34:2 Haec dicit Dominus Deus Israel : Vade, et loquere ad Sedeciam regem Juda, et dices ad eum : Haec dicit Dominus : Ecce ego tradam civitatem hanc in manus regis Babylonis, et succendet eam igni :
Thus saith the Lord, the God of Israel: Go, and speak to Sedecias king of Juda, and say to him: Thus saith the Lord: Behold I will deliver this city into the hands of the king of Babylon, and he shall burn it with fire.
41_2 Οὕτως εἶπε Κύριος, βάδισον πρὸς Σεδεκίαν βασιλέα Ἰούδα, καὶ ἐρεῖς αὐτῷ, οὕτως εἶπε Κύριος, παραδόσει παραδοθήσεται ἡ πόλις αὕτη εἰς χεῖρας βασιλέως Βαβυλῶνος, καὶ συλλήψεται αὐτὴν, καὶ καύσει αὐτὴν ἐν πυρὶ,

34:3 et tu non effugies de manu ejus, sed comprehensione capieris, et in manu ejus traderis : et oculi tui oculos regis Babylonis videbunt, et os ejus cum ore tuo loquetur, et Babylonem introibis.
*H And thou shalt not escape out of his hand: but thou shalt surely be taken, and thou shalt be delivered into his hand: and thy eyes shall see the eyes of the king of Babylon, and his mouth shall speak with thy mouth, and thou shalt go to Babylon.
Ver. 3. Go to, yet shall not see Babylon, (Ezec. xii. 13.) his eyes being put out. C. xxxii. 4. C. See 4 K. xxv. 7. W. — Paine objects this as a false prophecy, though it was verified so terribly. Daniel, &c. would not neglect to bury the king. Watson.
41_3 καὶ σὺ οὐ μὴ σωθῇς ἐκ χειρὸς αὐτοῦ, καὶ συλλήψει συλληφθήσῃ, καὶ εἰς χεῖρας αὐτοῦ δοθήσῃ, καὶ ὀφθαλμοί σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ ὄψονται, καὶ εἰς Βαβυλῶνα εἰσελεύσῃ.

34:4 Attamen audi verbum Domini, Sedecia, rex Juda : Haec dicit Dominus ad te : Non morieris in gladio,
Yet hear the word of the Lord, O Sedecias king of Juda: Thus saith the Lord to thee: Thou shalt not die by the sword.
41_4 Ἀλλʼ ἄκουσον τὸν λόγον Κυρίου, Σεδεκία βασιλεῦ Ἰούδα· οὕτως λέγει Κύριος,
אַ֚ךְ שְׁמַ֣ע דְּבַר יְהוָ֔ה צִדְקִיָּ֖הוּ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה כֹּֽה אָמַ֤ר יְהוָה֙ עָלֶ֔י/ךָ לֹ֥א תָמ֖וּת בֶּ/חָֽרֶב
34:5 sed in pace morieris : et secundum combustiones patrum tuorum, regum priorum qui fuerunt ante te, sic comburent te : et : Vae domine, plangent te : quia verbum ego locutus sum, dicit Dominus.
*H But thou shalt die in peace, and according to the burnings of thy fathers, the former kings that were before thee, so shall they burn thee: and they shall mourn for thee, saying: Alas, Lord: for I have spoken the word, saith the Lord.
Ver. 5. Peace. That is, by a natural death. Ch. — Burn thee, like Asa; (2 Par. xvi. 14. C.) or aromatical spices were only burnt over their dead bodies, which were also embalmed. Sanct. Vat. &c. — Tostat says that Sedecias was intoxicated, for sport, (Hab. ii. 15.) and died of grief in prison. C. lii. 11. C. — The king of Babylon would probably not refuse him a decent burial. Watson, Let. vi.
41_5 ἐν εἰρήνῃ ἀποθανῇ· καὶ ὡς ἔκλαυσαν τοὺς πατέρας σου τοὺς βασιλεύσαντας πρότερόν σου, κλαύσονται καὶ σὲ, οὐαὶ Κύριε, καὶ ἕως ᾅδου κόψονταί σε, ὅτι λόγον ἐγὼ ἐλάλησα, εἶπε Κύριος.

