45:1 Non se poterat ultra cohibere Joseph multis coram astantibus : unde praecepit ut egrederentur cuncti foras, et nullus interesset alienus agnitioni mutuae.
Joseph could no longer refrain himself before many that stood by: whereupon he commanded that all should go out, and no stranger be present at their knowing one another.
Καὶ οὐκ ἠδύνατο Ἰωσὴφ ἀνέχεσθαι πάντων τῶν παρεστηκότων αὐτῷ, ἀλλʼ εἶπεν, ἐξαποστείλατε πάντας ἀπʼ ἐμοῦ· καὶ οὐ παρειστήκει οὐδεὶς τῷ Ἰωσὴφ, ἡνίκα ἀνεγνωρίζετο τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς αὐτοῦ.

45:2 Elevavitque vocem cum fletu, quam audierunt Aegyptii, omnisque domus Pharaonis.
*H And he lifted up his voice with weeping, which the Egyptians, and all the house of Pharao heard.
Ver. 2. Weeping, with a loud cry, being unable to restrain himself. The servants, who were in the adjoining apartments, heard this cry and declaration of Joseph, acknowledging one common father with these men; and they presently conveyed the intelligence to the king. H.
Καὶ ἀφῆκε φωνὴν μετὰ κλαυθμοῦ· ἤκουσαν δὲ πάντες οἱ Αἰγύπτιοι, καὶ ἀκουστὸν ἐγένετο εἰς τὸν οἶκον Φαραώ.
וַ/יִּתֵּ֥ן אֶת קֹל֖/וֹ בִּ/בְכִ֑י וַ/יִּשְׁמְע֣וּ מִצְרַ֔יִם וַ/יִּשְׁמַ֖ע בֵּ֥ית פַּרְעֹֽה
45:3 Et dixit fratribus suis : Ego sum Joseph : adhuc pater meus vivit ? Non poterant respondere fratres nimio terrore perterriti.
And he said to his brethren: I am Joseph: Is my father yet living? His brethren could not answer him, being struck with exceeding great fear.

45:4 Ad quos ille clementer : Accedite, inquit, ad me. Et cum accessissent prope : Ego sum, ait, Joseph, frater vester, quem vendidistis in Aegyptum.

Ver. 4. Nearer; that no one might hear what he was going to say respecting their fault. M. — It is thus we ought to treat those who have injured us. He excuses his brethren as much as possible. H. See C. l. 20.

45:5 Nolite pavere, neque vobis durum esse videatur quod vendidistis me in his regionibus : pro salute enim vestra misit me Deus ante vos in Aegyptum.
*H Be not afraid, and let it not seem to you a hard case that you sold me into these countries: for God sent me before you into Egypt for your preservation.
Ver. 5. Hard. Heb. "Be not indignant in your eyes." Perhaps he was afraid, lest they should begin to accuse one another, as the authors of the deed, and thus disturb the harmony of this reconciliation. He perfectly understands the conduct of divine Providence, which can draw good out of evil, and cause even the malice of men to co-operate in the execution of his designs. C. — God did not sanction or will this malice, as Calvin, &c. impiously assert. T.
Νῦν οὖν μὴ λυπεῖσθε, μηδὲ σκληρὸν ὑμῖν φανήτω, ὅτι ἀπέδοσθέ με ὧδε· εἰς γὰρ ζωὴν ἀπέστειλέ με ὁ Θεὸς ἔμπροσθεν ὑμῶν.

45:6 Biennium est enim quod coepit fames esse in terra : et adhuc quinque anni restant, quibus nec arari poterit, nec meti.
*H For it is two years since the famine began to be upon the land, and five years more remain, wherein there can be neither ploughing nor reaping.
Ver. 6. Reaping, as in common years, though the places near the Nile might produce some little; (M.) and hence the Egyptians ask Joseph for seed. C. xlvii. 19. C.

וַ/יִּשְׁלָחֵ֤/נִי אֱלֹהִים֙ לִ/פְנֵי/כֶ֔ם לָ/שׂ֥וּם לָ/כֶ֛ם שְׁאֵרִ֖ית בָּ/אָ֑רֶץ וּ/לְ/הַחֲי֣וֹת לָ/כֶ֔ם לִ/פְלֵיטָ֖ה גְּדֹלָֽה
45:8 Non vestro consilio, sed Dei voluntate huc missus sum : qui fecit me quasi patrem Pharaonis, et dominum universae domus ejus, ac principem in omni terra Aegypti.
*H Not by your counsel was I sent hither, but by the will of God: who hath made me as it were a father to Pharao, and lord of his whole house, and governor in all the land of Egypt.
Ver. 8. Counsel. Joseph's brethren had no design of elevating him to so high a dignity; but God's will directed Pharao to appoint him his counsellor or prime minister. His father. H. — So the Roman emperors styled the prefects of the Prætorium, and the Caliphs their chief minister. C.

