ἀπωλείας καὶ καταπατήματος, καὶ πλάνησις παρὰ Κυρίου σαβαώθ· ἐν φάραγγι Σιὼν πλανῶνται, ἀπὸ μικροῦ ἕως μεγάλου πλανῶνται ἐπὶ τὰ ὄρη.

22:6 Et Aelam sumpsit pharetram, currum hominis equitis, et parietem nudavit clypeus.
*H And Elam took the quiver, the chariot of the horseman, and the shield was taken down from the wall.

Οἱ δὲ Ἐλαμεῖται ἔλαβον φαρέτρας, καὶ ἀναβάται ἄνθρωποι ἐφʼ ἵππους, καὶ συναγωγὴ παρατάξεως.

And thy choice valleys shall be full of chariots, and the horsemen shall place themselves in the gate.

22:8 Et revelabitur operimentum Judae, et videbis in die illa armamentarium domus saltus.
*H And the covering of Juda shall be discovered, and thou shalt see in that day the armoury of the house of the forest.
Ver. 8. Covering. Heb. masac, (H.) "shade," for the convenience of the people. 4 K. xvi. 18. — Forest, built by Solomon. Ezechias has also procured store of arms, which were now delivered out to the citizens.
καὶ ἀνακαλύψουσι τὰς πύλας Ἰούδα· καὶ ἐμβλέψονται τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ εἰς τοὺς ἐκλεκτοὺς οἴκους τῆς πόλεως·

Καὶ ἀνακαλύψουσι τὰ κρυπτὰ τῶν οἴκων τῆς ἄκρας Δαυείδ· καὶ εἴδοσαν, ὅτι πλείους εἰσί, καὶ ὅτι ἀπέστρεψε τὸ ὕδωρ τῆς ἀρχαίας κολυμβήθρας εἰς τὴν πόλιν,

22:10 et domos Jerusalem numerastis, et destruxistis domos ad muniendum murum.
And have numbered the houses of Jerusalem, and broken down houses to fortify the wall.
καὶ ὅτι καθείλοσαν τοὺς οἴκους Ἱερουσαλὴμ εἰς ὀχυρώματα τείχους τῇ πόλει.

This same Ezechias was, he that stopped the upper source of the waters of Gihon, and turned them away underneath toward the west of the city of David: in all his works he did prosperously what he would.
*H And you made a ditch between the two walls for the water of the old pool: and you have not looked up to the maker thereof, nor regarded him even at a distance, that wrought it long ago.
Ver. 11. Walls. Manasses enclosed the pool within walls, forming a second town. 4 K. xxii. 29. — Ago. You have not imitated the piety of Ezechias.

Ver. 14. Die. The repentance of Manasses, and the piety of Josias, could not avert the storm. Discite justitiam moniti et non temnere divos.

Ver. 17. Cock. S. Jerom's master assured him that the word which is usually rendered a warrior, has this meaning. H. — The comparison agrees well with a proud man reduced to misery. C. — Heb. "With the captivity of a man, and he will cover thee." Sept. "he will cast out and bruise the man, and will take away thy comely robe, and throw thee into," &c. H.

*H He will crown thee with a crown of tribulation, he will toss thee like a ball into a large and spacious country: there shalt thou die, and there shall the chariot of thy glory be, the shame of the house of thy Lord.

22:19 Et expellam te de statione tua, et de ministerio tuo deponam te.
And I will drive thee out from thy station, and depose thee from thy ministry.
Καὶ ἀφαιρεθήσῃ ἐκ τῆς οἰκονομίας σου καὶ ἐκ τῆς στάσεώς σου.

22:20 Et erit in die illa : vocabo servum meum Eliacim, filium Helciae,
*H And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will call my servant Eliacim the son of Helcias,
Ver. 20. Eliacim, who had been displaced, v. 15. He acted as regent after the departure of Manasses, who always followed his counsels at his return. Judith iv. 5. The priesthood was not then incompatible with civil and military functions.
Καὶ ἔσται ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ καὶ καλέσω τὸν παῖδά μου Ἐλιακεὶμ τὸν τοῦ Χελκίου,
וְ/הָיָ֖ה בַּ/יּ֣וֹם הַ/ה֑וּא וְ/קָרָ֣אתִי לְ/עַבְדִּ֔/י לְ/אֶלְיָקִ֖ים בֶּן חִלְקִיָּֽהוּ
22:21 et induam illum tunica tua, et cingulo tuo confortabo eum, et potestatem tuam dabo in manu ejus ; et erit quasi pater habitantibus Jerusalem et domui Juda.
*H And I will clothe him with thy robe, and will strengthen him with thy girdle, and will give thy power into his hand: and he shall be as a father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and to the house of Juda.

22:23 Et figam illum paxillum in loco fideli, et erit in solium gloriae domui patris ejus.
*H And I will fasten him as a peg in a sure place, and he shall be for a throne of glory to the house of his father.

*H And they shall hang upon him all the glory of his father's house, divers kinds of vessels, every little vessel, from the vessels of cups even to every instrument of music.
Ver. 24. House. He shall be the ornament of the priesthood. — Music. All affairs in church and state shall be at his disposal.
Καὶ ἔσται πεποιθὼς ἐπʼ αὐτὸν πᾶς ἔνδοξος ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ πατρὸς αὐτοῦ, ἀπὸ μικροῦ ἕως μεγάλου, καὶ ἔσονται ἐπικρεμάμενοι αὐτῷ
וְ/תָל֨וּ עָלָ֜י/ו כֹּ֣ל כְּב֣וֹד בֵּית אָבִ֗י/ו הַ/צֶּֽאֱצָאִים֙ וְ/הַ/צְּפִע֔וֹת כֹּ֖ל כְּלֵ֣י הַ/קָּטָ֑ן מִ/כְּלֵי֙ הָֽ/אַגָּנ֔וֹת וְ/עַ֖ד כָּל כְּלֵ֥י הַ/נְּבָלִֽים
22:25 In die illa, dicit Dominus exercituum, auferetur paxillus qui fixus fuerat in loco fideli, et frangetur, et cadet, et peribit quod pependerat in eo, quia Dominus locutus est.]
*H In that day, saith the Lord of hosts, shall the peg be removed, that was fastened in the sure place: and it shall be broken and shall fall: and that which hung thereon, shall perish, because the Lord hath spoken it.

τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ· τάδε λέγει Κύριος σαβαὼθ, κινηθήσεται ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ ἐστηριγμένος ἐν τόπῳ πιστῷ, καὶ ἀφαιρεθήσεται, καὶ πεσεῖται, καὶ ἐξολεθρευθήσεται ἡ δόξα ἡ ἐπʼ αὐτόν, ὅτι Κύριος ἐλάλησεν.