34:6 Et locutus est Jeremias propheta ad Sedeciam regem Juda universa verba haec in Jerusalem.
And Jeremias the prophet spoke all these words to Sedecias the king of Juda in Jerusalem.
41_6 Καὶ ἐλάλησεν Ἱερεμίας πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα Σεδεκίαν πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους ἐν Ἱερουσαλήμ.
וַ/יְדַבֵּר֙ יִרְמְיָ֣הוּ הַ/נָּבִ֔יא אֶל צִדְקִיָּ֖הוּ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה אֵ֛ת כָּל הַ/דְּבָרִ֥ים הָ/אֵ֖לֶּה בִּ/ירוּשָׁלִָֽם
34:7 Et exercitus regis Babylonis pugnabat contra Jerusalem, et contra omnes civitates Juda quae reliquae erant, contra Lachis et contra Azecha : hae enim supererant de civitatibus Juda, urbes munitae.
*H And the army of the king of Babylon fought against Jerusalem, and against all the cities of Juda that were left, against Lachis, and against Azecha: for these remained of the cities of Juda, fenced cities.
Ver. 7. Lachis, near Hebron. Detachments were sent to different places.
41_7 Καὶ ἡ δύναμις βασιλέως Βαβυλῶνος ἐπολέμει ἐπὶ Ἱερουσαλὴμ, καὶ ἐπὶ τὰς πόλεις Ἰούδα, καὶ ἐπὶ Λαχὶς, καὶ ἐπὶ Ἄζηκα, ὅτι αὗται κατελείφθησαν ἐν πόλεσιν Ἰούδα πόλεις ὀχυραί.

34:8 Verbum quod factum est ad Jeremiam a Domino, postquam percussit rex Sedecias foedus cum omni populo in Jerusalem, praedicans
The word that came to Jeremias from the Lord, after that king Sedecias had made a covenant with all the people in Jerusalem making a proclamation:
41_8 Ὁ λόγος ὁ γενόμενος πρὸς Ἱερεμίαν παρὰ Κυρίου, μετὰ τὸ συντελέσαι τὸν βασιλέα Σεδεκίαν διαθήκην πρὸς τὸν λαὸν, τοῦ καλέσαι ἄφεσιν,
הַ/דָּבָ֛ר אֲשֶׁר הָיָ֥ה אֶֽל יִרְמְיָ֖הוּ מֵ/אֵ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה אַחֲרֵ֡י כְּרֹת֩ הַ/מֶּ֨לֶךְ צִדְקִיָּ֜הוּ בְּרִ֗ית אֶת כָּל הָ/עָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בִּ/ירֽוּשָׁלִַ֔ם לִ/קְרֹ֥א לָ/הֶ֖ם דְּרֽוֹר
34:9 ut dimitteret unusquisque servum suum et unusquisque ancillam suam, Hebraeum et Hebraeam, liberos, et nequaquam dominarentur eis, id est, in Judaeo et fratre suo.
*H That every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant, being Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, go free: and that they should not lord it over them, to wit, over the Jews their brethren.
Ver. 9. Brethren. The sabbatical year happened in the 9th of Sedecias, when the Chaldees approaching, caused him to shew some signs of religion. But when they departed to meet the Egyptians, the people repented of what they had done well. C. — Such a relapse offends God more than the former sins, as our Saviour shews by a parable. Mat. xviii. W.
41_9 τοῦ ἐξαποστεῖλαι ἕκαστον τὸν παῖδα αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἕκαστον τὴν παιδίσκην αὐτοῦ, τὸν Ἑβραῖον καὶ τὴν Ἑβραίαν ἐλευθέρους, πρὸς τὸ μὴ δουλεύειν ἄνδρα ἐξ Ἰούδα.
לְ֠/שַׁלַּח אִ֣ישׁ אֶת עַבְדּ֞/וֹ וְ/אִ֧ישׁ אֶת שִׁפְחָת֛/וֹ הָ/עִבְרִ֥י וְ/הָ/עִבְרִיָּ֖ה חָפְשִׁ֑ים לְ/בִלְתִּ֧י עֲבָד בָּ֛/ם בִּ/יהוּדִ֥י אָחִ֖י/הוּ אִֽישׁ
34:10 Audierunt ergo omnes principes et universus populus qui inierant pactum ut dimitteret unusquisque servum suum et unusquisque ancillam suam liberos, et ultra non dominarentur eis : audierunt igitur, et dimiserunt.
And all the princes, and all the people who entered into the covenant, heard that every man should let his manservant, and every man his maidservant go free, and should no more have dominion over them: and they obeyed, and let them go free.
41_10 Καὶ ἐπεστράφησαν πάντες οἱ μεγιστᾶνες, καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς οἱ εἰσελθόντες ἐν τῇ διαθήκῃ, τοῦ ἀποστεῖλαι ἕκαστον τὸν παῖδα αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἕκαστον τὴν παιδίσκην αὐτοῦ,
וַ/יִּשְׁמְעוּ֩ כָל הַ/שָּׂרִ֨ים וְ/כָל הָ/עָ֜ם אֲשֶׁר בָּ֣אוּ בַ/בְּרִ֗ית לְ֠/שַׁלַּח אִ֣ישׁ אֶת עַבְדּ֞/וֹ וְ/אִ֤ישׁ אֶת שִׁפְחָת/וֹ֙ חָפְשִׁ֔ים לְ/בִלְתִּ֥י עֲבָד בָּ֖/ם ע֑וֹד וַֽ/יִּשְׁמְע֖וּ וַ/יְשַׁלֵּֽחוּ
34:11 Et conversi sunt deinceps : et retraxerunt servos et ancillas suas quos dimiserant liberos, et subjugaverunt in famulos et famulas.
But afterwards they turned: and brought back again their servants and their handmaids, whom they had let go free, and brought them into subjection as menservants and maidservants.
41_11 καὶ ἐῶσαν αὐτοὺς εἰς παῖδας καὶ παιδίσκας.
וַ/יָּשׁ֨וּבוּ֙ אַחֲרֵי כֵ֔ן וַ/יָּשִׁ֗בוּ אֶת הָֽ/עֲבָדִים֙ וְ/אֶת הַ/שְּׁפָח֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר שִׁלְּח֖וּ חָפְשִׁ֑ים ו/יכבישו/ם וַֽ/יִּכְבְּשׁ֔וּ/ם לַ/עֲבָדִ֖ים וְ/לִ/שְׁפָחֽוֹת

Thus saith the Lord the God of Israel: I made a covenant with your fathers in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage, saying:

And you turned to day, and did that which was right in my eyes, in proclaiming liberty every one to his brother: and you made a covenant in my sight, in the house upon which my name is invocated.
41_15 Καὶ ἐπέστρεψαν σήμερον ποιῆσαι τὸ εὐθὲς πρὸ ὀφθαλμῶν μου, τοῦ καλέσαι ἄφεσιν ἕκαστον τοῦ πλησίον αὐτοῦ· καὶ συνετέλεσαν διαθήκην κατὰ πρόσωπόν μου, ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ οὗ ἐπεκλήθη τὸ ὄνομά μου ἐπʼ αὐτῷ.
וַ/תָּשֻׁ֨בוּ אַתֶּ֜ם הַ/יּ֗וֹם וַ/תַּעֲשׂ֤וּ אֶת הַ/יָּשָׁר֙ בְּ/עֵינַ֔/י לִ/קְרֹ֥א דְר֖וֹר אִ֣ישׁ לְ/רֵעֵ֑/הוּ וַ/תִּכְרְת֤וּ בְרִית֙ לְ/פָנַ֔/י בַּ/בַּ֕יִת אֲשֶׁר נִקְרָ֥א שְׁמִ֖/י עָלָֽי/ו
34:16 et reversi estis, et commaculastis nomen meum, et reduxistis unusquisque servum suum et unusquisque ancillam suam quos dimiseratis ut essent liberi et suae potestatis, et subjugastis eos ut sint vobis servi et ancillae.

34:17 Propterea haec dicit Dominus : Vos non audistis me, ut praedicaretis libertatem unusquisque fratri suo et unusquisque amico suo : ecce ego praedico vobis libertatem, ait Dominus, ad gladium, ad pestem, et ad famem, et dabo vos in commotionem cunctis regnis terrae.
*H Therefore thus saith the Lord: You have not hearkened to me, in proclaiming liberty every man to his brother and every man to his friend: behold I proclaim a liberty for you, saith the Lord, to the sword, to the pestilence, and to the famine: and I will cause you to be removed to all the kingdoms of the earth.
Ver. 17. For you. I acknowledge you no longer as my servant. I will let loose the sword, &c. against you.

And the Hethites, and the Pherezites, the Raphaim also,
*H And I will give the men that have transgressed my covenant, and have not performed the words of the covenant which they agreed to in my presence, when they cut the calf in two and passed between the parts thereof:
Ver. 18. Parts. This was done to signify that if they transgressed, they consented to be slain. Gen. xv. 9. 17. It seems Sedecias and his subjects had solemnly ratified the covenant made at Sinai, being impressed with fear of the enemy.
41_18 Καὶ δώσω τοὺς ἄνδρας τοὺς παρεληλυθότας τὴν διαθήκην μου, τοὺς μὴ στήσαντας τὴν διαθήκην μου, ἣν ἐποίησαν κατὰ πρόσωπόν μου, τὸν μόσχον ὃν ἐποίησαν ἐργάζεσθαι αὐτῷ,
וְ/נָתַתִּ֣י אֶת הָ/אֲנָשִׁ֗ים הָ/עֹֽבְרִים֙ אֶת בְּרִתִ֔/י אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא הֵקִ֨ימוּ֙ אֶת דִּבְרֵ֣י הַ/בְּרִ֔ית אֲשֶׁ֥ר כָּרְת֖וּ לְ/פָנָ֑/י הָ/עֵ֨גֶל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר כָּרְת֣וּ לִ/שְׁנַ֔יִם וַ/יַּעַבְר֖וּ בֵּ֥ין בְּתָרָֽי/ו

