Ver. 8. Death. The pretext was plausible, as God seemed to have promised the temple an eternal duration. 3 K. ix. 3. The Jews accused Christ of the like crime. Mat. xxvi. 61. Such questions were brought before the sanhedrim and priests. C. xxvi. 57. But the latter are here (C.) the chief accusers with "the false prophets." Sept. H. — The princes, moved by the elders, (v. 17.) acquit the prophet, (C.) at the persuasion of Ahicam. v. 24. Several priests would probably judge along with the other princes, as the examination of impostors belonged chiefly to their tribunal. H. — All is often used for most part. W.

Whether the Prophet Always Distinguishes What He Says by His Own Spirit from What He Says by the Prophetic Spirit?
Objection 1: It would seem that the prophet always distinguishes what he says by his own spirit from what he says by the prophetic spirit. For Augustine states (Confess. vi, 13) that his mother said "she could, through a certain feeling, which in words she could not express, discern betwixt Divine revelations, and the dreams of her own soul." Now prophecy is a Divine revelation, as stated above (A. 3). Therefore the prophet always distinguishes what he says by the spirit of prophecy, from what he says by his own spirit.
Obj. 2: Further, God commands nothing impossible, as Jerome [*Pelagius. Ep. xvi, among the supposititious works of St. Jerome] says. Now the prophets were commanded (Jer. 23:28): "The prophet that hath a dream, let him tell a dream; and he that hath My word, let him speak My word with truth." Therefore the prophet can distinguish what he has through the spirit of prophecy from what he sees otherwise.
Obj. 3: Further, the certitude resulting from a Divine light is greater than that which results from the light of natural reason. Now he that has science, by the light of natural reason knows for certain that he has it. Therefore he that has prophecy by a Divine light is much more certain that he has it.
_On the contrary,_ Gregory says (Hom. i super Ezech.): "It must be observed that sometimes the holy prophets, when consulted, utter certain things by their own spirit, through being much accustomed to prophesying, and think they are speaking by the prophetic spirit."
_I answer that,_ The prophet's mind is instructed by God in two ways: in one way by an express revelation, in another way by a most mysterious instinct to "which the human mind is subjected without knowing it," as Augustine says (Gen. ad lit. ii, 17). Accordingly the prophet has the greatest certitude about those things which he knows by an express revelation, and he has it for certain that they are revealed to him by God; wherefore it is written (Jer. 26:15): "In truth the Lord sent me to you, to speak all these words in your hearing." Else, were he not certain about this, the faith which relies on the utterances of the prophet would not be certain. A sign of the prophet's certitude may be gathered from the fact that Abraham being admonished in a prophetic vision, prepared to sacrifice his only-begotten son, which he nowise would have done had he not been most certain of the Divine revelation.
On the other hand, his position with regard to the things he knows by instinct is sometimes such that he is unable to distinguish fully whether his thoughts are conceived of Divine instinct or of his own spirit. And those things which we know by Divine instinct are not all manifested with prophetic certitude, for this instinct is something imperfect in the genus of prophecy. It is thus that we are to understand the saying of Gregory. Lest, however, this should lead to error, "they are very soon set aright by the Holy Ghost [*For instance, cf. 2 Kings 7:3 seqq.], and from Him they hear the truth, so that they reproach themselves for having said what was untrue," as Gregory adds (Hom. i super Ezech.).
The arguments set down in the first place consider the revelation that is made by the prophetic spirit; wherefore the answer to all the objections is clear. _______________________

*H Micheas of Morasthi was a prophet in the days of Ezechias king of Juda, and he spoke to all the people of Juda, saying: Thus saith the Lord of hosts: Sion shall be ploughed like a field, and Jerusalem shall be a heap of stones: and the mountain of the house the high places of woods.
Ver. 18. Mountain. Sion, on which the house of the Lord was built. Conquerors have sometimes ploughed up cities. C. — Jam seges est ubi Troja fuit. Ovid, ep. i.
