And Jacob lifting up his eyes, saw Esau coming, and with him four hundred men: and he divided the children of Lia and of Rachel, and of the two handmaids.

33:2 et posuit utramque ancillam, et liberos earum, in principio : Liam vero, et filios ejus, in secundo loco : Rachel autem et Joseph novissimos.
And he put both the handmaids and their children foremost: and Lia and her children in the second place: and Rachel and Joseph last.
Καὶ ἔθετο τὰς δύο παιδίσκας καὶ τοὺς υἱοὺς αὐτῶν ἐν πρώτοις, καὶ Λείαν καὶ τὰ παιδία αὐτῆς ὀπίσω, καὶ Ῥαχὴλ καὶ Ἰωσὴφ ἐσχάτους.
וַ/יָּ֧שֶׂם אֶת הַ/שְּׁפָח֛וֹת וְ/אֶת יַלְדֵי/הֶ֖ן רִֽאשֹׁנָ֑ה וְ/אֶת לֵאָ֤ה וִֽ/ילָדֶ֨י/הָ֙ אַחֲרֹנִ֔ים וְ/אֶת רָחֵ֥ל וְ/אֶת יוֹסֵ֖ף אַחֲרֹנִֽים
33:3 Et ipse progrediens adoravit pronus in terram septies, donec appropinquaret frater ejus.
*H And he went forward and bowed down with his face to the ground seven times, until his brother came near.


Ver. 3. Forward, before his family; like a good father, exposing himself to the greatest danger. M. — Seven times, to testify his great humility and respect for his brother. How, then, can any one find fault with Catholics, if they bow down before the cross thrice on Good Friday, to testify their great veneration for their expiring Lord?

Αὐτὸς δὲ προῆλθεν ἔμπροσθεν αὐτῶν· καὶ προσεκύνησεν ἐπὶ τὴν γῆν ἑπτάκις, ἕως τοῦ ἐγγίσαι τῷ ἀδελφῷ αὐτοῦ.
וְ/ה֖וּא עָבַ֣ר לִ/פְנֵי/הֶ֑ם וַ/יִּשְׁתַּ֤חוּ אַ֨רְצָ/ה֙ שֶׁ֣בַע פְּעָמִ֔ים עַד גִּשְׁתּ֖/וֹ עַד אָחִֽי/ו
33:4 Currens itaque Esau obviam fratri suo, amplexatus est eum : stringensque collum ejus, et osculans flevit.
Then Esau ran to meet his brother, and embraced him: and clasping him fast about the neck, and kissing him, wept.
Καὶ προσέδραμεν Ἡσαῦ εἰς συνάντησιν αὐτῷ· καὶ περιλαβὼν αὐτὸν προσέπεσεν ἐπὶ τὸν τράχηλον αὐτοῦ, καὶ κατεφίλησεν αὐτόν· καὶ ἔκλαυσαν ἀμφότεροι.
וַ/יָּ֨רָץ עֵשָׂ֤ו לִ/קְרָאת/וֹ֙ וַֽ/יְחַבְּקֵ֔/הוּ וַ/יִּפֹּ֥ל עַל צַוָּארָ֖/ו וַׄ/יִּׄשָּׁׄקֵ֑ׄ/הׄוּׄ וַ/יִּבְכּֽוּ
33:5 Levatisque oculis, vidit mulieres et parvulos earum, et ait : Quid sibi volunt isti ? et si ad te pertinent ? Respondit : Parvuli sunt quos donavit mihi Deus servo tuo.
And lifting up his eyes, he saw the women and their children, and said: What mean these? And do they belong to thee? He answered: They are the children which God hath given to me, thy servant.
Καὶ ἀναβλέψας Ἡσαῦ εἶδε τὰς γυναῖκας καὶ τὰ παιδία· καὶ εἶπε, τί ταῦτά σοι ἐστίν; ὁ δὲ εἶπε, τὰ παιδία, οἷς ἠλέησεν ὁ Θεὸς τὸν παῖδά σου.

33:6 Et appropinquantes ancillae et filii earum, incurvati sunt.
Then the handmaids and their children came near and bowed themselves.
Καὶ προσήγγισαν αἱ παιδίσκαι καὶ τὰ τέκνα αὐτῶν, καὶ προσεκύνησαν.
וַ/תִּגַּ֧שְׁןָ הַ/שְּׁפָח֛וֹת הֵ֥נָּה וְ/יַלְדֵי/הֶ֖ן וַ/תִּֽשְׁתַּחֲוֶֽיןָ
33:7 Accessit quoque Lia cum pueris suis : et cum similiter adorassent, extremi Joseph et Rachel adoraverunt.
Lia also, with her children, came near and bowed down in like manner; and last of all, Joseph and Rachel bowed down.
Καὶ προσήγγισε Λεία καὶ τὰ τέκνα αὐτῆς, καὶ προσεκύνησαν· καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα προσήγγισε Ῥαχὴλ καὶ Ἰωσὴφ, καὶ προσεκύνησαν.