45:9 Festinate, et ascendite ad patrem meum, et dicetis ei : Haec mandat filius tuus Joseph : Deus fecit me dominum universae terrae Aegypti : descende ad me, ne moreris,
Make haste, and go ye up to my father, and say to him: Thus saith thy son Joseph: God hath made me lord of the whole land of Egypt; come down to me, linger not.

45:10 et habitabis in terra Gessen : erisque juxta me tu, et filii tui, et filii filiorum tuorum, oves tuae, et armenta tua, et universa quae possides :
*H And thou shalt dwell in the land of Gessen: and thou shalt be near me, thou and thy sons, and thy sons' sons, thy sheep, and thy herds, and all things that thou hast.
Ver. 10. Gessen, to the north-east of Egypt, near me, at Tanis, in the Delta and near the promised land, being a part of Arabia. H. — Heliopolis, where many suppose Joseph resided, is situated in the same canton, and was one of the chief cities after Ramesse, the capital. C. xlvi. 28. This country is often refreshed by showers of rain, (C.) which never falls in most parts of Egypt. It is intersected by many canals, and is very rich and proper for pasturage. H.

45:11 ibique te pascam (adhuc enim quinque anni residui sunt famis) ne et tu pereas, et domus tua, et omnia quae possides.
*H And there I will feed thee, (for there are yet five years of famine remaining) lest both thou perish, and thy house, and all things that thou hast.

And falling upon the neck of his brother Benjamin, he embraced him and wept: and Benjamin in like manner wept also on his neck.
Καὶ ἐπιπεσὼν ἐπὶ τὸν τράχηλον Βενιαμὶν τοῦ ἀδελφοῦ αὐτοῦ, ἔκλαυσεν ἐπʼ αὐτῷ· καὶ Βενιαμὶν ἔκλαυσεν ἐπὶ τῷ τραχήλῳ αὐτοῦ.

45:15 Osculatusque est Joseph omnes fratres suos, et ploravit super singulos : post quae ausi sunt loqui ad eum.
And Joseph kissed all his brethren, and wept upon every one of them: after which they were emboldened to speak to him.
Καὶ καταφιλήσας πάντας τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ, ἔκλαυσεν ἐπʼ αὐτοῖς· καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἐλάλησαν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ πρὸς αὐτόν.

45:16 Auditumque est, et celebri sermone vulgatum in aula regis : Venerunt fratres Joseph : et gavisus est Pharao, atque omnis familia ejus.
*H And it was heard, and the fame was spread abroad in the king's court: The brethren of Joseph are come; and Pharao with all his family was glad.
Ver. 16. Family, and courtiers. They were all so enraptured with Joseph's conduct, that they rejoiced in whatever gave him pleasure. M. — They thought, perhaps, that his relations would resemble him, and be of service to Egypt. H.
Καὶ διεβοήθη ἡ φωνὴ εἰς τὸν οἶκον Φαραὼ, λέγοντες, ἥκασιν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ Ἰωσήφ· ἐχάρη δὲ Φαραὼ καὶ ἡ θεραπεία αὐτοῦ.

45:17 Dixitque ad Joseph ut imperaret fratribus suis, dicens : Onerantes jumenta, ite in terram Chanaan,
And he spoke to Joseph that he should give orders to his brethren, saying: Load your beasts, and go into the land of Chanaan,
Εἶπε δὲ Φαραὼ πρὸς Ἰωσὴφ, εἰπον τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς σου, τοῦτο ποιήσατε, γεμίσατε τὰ φορεῖα ὑμῶν, καὶ ἀπέλθετε εἰς γῆν Χαναάν.
וַ/יֹּ֤אמֶר פַּרְעֹה֙ אֶל יוֹסֵ֔ף אֱמֹ֥ר אֶל אַחֶ֖י/ךָ זֹ֣את עֲשׂ֑וּ טַֽעֲנוּ֙ אֶת בְּעִ֣ירְ/כֶ֔ם וּ/לְכוּ בֹ֖אוּ אַ֥רְצָ/ה כְּנָֽעַן
45:18 et tollite inde patrem vestrum et cognationem, et venite ad me : et ego dabo vobis omnia bona Aegypti, ut comedatis medullam terrae.
*H And bring away from thence your father and kindred, and come to me; and I will give you all the good things of Egypt, that you may eat the marrow of the land.
Ver. 18. Marrow; which is an emphatical expression, to signify the best things of Egypt. Chal. Heb. "the fat, or the cream of the land." C.
Καὶ ἀναλαβόντες τὸν πατέρα ὑμῶν, καὶ τὰ ὑπάρχοντα ὑμῶν, ἥκετε πρός με· καὶ δώσω ὑμῖν πάντων τῶν ἀγαθῶν Αἰγύπτου, καὶ φάγεσθε τὸν μυελὸν τῆς γῆς.