שָׂרֵ֨י יְהוּדָ֜ה וְ/שָׂרֵ֣י יְרוּשָׁלִַ֗ם הַ/סָּֽרִסִים֙ וְ/הַ/כֹּ֣הֲנִ֔ים וְ/כֹ֖ל עַ֣ם הָ/אָ֑רֶץ הָ/עֹ֣בְרִ֔ים בֵּ֖ין בִּתְרֵ֥י הָ/עֵֽגֶל
34:20 et dabo eos in manus inimicorum suorum, et in manus quaerentium animam eorum, et erit morticinum eorum in escam volatilibus caeli et bestiis terrae.
And I will give them into the hands of their enemies, and into the hands of them that seek their life: and their dead bodies shall be for meat to the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the earth.
41_20 Καὶ δώσω αὐτοὺς τοῖς ἐχθροῖς αὐτῶν, καὶ ἔσται τὰ θνησιμαῖα αὐτῶν βρῶσις τοῖς πετεινοῖς τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καὶ τοῖς θηρίοις τῆς γῆς.
וְ/נָתַתִּ֤י אוֹתָ/ם֙ בְּ/יַ֣ד אֹֽיְבֵי/הֶ֔ם וּ/בְ/יַ֖ד מְבַקְשֵׁ֣י נַפְשָׁ֑/ם וְ/הָיְתָ֤ה נִבְלָתָ/ם֙ לְ/מַֽאֲכָ֔ל לְ/ע֥וֹף הַ/שָּׁמַ֖יִם וּ/לְ/בֶהֱמַ֥ת הָ/אָֽרֶץ
34:21 Et Sedeciam regem Juda, et principes ejus, dabo in manus inimicorum suorum, et in manus quaerentium animas eorum, et in manus exercituum regis Babylonis, qui recesserunt a vobis.
*H And Sedecias the king of Juda, and his princes, I will give into the hands of their enemies, and into the hands of them that seek their lives, and into the hands of the armies of the king of Babylon, which are gone from you.

41_21 Καὶ τὸν Σεδεκίαν βασιλέα τῆς Ἰουδαίας, καὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας αὐτῶν δώσω εἰς χεῖρας ἐχθρῶν αὐτῶν, καὶ δύναμις βασιλέως Βαβυλῶνος τοῖς ἀποτρέχουσιν ἀπʼ αὐτῶν.
וְ/אֶת צִדְקִיָּ֨הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ יְהוּדָ֜ה וְ/אֶת שָׂרָ֗י/ו אֶתֵּן֙ בְּ/יַ֣ד אֹֽיְבֵי/הֶ֔ם וּ/בְ/יַ֖ד מְבַקְשֵׁ֣י נַפְשָׁ֑/ם וּ/בְ/יַד חֵ֚יל מֶ֣לֶךְ בָּבֶ֔ל הָ/עֹלִ֖ים מֵ/עֲלֵי/כֶֽם
34:22 Ecce ego praecipio, dicit Dominus, et reducam eos in civitatem hanc, et praeliabuntur adversus eam, et capient eam, et incendent igni : et civitates Juda dabo in solitudinem, eo quod non sit habitator.
*H Behold I will command, saith the Lord, and I will bring them again to this city, and they shall fight against it, and take it, and burn it with fire: and I will make the cities of Juda a desolation, without an inhabitant.
Ver. 22. Command. He did not approve of their cruelty, but used them as scourges. W.
41_22 Ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ συντάσσω, φησὶ Κύριος, καὶ ἐπιστρέψω αὐτοὺς εἰς τὴν γῆν ταύτην, καὶ πολεμήσουσιν ἐπʼ αὐτὴν, καὶ λήψονται αὐτὴν, καὶ κατακαύσουσιν αὐτὴν ἐν πυρὶ, καὶ τὰς πόλεις Ἰούδα, καὶ δώσω αὐτὰς ἐρήμους ἀπὸ τῶν κατοικούντων.
הִנְ/נִ֨י מְצַוֶּ֜ה נְאֻם יְהוָ֗ה וַ/הֲשִׁ֨בֹתִ֜י/ם אֶל הָ/עִ֤יר הַ/זֹּאת֙ וְ/נִלְחֲמ֣וּ עָלֶ֔י/הָ וּ/לְכָד֖וּ/הָ וּ/שְׂרָפֻ֣/הָ בָ/אֵ֑שׁ וְ/אֶת עָרֵ֧י יְהוּדָ֛ה אֶתֵּ֥ן שְׁמָמָ֖ה מֵ/אֵ֥ין יֹשֵֽׁב