33:8 Dixitque Esau : Quaenam sunt istae turmae quas obviam habui ? Respondit : Ut invenirem gratiam coram domino meo.
*H And Esau said: What are the droves that I met? He answered: That I might find favour before my lord.


Ver. 8. Favour. Esau had already heard from the servants. But he asks again, meaning to excuse himself from receiving them. H. — This civil and unexpected behaviour, filled the breast of Jacob with such gratitude and love, that he made use of an hyperbole, I have seen, &c....of God. Chal. "of a prince," Syr. "of an angel," Elohim. See 2 K. xix. 27. Est. xv. 16. C. — A little present. Heb. monée, or mincha, calculated to shew the subjection of the giver. M.

Καὶ εἶπε, τί ταῦτά σοι ἐστὶν, πᾶσαι αἱ παρεμβολαὶ αὗται, αἷς ἀπήντηκα; ὁ δὲ εἶπεν, ἵνα εὕρῃ ὁ παῖς σου χάριν ἐναντίον σου, κύριε.

33:9 At ille ait : Habeo plurima, frater mi, sint tua tibi.
But he said: I have plenty, my brother, keep what is thine for thyself.
Εἶπε δὲ Ἡσαῦ, ἔστι μοι πολλὰ, ἀδελφέ· ἔστω σοι τὰ σά.

33:10 Dixitque Jacob : Noli ita, obsecro : sed si inveni gratiam in oculis tuis, accipe munusculum de manibus meis. Sic enim vidi faciem tuam, quasi viderim vultum Dei : esto mihi propitius,
And Jacob said: Do not so I beseech thee, but if I have found favour in thy eyes, receive a little present at my hands: for I have seen thy face, as if I should have seen the countenance of God: be gracious to me,
Εἶπε δὲ Ἰακὼβ, εἰ εὓρον χάριν ἐναντίον σου, δέξαι τὰ δῶρα διὰ τῶν ἐμῶν χειρῶν· ἕνεκεν τούτου εἶδον τὸ πρόσωπόν σου, ὡς ἄν τις ἴδοι πρόσωπον Θεοῦ, καὶ εὐδοκήσεις με.
וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר יַעֲקֹ֗ב אַל נָא֙ אִם נָ֨א מָצָ֤אתִי חֵן֙ בְּ/עֵינֶ֔י/ךָ וְ/לָקַחְתָּ֥ מִנְחָתִ֖/י מִ/יָּדִ֑/י כִּ֣י עַל כֵּ֞ן רָאִ֣יתִי פָנֶ֗י/ךָ כִּ/רְאֹ֛ת פְּנֵ֥י אֱלֹהִ֖ים וַ/תִּרְצֵֽ/נִי
33:11 et suscipe benedictionem quam attuli tibi, et quam donavit mihi Deus tribuens omnia. Vix fratre compellente, suscipiens,
And take the blessing which I have brought thee, and which God hath given me, who giveth all things. He took it with much ado at his brother's earnest pressing him,
Λάβε τὰς εὐλογίας μου, ἃς ἤνεγκά σοι, ὅτι ἠλέησέ με ὁ Θεὸς, καὶ ἔστι μοι πάντα· καὶ ἐβιάσατο αὐτὸν, καὶ ἔλαβε.
קַח נָ֤א אֶת בִּרְכָתִ/י֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֻבָ֣את לָ֔/ךְ כִּֽי חַנַּ֥/נִי אֱלֹהִ֖ים וְ/כִ֣י יֶשׁ לִ/י כֹ֑ל וַ/יִּפְצַר בּ֖/וֹ וַ/יִּקָּֽח
33:12 ait : Gradiamur simul, eroque socius itineris tui.
And said: Let us go on together, and I will accompany thee in thy journey.
Καὶ εἶπεν, ἀπάραντες πορευσώμεθα ἐπʼ εὐθεῖαν.
וַ/יֹּ֖אמֶר נִסְעָ֣ה וְ/נֵלֵ֑כָה וְ/אֵלְכָ֖ה לְ/נֶגְדֶּֽ/ךָ
33:13 Dixitque Jacob : Nosti, domine mi, quod parvulos habeam teneros, et oves, et boves foetas mecum : quas si plus in ambulando fecero laborare, morientur una die cuncti greges.
*H And Jacob said: My lord, thou knowest that I have with me tender children, and sheep, and kine with young: which if I should cause to be overdriven, in one day all the flocks will die.

