And it came to pass, that when Jeremias had made an end of speaking to the people all the words of the Lord their God, for which the Lord their God had sent him to them, all these words:
50_1 Καὶ ἐγενήθη, ὡς ἐπαύσατο Ἱερεμίας λέγων πρὸς τὸν λαὸν πάντας τοὺς λόγους Κυρίου, οὓς ἀπέστειλεν αὐτὸν Κύριος πρὸς αὐτοὺς, πάντας τοὺς λόγους τούτους,

43:2 dixit Azarias filius Osaiae, et Johanan filius Caree, et omnes viri superbi, dicentes ad Jeremiam : Mendacium tu loqueris : non misit te Dominus Deus noster, dicens : Ne ingrediamini Aegyptum ut habitetis illuc.
*H Azarias the son of Osaias, and Johanan the son of Caree, and all the proud men, made answer, saying to Jeremias: Thou tellest a lie: the Lord our God hath not sent thee, saying: Go not into Egypt, to dwell there.
Ver. 2. Proud and headstrong. C. — Sinful people easily become worse. They are guilty of calumny, and comply not with their promise. C. xlii. 5. W.
50_2 καὶ εἶπεν Ἀζαρίας υἱὸς Μαασαίου, καὶ Ἰωάναν υἱὸς Κάρηε, καὶ πάντες οἱ ἄνδρες, οἱ εἰπόντες τῷ Ἱερεμίᾳ, λέγοντες, ψεύδη, οὐκ ἀπέστειλέ σε Κύριος πρὸς ἡμᾶς, λέγων, μὴ εἰσέλθητε εἰς Αἴγυπτον οἰκεῖν ἐκεῖ,
וַ/יֹּ֨אמֶר עֲזַרְיָ֤ה בֶן הוֹשַֽׁעְיָה֙ וְ/יוֹחָנָ֣ן בֶּן קָרֵ֔חַ וְ/כָל הָ/אֲנָשִׁ֖ים הַ/זֵּדִ֑ים אֹמְרִ֣ים אֶֽל יִרְמְיָ֗הוּ שֶׁ֚קֶר אַתָּ֣ה מְדַבֵּ֔ר לֹ֣א שְׁלָחֲ/ךָ֞ יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֵ֨י/נוּ֙ לֵ/אמֹ֔ר לֹֽא תָבֹ֥אוּ מִצְרַ֖יִם לָ/ג֥וּר שָֽׁם
43:3 Sed Baruch filius Neriae incitat te adversum nos, ut tradat nos in manus Chaldaeorum, ut interficiat nos, et traduci faciat in Babylonem.
*H But Baruch the son of Nerias setteth thee on against us, to deliver us into the hands of the Chaldeans, to kill us, and to cause us to be carried away captives to Babylon.
Ver. 3. Baruch. He had been at Babylon, and was liberated with Jeremias, always speaking with moderation of the king of Babylon, and exhorting the people to submission. This was enough to make the populace suspect. They are incapable of reasoning.
50_3 ἀλλʼ ἢ Βαροὺχ υἱὸς Νηρίου συμβάλλει σε πρὸς ἡμᾶς, ἵνα δῷς ἡμᾶς εἰς χεῖρας τῶν Χαλδαίων, τοῦ θανατῶσαι ἡμᾶς, καὶ ἀποικισθῆναι ἡμᾶς εἰς Βαβυλῶνα.
כִּ֗י בָּרוּךְ֙ בֶּן נֵ֣רִיָּ֔ה מַסִּ֥ית אֹתְ/ךָ֖ בָּ֑/נוּ לְמַעַן֩ תֵּ֨ת אֹתָ֤/נוּ בְ/יַֽד הַ/כַּשְׂדִּים֙ לְ/הָמִ֣ית אֹתָ֔/נוּ וּ/לְ/הַגְל֥וֹת אֹתָ֖/נוּ בָּבֶֽל
43:4 Et non audivit Johanan filius Caree, et omnes principes bellatorum, et universus populus, vocem Domini, ut manerent in terra Juda.
