Ver. 1. Melchom, the idol of the Ammonites. Ch. — Gad, to whom a part of their country was assigned. After the captivity of this tribe, the Ammonites seized the country, regardless of God's appointment. They joined the Chaldees afterwards; but the latter could not depend upon them, and sent them into captivity, to revenge the death of Godolias. C. xli. 2. Soph. ii. 8. Ezec. xxv. 3. C. — They had taken the country as their right, as if all Israel had perished; which God resents. W.

49:2 Ideo ecce dies veniunt, dicit Dominus, et auditum faciam super Rabbath filiorum Ammon fremitum praelii, et erit in tumultum dissipata, filiaeque ejus igni succendentur, et possidebit Israel possessores suos, ait Dominus.

49:3 Ulula, Hesebon, quoniam vastata est Hai ; clamate, filiae Rabbath : accingite vos ciliciis, plangite et circuite per sepes, quoniam Melchom in transmigrationem ducetur, sacerdotes ejus et principes ejus simul.
*H Howl, O Hesebon, for Hai is wasted. Cry, ye daughters of Rabbath, gird yourselves with haircloth: mourn and go about by the hedges: for Melchom shall be carried into captivity, his priests, and his princes together.
Ver. 3. Hai, or Je-abarim. Both these cities pertained also to Moab. — Hedges. Heb. Gederoth, may be the city Gadara. — Melchom, or Moloc, who claimed dominion over this people. If they had used their reason, they must have seen that he was no god, since the Lord disposed of him as he pleased so long before.
30_3 Ὅτι τρυγηταὶ ἦλθον, οἳ οὐ καταλείψουσί σοι κατάλειμμα· ὡς κλέπται ἐν νυκτὶ, ἑπιθήσουσι χεῖρα αὐτῶν.

49:4 Quid gloriaris in vallibus ? defluxit vallis tua, filia delicata, quae confidebas in thesauris tuis, et dicebas : Quis veniet ad me ?

Behold I will bring a fear upon thee, saith the Lord God of hosts, from all that are round about thee: and you shall be scattered every one out of one another's sight, neither shall there be any to gather together them that flee.
30_5 ὑπολείπεσθαι ὀρφανόν σου, ἵνα ζήσηται· καὶ ἐγὼ ζήσομαι, καὶ αἱ χῆραι ἐπʼ ἐμὲ πεποίθασιν·

And afterwards I will cause the captives of the children of Ammon to return, saith the Lord.

49:7 Ad Idumaeam. [Haec dicit Dominus exercituum : Numquid non ultra est sapientia in Theman ? periit consilium a filiis ; inutilis facta est sapientia eorum.

Ver. 8. Hole. The territory of Edom, from Eleutheropolis to Elath, is full of such. S. Jer. in Abd. — Dedan lies south of the Dead Sea. C.

If grapegatherers had come to thee, would they not have left a bunch? if thieves in the night, they would have taken what was enough for them.
אִם בֹּֽצְרִים֙ בָּ֣אוּ לָ֔/ךְ לֹ֥א יַשְׁאִ֖רוּ עֽוֹלֵל֑וֹת אִם גַּנָּבִ֥ים בַּ/לַּ֖יְלָה הִשְׁחִ֥יתוּ דַיָּֽ/ם
49:10 Ego vero discooperui Esau : revelavi abscondita ejus, et celari non poterit : vastatum est semen ejus, et fratres ejus, et vicini ejus, et non erit.
*H But I have made Esau bare, I have revealed his secrets, and he cannot be hid: his seed is laid waste, and his brethren, and his neighbours, and he shall not be.

Leave thy fatherless children: I will make them live: and thy widows shall hope in me.

49:12 Quia haec dicit Dominus : Ecce quibus non erat judicium ut biberent calicem, bibentes bibent : et tu, quasi innocens relinqueris ? non eris innocens, sed bibens bibes.
*H For thus saith the Lord: Behold they whose judgment was not to drink of the cup, shall certainly drink: and shalt thou come off as innocent? thou shalt not come off as innocent, but drinking thou shalt drink.