Εἶπε δὲ αὐτῷ, ὁ κύριός μου γινώσκει, ὅτι τὰ παιδία ἁπαλώτερα, καὶ τὰ πρόβατα καὶ αἱ βόες λοχεύονται ἐπʼ ἐμέ· ἐὰν οὖν καταδιώξω αὐτὰ ἡμέραν μίαν, ἀποθανοῦνται πάντα τὰ κτήνη.

33:14 Praecedat dominus meus ante servum suum : et ego sequar paulatim vestigia ejus, sicut videro parvulos meos posse, donec veniam ad dominum meum in Seir.
*H May it please my lord to go before his servant: and I will follow softly after him, as I shall see my children to be able, until I come to my lord in Seir.


Ver. 14. In Seir; not immediately, but as soon as it might be convenient. This time perhaps never arrived. S. Aug. q. 106.

Προελθέτω ὁ κύριός μου ἔμπροσθεν τοῦ παιδὸς αὐτοῦ· ἐγὼ δὲ ἐνισχύσω ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ κατὰ σχολὴν τῆς πορεύσεως τῆς ἐναντίον μου, καὶ κατὰ πόδα τῶν παιδαρίων, ἕως τοῦ ἐλθεῖν με πρὸς τὸν κύριόν μου εἰς Σηείρ.
יַעֲבָר נָ֥א אֲדֹנִ֖/י לִ/פְנֵ֣י עַבְדּ֑/וֹ וַ/אֲנִ֞י אֶֽתְנָהֲלָ֣ה לְ/אִטִּ֗/י לְ/רֶ֨גֶל הַ/מְּלָאכָ֤ה אֲשֶׁר לְ/פָנַ/י֙ וּ/לְ/רֶ֣גֶל הַ/יְלָדִ֔ים עַ֛ד אֲשֶׁר אָבֹ֥א אֶל אֲדֹנִ֖/י שֵׂעִֽירָ/ה
33:15 Respondit Esau : Oro te, ut de populo qui mecum est, saltem socii remaneant viae tuae. Non est, inquit, necesse : hoc uno tantum indigeo, ut inveniam gratiam in conspectu tuo, domine mi.
Esau answered: I beseech thee, that some of the people, at least, who are with me, may stay to accompany thee in the way. And he said: There is no necessity: I want nothing else but only to find favour, my lord, in thy sight.
Εἶπε δὲ Ἡσαῦ, καταλείψω μετὰ σοῦ ἀπὸ τοῦ λαοῦ τοῦ μετʼ ἐμοῦ· ὁ δὲ εἶπεν, ἱνατί τοῦτο; ἱκανὸν ὅτι εὗρον χάριν ἐναντίον σου, κύριε.
וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר עֵשָׂ֔ו אַצִּֽיגָה נָּ֣א עִמְּ/ךָ֔ מִן הָ/עָ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתִּ֑/י וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לָ֣/מָּה זֶּ֔ה אֶמְצָא חֵ֖ן בְּ/עֵינֵ֥י אֲדֹנִֽ/י
33:16 Reversus est itaque illo die Esau itinere quo venerat in Seir.
So Esau returned that day, the way that he came, to Seir.
Ἀπέστρεψε δὲ Ἡσαῦ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ εἰς τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτοῦ εἰς Σηείρ.
וַ/יָּשָׁב֩ בַּ/יּ֨וֹם הַ/ה֥וּא עֵשָׂ֛ו לְ/דַרְכּ֖/וֹ שֵׂעִֽירָ/ה
33:17 Et Jacob venit in Socoth : ubi aedificata domo et fixis tentoriis appellavit nomen loci illius Socoth, id est, Tabernacula.
And Jacob came to Socoth: where having built a house, and pitched tents, he called the name of the place Socoth, that is, Tents.
Καὶ Ἰακὼβ ἀπαίρει εἰς σκηνὰς, καὶ ἐποίησεν ἑαυτῷ ἐκεῖ οἰκίας, καὶ τοῖς κτήνεσιν αὐτοῦ ἐποίησε σκηνάς· διὰ τοῦτο ἐκάλεσε τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ τόπου ἐκείνου, Σκηναί.
וְ/יַעֲקֹב֙ נָסַ֣ע סֻכֹּ֔תָ/ה וַ/יִּ֥בֶן ל֖/וֹ בָּ֑יִת וּ/לְ/מִקְנֵ֨/הוּ֙ עָשָׂ֣ה סֻכֹּ֔ת עַל כֵּ֛ן קָרָ֥א שֵׁם הַ/מָּק֖וֹם סֻכּֽוֹת
33:18 Transivitque in Salem urbem Sichimorum, quae est in terra Chanaan, postquam reversus est de Mesopotamia Syriae : et habitavit juxta oppidum.
*H And he passed over to Salem, a city of the Sichemites, which is in the land of Chanaan, after he returned from Mesopotamia of Syria: and he dwelt by the town.