33_18 Μιχαίας ὁ Μωραθίτης ἦν ἐν ταῖς ἡμέραις Ἐζεκίου βασιλέως Ἰούδα, καὶ εἶπε παντὶ τῷ λαῷ Ἰούδα, οὕτως εἶπε Κύριος, Σιὼν ὡς ἀγρὸς ἀροτριαθήσεται, καὶ Ἱερουσαλὴμ εἰς ἄβατον ἔσται, καὶ τὸ ὄρος τοῦ οἴκου εἰς ἄλσος δρυμοῦ.
מיכיה מִיכָה֙ הַ/מּ֣וֹרַשְׁתִּ֔י הָיָ֣ה נִבָּ֔א בִּ/ימֵ֖י חִזְקִיָּ֣הוּ מֶֽלֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה וַ/יֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל כָּל עַם֩ יְהוּדָ֨ה לֵ/אמֹ֜ר כֹּֽה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֗וֹת צִיּ֞וֹן שָׂדֶ֤ה תֵֽחָרֵשׁ֙ וִ/ירוּשָׁלַ֨יִם֙ עִיִּ֣ים תִּֽהְיֶ֔ה וְ/הַ֥ר הַ/בַּ֖יִת לְ/בָמ֥וֹת יָֽעַר
26:19 Numquid morte condemnavit eum Ezechias rex Juda, et omnis Juda ? numquid non timuerunt Dominum, et deprecati sunt faciem Domini, et poenituit Dominum mali quod locutus fuerat adversum eos ? Itaque nos facimus malum grande contra animas nostras.
Did Ezechias king of Juda, and all Juda, condemn him to death? did they not fear the Lord, and beseech the face of the Lord: and the Lord repented of the evil that he had spoken against them? therefore we are doing a great evil against our souls.
33_19 Μὴ ἀνελὼν ἀνεῖλεν αὐτὸν Ἐζεκίας καὶ πᾶς Ἰούδα; οὐχ ὅτι ἐφοβήθησαν τὸν Κύριον, καὶ ὅτι ἐδεήθησαν τοῦ προσώπου Κυρίου, καὶ ἐπαύσατο Κύριος ἀπὸ τῶν κακῶν ὧν ἐλάλησεν ἐπʼ αὐτούς; καὶ ἡμεῖς ἐποιήσαμεν κακὰ μεγάλα ἐπὶ ψυχὰς ἡμῶν.

26:20 Fuit quoque vir prophetans in nomine Domini, Urias filius Semei de Cariathiarim, et prophetavit adversus civitatem istam, et adversus terram hanc, juxta omnia verba Jeremiae.
*H There was also a man that prophesied in the name of the Lord, Urias the son of Semei of Cariathiarim: and he prophesied against this city, and against this land, according to all the words of Jeremias.
Ver. 20. There was. The adversaries make this reply, or the others contrast the conduct of Joakim with the piety of Ezechias.
33_20 Καὶ ἄνθρωπος ἦν προφητεύων τῷ ὀνόματι Κυρίου, Οὐρίας υἱὸς Σαμαίου ἐκ Καριαθιαρὶμ, καὶ ἐπροφήτευσε περὶ τῆς γῆς ταύτης κατὰ πάντας τοὺς λόγους Ἱερεμίου.
וְ/גַם אִ֗ישׁ הָיָ֤ה מִתְנַבֵּא֙ בְּ/שֵׁ֣ם יְהוָ֔ה אֽוּרִיָּ֨הוּ֙ בֶּֽן שְׁמַעְיָ֔הוּ מִ/קִּרְיַ֖ת הַיְּעָרִ֑ים וַ/יִּנָּבֵ֞א עַל הָ/עִ֤יר הַ/זֹּאת֙ וְ/עַל הָ/אָ֣רֶץ הַ/זֹּ֔את כְּ/כֹ֖ל דִּבְרֵ֥י יִרְמְיָֽהוּ
26:21 Et audivit rex Joakim, et omnes potentes et principes ejus, verba haec, et quaesivit rex interficere eum : et audivit Urias, et timuit, fugitque, et ingressus est Aegyptum.
And Joakim, and all his men in power, and his princes heard these words: and the king sought to put him to death. And Urias heard it, and was afraid, and fled and went into Egypt.
33_21 Καὶ ἤκουσεν ὁ βασιλεὺς Ἰωακεὶμ καὶ πάντες οἱ ἄρχοντες πάντας τοὺς λόγους αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἐζήτουν ἀποκτεῖναι αὐτόν· καὶ ἤκουσεν Οὐρίας, καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς Αἴγυπτον.
וַ/יִּשְׁמַ֣ע הַ/מֶּֽלֶךְ יְ֠הוֹיָקִים וְ/כָל גִּבּוֹרָ֤י/ו וְ/כָל הַ/שָּׂרִים֙ אֶת דְּבָרָ֔י/ו וַ/יְבַקֵּ֥שׁ הַ/מֶּ֖לֶךְ הֲמִית֑/וֹ וַ/יִּשְׁמַ֤ע אוּרִיָּ֨הוּ֙ וַ/יִּרָ֔א וַ/יִּבְרַ֖ח וַ/יָּבֹ֥א מִצְרָֽיִם
26:22 Et misit rex Joakim viros in Aegyptum, Elnathan filium Achobor, et viros cum eo, in Aegyptum,
And king Joakim sent men into Egypt, Elnathan the son of Achobor, and men with him into Egypt.
33_22 Καὶ ἐξαπέστειλεν ὁ βασιλεὺς ἄνδρας εἰς Αἴγυπτον,
וַ/יִּשְׁלַ֞ח הַ/מֶּ֧לֶךְ יְהוֹיָקִ֛ים אֲנָשִׁ֖ים מִצְרָ֑יִם אֵ֣ת אֶלְנָתָ֧ן בֶּן עַכְבּ֛וֹר וַ/אֲנָשִׁ֥ים אִתּ֖/וֹ אֶל מִצְרָֽיִם
26:23 et eduxerunt Uriam de Aegypto, et adduxerunt eum ad regem Joakim, et percussit eum gladio, et projecit cadaver ejus in sepulchris vulgi ignobilis.
*H And they brought Urias out of Egypt: and brought him to king Joakim, and he slew him with the sword: and he cast his dead body into the graves of the common people.
Ver. 23. Egypt, as a seditious person...Joakim was tributary to Pharao.
33_23 καὶ ἐξηγάγοσαν αὐτὸν ἐκεῖθεν, καὶ εἰσηγάγοσαν αὐτὸν πρὸς τὸν βασιλέα, καὶ ἐπάταξεν αὐτὸν ἐν μαχαίρᾳ, καὶ ἔῤῥιψεν αὐτὸν εἰς τὸ μνῆμα υἱῶν λαοῦ αὐτοῦ.
וַ/יּוֹצִ֨יאוּ אֶת אוּרִיָּ֜הוּ מִ/מִּצְרַ֗יִם וַ/יְבִאֻ֨/הוּ֙ אֶל הַ/מֶּ֣לֶךְ יְהוֹיָקִ֔ים וַ/יַּכֵּ֖/הוּ בֶּ/חָ֑רֶב וַ/יַּשְׁלֵךְ֙ אֶת נִבְלָת֔/וֹ אֶל קִבְרֵ֖י בְּנֵ֥י הָ/עָֽם
26:24 Igitur manus Ahicam filii Saphan fuit cum Jeremia, ut non traderetur in manus populi, et interficerent eum.
*H So the hand of Ahicam the son of Saphan was with Jeremias, that he should not be delivered into the hands of the people, to put him to death.
Ver. 24. Ahicam. A man employed under Josias, (4 K. xxii. 12.) and father of Godolias, who was also the protector of Jeremias. C. xxxix. 14. and 4 K. xxv. 22. C.
33_24 Πλὴν χεὶρ Ἀχεικὰμ υἱοῦ Σαφὰν ἦν μετὰ Ἱερεμίου, τοῦ μὴ παραδοῦναι αὐτὸν εἰς χεῖρας τοῦ λαοῦ, μὴ ἀνελεῖν αὐτόν.
אַ֗ךְ יַ֚ד אֲחִיקָ֣ם בֶּן שָׁפָ֔ן הָיְתָ֖ה אֶֽת יִרְמְיָ֑הוּ לְ/בִלְתִּ֛י תֵּת אֹת֥/וֹ בְ/יַד הָ/עָ֖ם לַ/הֲמִיתֽ/וֹ