49:13 Quia per memetipsum juravi, dicit Dominus, quod in solitudinem, et in opprobrium, et in desertum, et in maledictionem erit Bosra, et omnes civitates ejus erunt in solitudines sempiternas.
*H For I have sworn by myself, saith the Lord, that Bosra shall become a desolation, and a reproach, and a desert, and a curse: and all her cities shall be everlasting wastes.
Ver. 13. Bosra, different from that of Ammon; (C. xlviii. 24. Cellar. iii. 14.) though this may be doubtful. Could such a city be unknown?

Ver. 14. Ambassador; Jeremias: or rather this is a personification of the passions, which would sufficiently prompt the Chaldees. C. — A good angel might urge them to execute the divine decrees. Theodoret. — The greatest armies are thus made use of by Providence, without approving of their malicious designs.

Ver. 15. Little. Edom was scarcely known, except in sacred history; and it was forced to receive circumcision by the Machabees.

Ver. 17. Desolate. The few who survived left their ancient territories, which are now a desert, like most of Stony Arabia. C. — Hiss, out of contempt. The punishment was so great as to excite surprise. W.

Ver. 19. Swelling. Lit. "pride;" (H.) or those banks which the Jordan reaches, when it overflows. They are lined with woods, from which lions rush to devour the sheep. C. — Strong "one's dwelling." Heb. H. Zac. xi. 3. — Over her. What sort of men come to the attack? or, who shall dare to resist them? C.

*H Therefore hear ye the counsel of the Lord, which he hath taken concerning Edom: and his thoughts which he hath thought concerning the inhabitants of Theman: surely the little ones of the flock shall cast them down, of a truth they shall destroy them with their habitation.
Ver. 20. Little. Chal. "chiefs of the people." Tsáir (H.) is supposed to have this sense. Mic. v. 2. C. — But the weakest of the Chaldees will be an overmatch for Edom. H.

The earth is moved at the noise of their fall: the cry of their voice is heard in the Red Sea.

Behold he shall come up as an eagle, and fly: and he shall spread his wings over Bosra: and in that day the heart of the valiant ones of Edom shall be as the heart of a woman in labour.

49:23 Ad Damascum. [Confusa est Emath et Arphad, quia auditum pessimum audierunt : turbati sunt in mari ; prae sollicitudine quiescere non potuit.
*H Against Damascus. Emath is confounded and Arphad: for they have heard very bad tidings, they are troubled as in the sea: through care they could not rest.
Ver. 23. Damascus, the capital of Syria. Is. vii. 8. W. — It was punished at the same time as the rest. Jos. — Arphad; Arad, an island near Tyre, or Raphanæ. Theod. — Syr. "Rephad...they are troubled from the sea." Nabuchodonosor left Tyre to invade them. C. — As in. The islands of the Mediterranean tremble for themselves, and all Syria is afraid, hearing of the fall of so many cities and nations.
30_12 Ὥσπερ κατεστράφη Σόδομα καὶ Γόμοῤῥα, καὶ αἱ πάροικοι αὐτῆς, εἶπε Κύριος παντοκράτωρ, οὐ μὴ καθίσει ἐκεῖ ἄνθρωπος, καὶ οὐ μὴ κατοικήσει ἐκεῖ υἱὸς ἀνθρώπου.