Ver. 18. The town of Salem, which was the first town of Chanaan that he came near since his return. It was afterwards called Sichem, and Sichar. J. iv. 5. and Naplosa. Salim, mentioned John iii. 23, was probably more to the east. Some translate, "He came quite sound to the city of Sichem;" where, Demetrius says, he dwelt ten years, Eus. præp. ix. 21, having stopped at Socoth six months. C. — This seems very probable, as Dina met with her misfortune a little before he left the country; and as she was six years old when she came from Haran, she would be about 15 when she began to go a visiting, &c. C. xxxiv. 1. H.

Καὶ ἦλθεν Ἰακὼβ εἰς Σαλὴμ, πόλιν Σηκίμων, ἥ ἐστιν ἐν γῇ Χαναὰν, ὅτε ἐπανῆλθεν ἐκ τῆς Μεσοποταμίας Συρίας· καὶ παρενέλαβε κατὰ πρόσωπον τῆς πόλεως.
וַ/יָּבֹא֩ יַעֲקֹ֨ב שָׁלֵ֜ם עִ֣יר שְׁכֶ֗ם אֲשֶׁר֙ בְּ/אֶ֣רֶץ כְּנַ֔עַן בְּ/בֹא֖/וֹ מִ/פַּדַּ֣ן אֲרָ֑ם וַ/יִּ֖חַן אֶת פְּנֵ֥י הָ/עִֽיר
33:19 Emitque partem agri, in qua fixerat tabernacula, a filiis Hemor patris Sichem centum agnis.
*H And he bought that part of the field, in which he pitched his tents, of the children of Hemor, the father of Sichem, for a hundred lambs.


Ver. 19. Lambs. Heb. Kossite, or Kesita, a word which occurs also, Jos. xxvi. 32, and Job xlii. 11; and may signify lambs, or a species of money, marked perhaps with their figure. It may also denote pearls, coral, a vessel, or purse of good money. S. Stephen, Acts vii. 19. mentions the price of money. But he probably speaks of the bargain made by Abraham with Ephron, son of Heth, for which some have substituted Hemor, the son of Sichem. Kista in the Chal. means a vessel or measure; and we learn from Herodotus iii. 130, that the Persians were accustomed to keep their money in this manner. In the Chal. Syr. and Arabic languages, there are words derived from the same root as Kesita, which mean purity, perfection; and thus what Jacob gave was good current money; (C.) or such things as were received among merchants.

Καὶ ἐκτήσατο τὴν μερίδα τοῦ ἀγροῦ, οὗ ἔστησεν ἐκεῖ τὴν σκηνὴν αὐτοῦ, παρὰ Ἐμμὼρ πατρὸς Συχὲμ, ἑκατὸν ἀμνῶν.
וַ/יִּ֜קֶן אֶת חֶלְקַ֣ת הַ/שָּׂדֶ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר נָֽטָה שָׁם֙ אָהֳל֔/וֹ מִ/יַּ֥ד בְּנֵֽי חֲמ֖וֹר אֲבִ֣י שְׁכֶ֑ם בְּ/מֵאָ֖ה קְשִׂיטָֽה
33:20 Et erecto ibi altari, invocavit super illud fortissimum Deum Israel.
*H And raising an altar there, he invoked upon it the most mighty God of Israel.


Ver. 20. The most, &c. El Elohe Yisrael. By this name he dignified the altar, consecrating his field and all his possessions to God, and acknowledging that all was his gift. H.

Καὶ ἔστησεν ἐκεῖ θυσιαστήριον, καὶ ἐπεκαλέσατο τὸν Θεὸν Ἰσραήλ.
וַ/יַּצֶּב שָׁ֖ם מִזְבֵּ֑חַ וַ/יִּ֨קְרָא ל֔/וֹ אֵ֖ל אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל
