Ver. 1. Sedecias. This is purely historical, taken from 4 K. xxiv. 18, &c. Many doubt with reason the Jeremias inserted it, as he could not well be alive at the time when Joakim was honoured. v. 31. If he had written both this and the Book of Kings, the variations which we here discover would not be seen. It seems, therefore, that Esdras or some other has inserted it, to explain the fall of Jerusalem and the lamentations; as a similar addition has been made to Isaias. C. xxxvi. &c. See Grot. C. — The history occurs more at large, Par. ult. W.

And the city was broken up, and the men of war fled, and went out of the city in the night by the way of the gate that is between the two walls, and leadeth to the king's garden, (the Chaldeans besieging the city round about,) and they went by the way that leadeth to the wilderness.

But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after the king: and they overtook Sedecias in the desert which is near Jericho: and all his companions were scattered from him.
Καὶ κατεδίωξεν ἡ δύναμις τῶν Χαλδαίων ὀπίσω τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ κατέλαβον αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ πέραν Ἱερειχὼ, καὶ πάντες οἱ παῖδες αὐτοῦ διεσπάρησαν ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ.

And when they had taken the king, they carried him to the king of Babylon to Reblatha, which is in the land of Emath: and he gave judgment upon him.

Καὶ ἔσφαξε βασιλεὺς Βαβυλῶνος τοὺς υἱοὺς Σεδεκίου κατʼ ὀφθαλμοὺς αὐτοῦ, καὶ πάντας τοὺς ἄρχοντας Ἰούδα ἔσφαξεν ἐν Δεβλαθά.

And he put out the eyes of Sedecias, and bound him with fetters, and the king of Babylon brought him into Babylon, and he put him in prison till the day of his death.

καὶ ἐνέπρησε τὸν οἶκον Κυρίου, καὶ τὸν οἶκον τοῦ βασιλέως, καὶ πάσας τὰς οἰκίας τῆς πόλεως, καὶ πᾶσαν οἰκίαν μεγάλην ἐνέπρησεν ἐν πυρί·

And all the army of the Chaldeans that were with the general broke down all the wall of Jerusalem round about.
Καὶ πᾶν τεῖχος Ἱερουσαλὴμ κύκλῳ καθεῖλεν ἡ δύναμις τῶν Χαλδαίων, ἡ μετὰ τοῦ ἀρχιμαγείρου.

*H But Nabuzardan the general carried away captives some of the poor people, and of the rest of the common sort who remained in the city, and of the fugitives that were fled over to the king of Babylon, and the rest of the multitude.

52:16 De pauperibus vero terrae reliquit Nabuzardan princeps militiae vinitores et agricolas.
But of the poor of the land, Nabuzardan the general left some for vinedressers, and for husbandmen.
Καὶ τοὺς καταλοίπους τοῦ λαοῦ κατέλιπεν ὁ ἀρχιμάγειρος εἰς ἀμπελουργοὺς καὶ εἰς γεωργούς.
וּ/מִ/דַּלּ֣וֹת הָ/אָ֔רֶץ הִשְׁאִ֕יר נְבוּזַרְאֲדָ֖ן רַב טַבָּחִ֑ים לְ/כֹרְמִ֖ים וּ/לְ/יֹגְבִֽים
52:17 Columnas quoque aereas quae erant in domo Domini, et bases, et mare aeneum quod erat in domo Domini, confregerunt Chaldaei, et tulerunt omne aes eorum in Babylonem,
The Chaldeans also broke in pieces the brazen pillars that were in the house of the Lord, and the bases, and the sea of brass that was in the house of the Lord: and they carried all the brass of them to Babylon.
Καὶ τοὺς στύλους τοὺς χαλκοῦς τοὺς ἐν οἴκῳ Κυρίου, καὶ τὰς βάσεις, καὶ τὴν θάλασσαν τὴν χαλκῆν τὴν ἐν οἴκῳ Κυρίου συνέτριψαν οἱ Χαλδαῖοι, καὶ ἔλαβον τὸν χαλκὸν αὐτῶν, καὶ ἀπήνεγκαν εἰς Βαβυλῶνα.

And they took the caldrons, and the fleshhooks, and the psalteries, and the bowls, and the little mortars, and all the brazen vessels that had been used in the ministry: and
Καὶ τὴν στεφάνην, καὶ τὰς φιάλας, καὶ τὰς κρεάγρας, καὶ πάντα τὰ σκεύη τὰ χαλκᾶ, ἐν οἷς ἐλειτούργουν ἐν αὐτοῖς,

The general took away the pitchers, and the censers, and the pots, and the basins, and the candlesticks, and the mortars, and the cups: as many as were of gold, in gold: and as many as were of silver, in silver:
καὶ τὰς ἀπφὼθ, καὶ τὰς μασμαρὼθ, καὶ τοὺς ὑποχυτῆρας, καὶ τὰς λυχνίας, καὶ τὰς θυΐσκας, καὶ τοὺς κυάθους, ἃ ἦν χρυσᾶ χρυσᾶ, καὶ ἃ ἦν ἀργυρᾶ ἀργυρᾶ, ἔλαβεν ὁ ἀρχιμάγειρος.

And concerning the pillars, one pillar was eighteen cubits high: and a cord of twelve cubits compassed it about: but the thickness thereof was four fingers, and it was hollow within.

52:22 Et capitella super utramque aerea : altitudo capitelli unius quinque cubitorum, et retiacula et malogranata super coronam in circuitu, omnia aerea : similiter columnae secundae, et malogranata.
And chapiters of brass were upon both: and the height of one chapiter was five cubits: and network, and pomegranates were upon the chapiters round about, all of brass. The same of the second pillar, and the pomegranates.

52:23 Et fuerunt malogranata nonaginta sex dependentia : et omnia malogranata centum, retiaculis circumdabantur.
*H And there were ninety-six pomegranates hanging down: and the pomegranates being a hundred in all, were compassed with network.

And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Joachin, king of Juda, in the twelfth month, the seven and twentieth day of the month: Evilmerodach, king of Babylon, in the year that he began to reign, lifted up the head of Joachin, king of Juda, out of prison.

*H And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Joachin king of Juda, in the twelfth month, the five and twentieth day of the month, that Evilmerodach king of Babylon, in the first year of his reign, lifted up the head of Joachin king of Juda, and brought him forth out of prison.
Ver. 31. Joachin. He had been thrown into prison when 18 years old, and continued there 37 years. It is not probable that Jeremias wrote this. Evilmerodach had also been the same in prison. — Five: 4 K. has seven. Probably Nabuchodonosor died on the 25th, and his son then resolved to liberate Joachin; which he did on the 27th.