Damascus is undone, she is put to flight, trembling hath seized on her: anguish and sorrows have taken her as a woman in labour.
30_13 Ἰδοὺ ὥσπερ λέων ἀναβήσεται ἐκ μέσου τοῦ Ἰορδάνου εἰς τόπον Αἰθὰμ, ὅτι ταχὺ ἐκδιώξω αὐτοὺς ἀπʼ αὐτῆς, καὶ τοὺς νεανίσκους ἐπʼ αὐτὴν ἐπιστήσατε· ὅτι τίς ὥσπερ ἐγώ; καὶ τίς ἀντιστήσεταί μοι; καὶ τίς οὗτος ποιμὴν, ὃς στήσεται κατὰ πρόσωπόν μου;

49:25 Quomodo dereliquerunt civitatem laudabilem, urbem laetitiae ?
*H How have they forsaken the city of renown, the city of joy!
Ver. 25. They. Heb. Sept. and Chal. add, "not." Why have they not spared this beautiful city? or, why have not its citizens given it up, to prevent its entire demolition?
30_14 Διατοῦτο ἀκούσατε βουλὴν Κυρίου, ἣν ἐβουλεύσατο ἐπὶ τὴν Ἰδουμαίαν, καὶ λογισμὸν αὐτοῦ, ὃν ἐλογίσατο ἐπὶ τοὺς κατοικοῦντας Θαιμὰν, ἐὰν μὴ συμψησθῶσι τὰ ἐλάχιστα τῶν προβάτων, ἐὰν μὴ ἀβατωθῇ ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς κατάλυσις αὐτῶν,
אֵ֥יךְ לֹֽא עֻזְּבָ֖ה עִ֣יר תהלה תְּהִלָּ֑ת קִרְיַ֖ת מְשׂוֹשִֽׂ/י
49:26 Ideo cadent juvenes ejus in plateis ejus, et omnes viri praelii conticescent in die illa, ait Dominus exercituum.
Therefore her young men shall fall in her streets: and all the men of war shall be silent in that day, saith the Lord of hosts.
30_15 ὅτι ἀπὸ φωνῆς πτώσεως αὐτῶν ἐφοβήθη ἡ γῆ, καὶ κραυγὴ θαλάσσης οὐκ ἠκούσθη.

49:27 Et succendam ignem in muro Damasci, et devorabit moenia Benadad.]
*H And I will kindle a fire in the wall of Damascus, and it shall devour the strong holds of Benadad.

30_16 Ἰδοὺ ὥσπερ ἀετὸς ὄψεται, καὶ ἐκτενεῖ τὰς πτέρυγας ἐπʼ ὀχυρώματα αὐτῆς· καὶ ἔσται ἡ καρδία τῶν ἰσχυρῶν τῆς Ἰδουμαίας ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ ἐκείνῃ, ὡς καρδία γυναικὸς ὠδινούσης.
וְ/הִצַּ֥תִּי אֵ֖שׁ בְּ/חוֹמַ֣ת דַּמָּ֑שֶׂק וְ/אָכְלָ֖ה אַרְמְנ֥וֹת בֶּן הֲדָֽד
49:28 Ad Cedar, et ad regna Asor, quae percussit Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis. [Haec dicit Dominus : Surgite, et ascendite ad Cedar, et vastate filios orientis.
*H Against Cedar and against the kingdoms of Asor, which Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon destroyed. Thus saith the Lord: Arise, and go ye up to Cedar, and waste the children of the east.
Ver. 28. Cedar and Asor were parts of Arabia; which, with Moab, Ammon, Edom, &c. were all brought under the yoke of Nabuchodonosor. Ch. — We know nothing of the situation of Asor, which means "a court." C. — It might be the flying camp (Theod.) of the Saracens, (S. Jer. in Is. xxi. 16.) who dwelt under tents like the hordes of Tartars, the Ethiopian emperor, and the mogul. Yet this seems to have been a fixed habitation. v. 30. 33. — East; the Desert Arabia. v. 32. C. — Cedar was the son of Ismael, and Asor the chief city of the Agarens. W.
30_6 Ὅτι τάδε εἶπε Κύριος, οἷς οὐκ ἦν νόμος πιεῖν τὸ ποτήριον, ἔπιον· καὶ σὺ ἀθωωμένη οὐ μὴ ἀθωωθῇς,
לְ/קֵדָ֣ר וּֽ/לְ/מַמְלְכ֣וֹת חָצ֗וֹר אֲשֶׁ֤ר הִכָּה֙ נבוכדראצור נְבֽוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֣ר מֶֽלֶךְ בָּבֶ֔ל כֹּ֖ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֑ה ק֚וּמוּ עֲל֣וּ אֶל קֵדָ֔ר וְ/שָׁדְד֖וּ אֶת בְּנֵי קֶֽדֶם
49:29 Tabernacula eorum, et greges eorum capient : pelles eorum, et omnia vasa eorum, et camelos eorum tollent sibi, et vocabunt super eos formidinem in circuitu.
*H They shall take their tents, and their flocks: and shall carry off for themselves their curtains, and all their vessels, and their camels: and they shall call fear upon them round about.
Ver. 29. About. The enemy shall terrify them, and plunder all their riches.
30_7 ὅτι κατʼ ἐμαυτοῦ ὤμοσα, λέγει Κύριος, ὅτι εἰς ἄβατον καὶ εἰς ὀνειδισμὸν, καὶ εἰς κατάρασιν ἔσῃ ἐν μέσῳ αὐτῆς, καὶ πᾶσαι αἱ πόλεις αὐτῆς ἔσονται ἔρημοι εἰς αἰῶνα.

49:30 Fugite, abite vehementer, in voraginibus sedete, qui habitatis Asor, ait Dominus : iniit enim contra vos Nabuchodonosor rex Babylonis consilium, et cogitavit adversum vos cogitationes.
Flee ye, get away speedily, sit in deep holes, you that inhabit Asor, saith the Lord: for Nabuchodonosor king of Babylon hath taken counsel against you, and hath conceived designs against you.
30_8 Ἀκοὴν ἤκουσα παρὰ Κυρίου, καὶ ἀγγέλους εἰς ἔθνη ἀπέστειλε, συνάχθητε, καὶ παραγένεσθε εἰς αὐτὴν, ἀνάστητε εἰς πόλεμον.
נֻסוּ֩ נֻּ֨דוּ מְאֹ֜ד הֶעְמִ֧יקוּ לָ/שֶׁ֛בֶת יֹשְׁבֵ֥י חָצ֖וֹר נְאֻם יְהוָ֑ה כִּֽי יָעַ֨ץ עֲלֵי/כֶ֜ם נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּ֤ר מֶֽלֶךְ בָּבֶל֙ עֵצָ֔ה וְ/חָשַׁ֥ב עלי/הם עֲלֵי/כֶ֖ם מַחֲשָׁבָֽה
49:31 Consurgite, et ascendite ad gentem quietam, et habitantem confidenter, ait Dominus : non ostia, nec vectes eis : soli habitant.
*H Arise, and go up to a nation that is at ease, and that dwelleth securely, saith the Lord: they have neither gates, nor bars: they dwell alone.
Ver. 31. Alone. We need not fear any resistance. They have no allies. C. — The ancient Suevi, of Germany, laid waste the surrounding countries, that they might appear more terrible. Cesar iv. and vi.
30_9 Μικρὸν ἔδωκά σε ἐν ἔθνεσιν, εὐκαταφρόνητον ἐν ἀνθρώποις.
ק֣וּמוּ עֲל֗וּ אֶל גּ֥וֹי שְׁלֵ֛יו יוֹשֵׁ֥ב לָ/בֶ֖טַח נְאֻם יְהוָ֑ה לֹא דְלָתַ֧יִם וְ/לֹֽא בְרִ֛יחַ ל֖/וֹ בָּדָ֥ד יִשְׁכֹּֽנוּ
49:32 Et erunt cameli eorum in direptionem, et multitudo jumentorum in praedam : et dispergam eos in omnem ventum, qui sunt attonsi in comam, et ex omni confinio eorum adducam interitum super eos, ait Dominus.
*H And their camels shall be for a spoil and the multitude of their cattle for a booty, and I will scatter into every wind them that have their hair cut round, and I will bring destruction upon them from all their confines, saith the Lord.

30_10 Ἡ παιγνία σου ἐνεχείρησέ σοι, ἰταμία καρδίας σου κατέλυσε τρυμαλιὰς πετρῶν, συνέλαβεν ἰσχὺν βουνοῦ ὑψηλοῦ· ὅτι ὕψωσεν ὥσπερ ἀετὸς νοσσιὰν αὐτοῦ, ἐκεῖθεν καθελῶ σε.
וְ/הָי֨וּ גְמַלֵּי/הֶ֜ם לָ/בַ֗ז וַ/הֲמ֤וֹן מִקְנֵי/הֶם֙ לְ/שָׁלָ֔ל וְ/זֵרִתִ֥י/ם לְ/כָל ר֖וּחַ קְצוּצֵ֣י פֵאָ֑ה וּ/מִ/כָּל עֲבָרָ֛י/ו אָבִ֥יא אֶת אֵידָ֖/ם נְאֻם יְהוָֽה
49:33 Et erit Asor in habitaculum draconum, deserta usque in aeternum : non manebit ibi vir, nec incolet eam filius hominis.]
And Asor shall be a habitation for dragons, desolate for ever: no man shall abide there, nor son of man inhabit it.
30_11 Καὶ ἔσται ἡ Ἰδουμαία εἰς ἄβατον, πᾶς ὁ παραπορευόμενος ἐπʼ αὐτὴν συριεῖ.
וְ/הָיְתָ֨ה חָצ֜וֹר לִ/מְע֥וֹן תַּנִּ֛ים שְׁמָמָ֖ה עַד עוֹלָ֑ם לֹֽא יֵשֵׁ֥ב שָׁם֙ אִ֔ישׁ וְ/לֹֽא יָג֥וּר בָּ֖/הּ בֶּן אָדָֽם
49:34 Quod facum est verbum Domini ad Jeremiam prophetam adversus Aelam, in principio regni Sedeciae regis Juda, dicens :