So Johanan the son of Caree, and all the captains of the soldiers, and all the people, obeyed not the voice of the Lord, to remain in the land of Juda.
50_4 Καὶ οὐκ ἤκουσεν Ἰωάναν, καὶ πάντες ἡγεμόνες τῆς δυνάμεως, καὶ πᾶς ὁ λαὸς τῆς φωνῆς Κυρίου, κατοικῆσαι ἐν γῇ Ἰούδα.
וְ/לֹֽא שָׁמַע֩ יוֹחָנָ֨ן בֶּן קָרֵ֜חַ וְ/כָל שָׂרֵ֧י הַ/חֲיָלִ֛ים וְ/כָל הָ/עָ֖ם בְּ/ק֣וֹל יְהוָ֑ה לָ/שֶׁ֖בֶת בְּ/אֶ֥רֶץ יְהוּדָֽה
43:5 Sed tollens Johanan filius Caree, et universi principes bellatorum, universos reliquiarum Juda, qui reversi fuerant de cunctis gentibus ad quas fuerant ante dispersi, ut habitarent in terra Juda,
But Johanan the son of Caree, and all the captains of the soldiers took all the remnant of Juda, that were returned out of all nations, to which they had before been scattered, to dwell in the land of Juda:
50_5 Καὶ ἔλαβεν Ἰωάναν, καὶ πάντες οἱ ἡγεμόνες τῆς δυνάμεως πάντας τοὺς καταλοίπους Ἰούδα, τοὺς ἀποστρέψαντας κατοικεῖν ἐν τῇ γῃ,
וַ/יִּקַּ֞ח יוֹחָנָ֤ן בֶּן קָרֵ֨חַ֙ וְ/כָל שָׂרֵ֣י הַ/חֲיָלִ֔ים אֵ֖ת כָּל שְׁאֵרִ֣ית יְהוּדָ֑ה אֲשֶׁר שָׁ֗בוּ מִ/כָּל הַ/גּוֹיִם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר נִדְּחוּ שָׁ֔ם לָ/ג֖וּר בְּ/אֶ֥רֶץ יְהוּדָֽה
43:6 viros, et mulieres, et parvulos, et filias regis, et omnem animam quam reliquerat Nabuzardan princeps militiae cum Godolia filio Ahicam filii Saphan, et Jeremiam prophetam, et Baruch filium Neriae :
*H Men, and women, and children, and the king's daughters, and every soul, which Nabuzardan the general had left with Godolias the son of Ahicam the son of Saphan, and Jeremias the prophet, and Baruch the son of Nerias.
Ver. 6. And Baruch, by compulsion. W. C. — Hence God did not cease to speak by their mouth. H.
50_6 τοὺς δυνατοὺς ἄνδρας, καὶ τὰς γυναῖκας, καὶ τὰ νήπια τὰ λοιπὰ, καὶ τὰς θυγατέρας τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ τὰς ψυχὰς ἃς κατέλιπε Ναβουζαρδὰν μετὰ Γοδολίου υἱοῦ Ἀχεικὰμ, καὶ Ἱερεμίαν τὸν προφήτην, καὶ Βαροὺχ, υἱὸν Νηρίου,
אֶֽת הַ֠/גְּבָרִים וְ/אֶת הַ/נָּשִׁ֣ים וְ/אֶת הַ/טַּף֮ וְ/אֶת בְּנ֣וֹת הַ/מֶּלֶךְ֒ וְ/אֵ֣ת כָּל הַ/נֶּ֗פֶשׁ אֲשֶׁ֤ר הִנִּ֨יחַ֙ נְבוּזַרְאֲדָ֣ן רַב טַבָּחִ֔ים אֶת גְּדַלְיָ֖הוּ בֶּן אֲחִיקָ֣ם בֶּן שָׁפָ֑ן וְ/אֵת֙ יִרְמְיָ֣הוּ הַ/נָּבִ֔יא וְ/אֶת בָּר֖וּךְ בֶּן נֵרִיָּֽהוּ
43:7 et ingressi sunt terram Aegypti, quia non obedierunt voci Domini, et venerunt usque ad Taphnis.
And they went into the land of Egypt, for they obeyed not the voice of the Lord: and they came as far as Taphnis.
50_7 καὶ εἰσῆλθον εἰς Αἴγυπτον, ὅτι οὐκ ἤκουσαν τῆς φωνῆς Κυρίου, καὶ εἰσῆλθον εἰς Τάφνας.
וַ/יָּבֹ֨אוּ֙ אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרַ֔יִם כִּ֛י לֹ֥א שָׁמְע֖וּ בְּ/ק֣וֹל יְהוָ֑ה וַ/יָּבֹ֖אוּ עַד תַּחְפַּנְחֵֽס
43:8 Et factus est sermo Domini ad Jeremiam in Taphnis, dicens :
*H And the word of the Lord came to Jeremias in Taphnis, saying:
Ver. 8. Taphnis, or Daphnæ Pelusiæ, sixteen miles from Pelusium, (Antonin.) the Hanes of Isaias, (xxx. 4.) and key of Egypt. It was a royal city.
50_8 Καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου πρὸς Ἱερεμίαν ἐν Τάφνας, λέγων,
וַ/יְהִ֤י דְבַר יְהוָה֙ אֶֽל יִרְמְיָ֔הוּ בְּ/תַחְפַּנְחֵ֖ס לֵ/אמֹֽר
43:9 Sume lapides grandes in manu tua, et abscondes eos in crypta quae est sub muro latericio in porta domus Pharaonis in Taphnis, cernentibus viris Judaeis :
*H Take great stones in thy hand, and thou shalt hide them in the vault that is under the brick wall at the gate of Pharao's house in Taphnis: in the sight of the men of Juda.
Ver. 9. Wall; kiln, or court. Heb. Justice was administered at the gate, and the magnificent throne of Solomon was placed in the court or porch. 3 K. x. 18. C. — The prophet preaches by facts, laying great stones in the chief city. C. xix. 10. W.
50_9 λάβε σεαυτῷ λίθους μεγάλους, καὶ κατάκρυψον αὐτοὺς ἐν προθύροις, ἐν πύλῃ τῆς οἰκίας Φαραὼ ἐν Τάφνας, κατʼ ὀφθαλμοὺς ἀνδρῶν Ἰούδα,
קַ֣ח בְּ/יָדְ/ךָ֞ אֲבָנִ֣ים גְּדֹל֗וֹת וּ/טְמַנְתָּ֤/ם בַּ/מֶּ֨לֶט֙ בַּ/מַּלְבֵּ֔ן אֲשֶׁ֛ר בְּ/פֶ֥תַח בֵּית פַּרְעֹ֖ה בְּ/תַחְפַּנְחֵ֑ס לְ/עֵינֵ֖י אֲנָשִׁ֥ים יְהוּדִֽים
43:10 et dices ad eos : Haec dicit Dominus exercituum, Deus Israel : Ecce ego mittam et assumam Nabuchodonosor regem Babylonis, servum meum : et ponam thronum ejus super lapides istos quos abscondi, et statuet solium suum super eos :
*H And thou shalt say to them: Thus saith the Lord of hosts the God of Israel: Behold I will send, and take Nabuchodonosor the king of Babylon my servant: and I will set his throne over these stones which I have hid, and he shall set his throne over them.
Ver. 10. Servant. The greatest monarchs only execute God's decrees.
50_10 καὶ ἐρεῖς, οὕτως εἶπε Κύριος, ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἀποστέλλω, καὶ ἄξω Ναβουχοδονόσορ βασιλέα Βαβυλῶνος, καὶ θήσει αὐτοῦ τὸν θρόνον ἐπάνω τῶν λίθων τούτων ὧν κατέκρυψας, καὶ ἀρεῖ τᾶ ὅπλα ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς,
וְ/אָמַרְתָּ֣ אֲלֵי/הֶ֡ם כֹּֽה אָמַר֩ יְהוָ֨ה צְבָא֜וֹת אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל הִנְ/נִ֤י שֹׁלֵ֨חַ֙ וְ֠/לָקַחְתִּי אֶת נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֤ר מֶֽלֶךְ בָּבֶל֙ עַבְדִּ֔/י וְ/שַׂמְתִּ֣י כִסְא֔/וֹ מִ/מַּ֛עַל לָ/אֲבָנִ֥ים הָ/אֵ֖לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֣ר טָמָ֑נְתִּי וְ/נָטָ֥ה אֶת שפרור/ו שַׁפְרִיר֖/וֹ עֲלֵי/הֶֽם
43:11 veniensque percutiet terram Aegypti, quos in mortem, in mortem, et quos in captivitatem, in captivitatem, et quos in gladium, in gladium :
And he shall come and strike the land of Egypt: such as are for death, to death: and such as are for captivity, to captivity: and such as are for the sword, to the sword.
50_11 καὶ εἰσελεύσεται, καὶ πατάξει γῆν Αἰγύπτου, οὓς εἰς θάνατον εἰς θάνατον, καὶ οὓς εἰς ἀποικισμὸν εἰς ἀποικισμὸν, καὶ οὓς εἰς ῥομφαίαν εἰς ῥομφαίαν.
ו/בא/ה וּ/בָ֕א וְ/הִכָּ֖ה אֶת אֶ֣רֶץ מִצְרָ֑יִם אֲשֶׁ֧ר לַ/מָּ֣וֶת לַ/מָּ֗וֶת וַ/אֲשֶׁ֤ר לַ/שְּׁבִי֙ לַ/שֶּׁ֔בִי וַ/אֲשֶׁ֥ר לַ/חֶ֖רֶב לֶ/חָֽרֶב
43:12 et succendet ignem in delubris deorum Aegypti, et comburet ea, et captivos ducet illos, et amicietur terra Aegypti sicut amicitur pastor pallio suo, et egredietur inde in pace :
*H And he shall kindle a fire in the temples of the gods of Egypt, and he shall burn them, and he shall carry them away captives: and he shall array himself with the land of Egypt, as a shepherd putteth on his garment: and he shall go forth from thence in peace.
Ver. 12. Temples. Heb. also, "the palaces of the princes," as temples occur below. — Captives. The idols share the fate of their votaries. C. xlviii. 7. — Array; or Heb. "cover with soldiers the land." Sept. "he shall cleanse (C.) or destroy." Bochart.
50_12 Καὶ καύσει πῦρ ἐν οἰκίαις τῶν θεῶν αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐμπυριεῖ αὐτὰς, καὶ ἀποικιεῖ αὐτοὺς, καὶ φθειριεῖ γῆν Αἰγύπτου, ὥσπερ φθειρίζει ποιμὴν τὸ ἱμάτιον αὐτοῦ· καὶ ἐξελεύσεται ἐν εἰρήνῃ,
וְ/הִצַּ֣תִּי אֵ֗שׁ בְּ/בָתֵּי֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י מִצְרַ֔יִם וּ/שְׂרָפָ֖/ם וְ/שָׁבָ֑/ם וְ/עָטָה֩ אֶת אֶ֨רֶץ מִצְרַ֜יִם כַּ/אֲשֶׁר יַעְטֶ֤ה הָֽ/רֹעֶה֙ אֶת בִּגְד֔/וֹ וְ/יָצָ֥א מִ/שָּׁ֖ם בְּ/שָׁלֽוֹם
43:13 et conteret statuas domus solis quae sunt in terra Aegypti, et delubra deorum Aegypti comburet igni.
*H And he shall break the statues of the house of the sun, that are in the land of Egypt; and the temples of the gods of Egypt he shall burn with fire.
Ver. 13. Sun. Sept. "of Heliopolis," where the largest temple of the sun was seen. Egypt was famous for its obelisks, erected by Pheron, successor of Sesostris. Some have been removed to Rome. — Fire. History does not specify the particulars: but we may judge how the conqueror would treat these temples, &c. from what Xerxes and Ochus did afterwards. C.
50_13 καὶ συντρίψει τοὺς στύλους Ἡλιουπόλεως τοὺς ἐν Ὢν, καὶ τὰς οἰκίας αὐτῶν κατακαύσει ἐν πυρί.