45:19 Praecipe etiam ut tollant plaustra de terra Aegypti, ad subvectionem parvulorum suorum ac conjugum : et dicito : Tollite patrem vestrum, et properate quantocius venientes.
Give orders also that they take wagons out of the land of Egypt, for the carriage of their children and their wives; and say: Take up your father, and make haste to come with all speed:
Σὺ δὲ ἔντειλαι ταῦτα· λαβεῖν αὐτοῖς ἁμάξας ἐκ γῆς Αἰγύπτου τοῖς παιδίοις ὑμῶν, καὶ ταῖς γυναιξὶν ὑμῶν· καὶ ἀναλαβόντες τὸν πατέρα ὑμῶν παραγίνεσθε.
וְ/אַתָּ֥ה צֻוֵּ֖יתָה זֹ֣את עֲשׂ֑וּ קְחוּ לָ/כֶם֩ מֵ/אֶ֨רֶץ מִצְרַ֜יִם עֲגָל֗וֹת לְ/טַפְּ/כֶם֙ וְ/לִ/נְשֵׁי/כֶ֔ם וּ/נְשָׂאתֶ֥ם אֶת אֲבִי/כֶ֖ם וּ/בָאתֶֽם
45:20 Nec dimittatis quidquam de supellectili vestra : quia omnes opes Aegypti vestrae erunt.
*H And leave nothing of your household stuff; for all the riches of Egypt shall be yours.
Ver. 20. Leave nothing. Heb. may have another meaning, which Calmet approves. "Let not your eye spare your furniture." Be not concerned to leave what may be useless, as most of the husbandry utensils would be in Egypt, "for all," &c.

And the sons of Israel did as they were bid. And Joseph gave them wagons according to Pharao's commandment: and provisions for the way.

45:22 Singulis quoque proferri jussit binas stolas : Benjamin vero dedit trecentos argenteos cum quinque stolis optimis :
*H He ordered also to be brought out for every one of them two robes: but to Benjamin he gave three hundred pieces of silver, with five robes of the best:
Ver. 22. Two robes (stolas) hanging down to the feet. These properly belong to women. But they are worn by men in the East. It was customary to make presents of such robes, as it is still among the great men and kings of that country. Lucullus kept 6000 cloaks in his wardrobe. Horat. 1. sat. 2. C. — Of silver, sicles. The Sept. has "of gold," as also C. xxxvii. 28.
Καὶ πᾶσιν ἔδωκε δισσὰς στολάς· τῷ δὲ Βενιαμὶν ἔδωκε τριακοσίους χρυσοὺς, καὶ πέντε ἐξαλλασσούσας στολάς.

Ver. 23. As much...besides. This is omitted in Heb. or at least is left ambiguous. "He sent in like manner to his father ten," &c. But the Syr. and Sept. explain it like the Vulgate. — She-asses. Sept. "mules." — Bread. Heb. adds, "meat," or provisions. C. — These presents might convince Jacob that Joseph was still alive. H.

45:24 Dimisit ergo fratres suos, et proficiscentibus ait : Ne irascamini in via.
*H So he sent away his brethren, and at their departing said to them: Be not angry in the way.
Ver. 24. Angry. A prudent admonition at all times, but particularly now, to Joseph's brethren; lest reflecting on his excessive kindness, they should each wish to remove from themselves the stigma of cruelty towards him, by throwing it upon others. H. — Heb. may be rendered, "fear not." C.
Ἐξαπέστειλε δὲ τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν· καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, μὴ ὀργίζεσθε ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ.

45:26 Et nuntiaverunt ei, dicentes : Joseph filius tuus vivit : et ipse dominatur in omni terra Aegypti. Quo audito Jacob, quasi de gravi somno evigilans, tamen non credebat eis.
*H And they told him, saying: Joseph, thy son, is living; and he is ruler in all the land of Egypt. Which when Jacob heard, he awaked as it were out of a deep sleep, yet did not believe them.
Ver. 26. He awaked, &c. His heart was overpowered between hope and distrust. He seemed to himself to be dreaming. Sept. "in an ecstacy." Such a sudden transition has oftentimes caused death. H.

45:27 Illi e contra referebant omnem ordinem rei. Cumque vidisset plaustra et universa quae miserat, revixit spiritus ejus,
*H They, on the other side, told the whole order of the thing. And when he saw the wagons, and all that he had sent, his spirit revived,

45:28 et ait : Sufficit mihi si adhuc Joseph filius meus vivit : vadam, et videbo illum antequam moriar.
And he said: It is enough for me if Joseph, my son, be yet living: I will go and see him before I die.
Εἶπε δὲ Ἰσραὴλ, μέγα μοι ἐστὶν, εἰ ἔτι Ἰωσὴφ ὁ υἱός μου ζῇ· πορευθεὶς ὄψομαι αὐτὸν πρὸ τοῦ ἀποθανεῖν με.