Ver. 34. Elam. A part of Persia. Ch. — The Elamites had besieged Jerusalem, under Manasses, (C.) and are therefore punished. W. — They were subject to Aseradon: Nabuchodonosor subdued them after the other nations. v. 36. Cyrus set his countrymen at liberty, (C.) and thus began his conquests. H. — Pagan historians assert, at random, that they were before subject to the Medes.
25_14 Ἃ ἘΠΡΟΦΗΤΕΥΣΕΝ ἹΕΡΕΜΙΑΣ ἘΠΙ ΤΑ ἜΘΝΗ ΤΑ ΑΙΛΑΜ.
אֲשֶׁ֨ר הָיָ֧ה דְבַר יְהוָ֛ה אֶל יִרְמְיָ֥הוּ הַ/נָּבִ֖יא אֶל עֵילָ֑ם בְּ/רֵאשִׁ֗ית מַלְכ֛וּת צִדְקִיָּ֥ה מֶֽלֶךְ יְהוּדָ֖ה לֵ/אמֹֽר
49:35 [Haec dicit Dominus exercituum : Ecce ego confringam arcum Aelam, et summam fortitudinem eorum :
Thus saith the Lord of hosts: Behold I will break the bow of Elam, and their chief strength.
25_15 Τάδε λέγει Κύριος, συνετρίβη τὸ τόξον Αἰλὰμ, ἀρχὴ δυναστείας αὐτῶν.
כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת הִנְ/נִ֥י שֹׁבֵ֖ר אֶת קֶ֣שֶׁת עֵילָ֑ם רֵאשִׁ֖ית גְּבוּרָתָֽ/ם
49:36 et inducam super Aelam quatuor ventos a quatuor plagis caeli, et ventilabo eos in omnes ventos istos, et non erit gens ad quam non perveniant profugi Aelam.
And I will bring upon Elam the four winds from the four quarters of heaven: and I will scatter them into all these winds: and there shall be no nation, to which the fugitives of Elam shall not come.
25_16 Καὶ ἐπάξω ἐπὶ Αἰλὰμ τέσσαρας ἀνέμους ἐκ τῶν τεσσάρων ἄκρων τοῦ οὐρανοῦ, καὶ διασπερῶ αὐτοὺς ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς ἀνέμοις τούτοις, καὶ οὐκ ἔσται ἔθνος ὃ οὐχ ἥξει ἐκεῖ, οἱ ἐξωσμένοι Αἰλάμ.
וְ/הֵבֵאתִ֨י אֶל עֵילָ֜ם אַרְבַּ֣ע רוּח֗וֹת מֵֽ/אַרְבַּע֙ קְצ֣וֹת הַ/שָּׁמַ֔יִם וְ/זֵ֣רִתִ֔י/ם לְ/כֹ֖ל הָ/רֻח֣וֹת הָ/אֵ֑לֶּה וְ/לֹֽא יִהְיֶ֣ה הַ/גּ֔וֹי אֲשֶׁ֛ר לֹֽא יָב֥וֹא שָׁ֖ם נִדְּחֵ֥י עולם עֵילָֽם
49:37 Et pavere faciam Aelam coram inimicis suis, et in conspectu quaerentium animam eorum : et adducam super eos malum, iram furoris mei, dicit Dominus, et mittam post eos gladium donec consumam eos.
And I will cause Elam to be afraid before their enemies, and in the sight of them that seek their life: and I will bring evil upon them, my fierce wrath, saith the Lord: and I will send the sword after them, till I consume them.
25_17 Καὶ πτοήσω αὐτοὺς ἐναντίον τῶν ἐχθρῶν αὐτῶν, τῶν ζητούντων τὴν ψυχὴν αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐπάξω ἐπʼ αὐτοὺς κατὰ τὴν ὀργὴν τοῦ θυμοῦ μου, καὶ ἐπαποστελῶ ὀπίσω αὐτῶν τὴν μάχαιράν μου, ἕως τοῦ ἐξαναλῶσαι αὐτούς.
וְ/הַחְתַּתִּ֣י אֶת עֵ֠ילָם לִ/פְנֵ֨י אֹיְבֵי/הֶ֜ם וְ/לִ/פְנֵ֣י מְבַקְשֵׁ֣י נַפְשָׁ֗/ם וְ/הֵבֵאתִ֨י עֲלֵי/הֶ֧ם רָעָ֛ה אֶת חֲר֥וֹן אַפִּ֖/י נְאֻם יְהוָ֑ה וְ/שִׁלַּחְתִּ֤י אַֽחֲרֵי/הֶם֙ אֶת הַ/חֶ֔רֶב עַ֥ד כַּלּוֹתִ֖/י אוֹתָֽ/ם
49:38 Et ponam solium meum in Aelam, et perdam inde reges et principes, ait Dominus.
*H And I will set my throne in Elam, and destroy kings and princes from thence, saith the Lord.

25_18 Καὶ θήσω τὸν θρόνον μου ἐν Αἰλὰμ, καὶ ἐξαποστελῶ ἐκεῖθεν βασιλέα καὶ μεγιστᾶνας.
וְ/שַׂמְתִּ֥י כִסְאִ֖/י בְּ/עֵילָ֑ם וְ/הַאֲבַדְתִּ֥י מִ/שָּׁ֛ם מֶ֥לֶךְ וְ/שָׂרִ֖ים נְאֻם יְהוָֽה
49:39 In novissimis autem diebus reverti faciam captivos Aelam, dicit Dominus.]
*H But in the latter days I will cause the captives of Elam, to return, saith the Lord.
Ver. 39. Return. They joined the standards of Cyrus, and became masters of the East. C. — This and similar texts are understood of the conversion of the Gentiles. Acts ii. 7. W.
25_19 Καὶ ἔσται ἐπʼ ἐσχάτου τῶν ἡμερῶν, καὶ ἀποστρέψω τὴν αἰχμαλωσίαν Αἰλὰμ, λέγει Κύριος.
