15:2 [Fili hominis, quid fiet de ligno vitis, ex omnibus lignis nemorum quae sunt inter ligna silvarum ?
*H Son of man, what shall be made of the wood of the vine, out of all the trees of the woods that are among the trees of the forests?
Ver. 2. Wood. Small branches or tendrils. The vines of that country were probably small. C. — The wild vine (Sanct.) grows very large, and the wood is durable, so that statues, pillars, and ladders were formed of it. Pliny xiv. 1. — Strabo (ii. and xi.) mentions the trunk of a vine which two men could hardly clasp, and the bunch of grapes was two cubits high. But the prophet speaks of the small branches, which are fit only for the fire. C. — God's Church is often compared to a vine on account of its fruit, and the branches separated from her resemble the useless cuttings. S. Aug. tr. lxxxi. in Jo. W. — See Ward's Tree of Life, where this is set in a very striking light. In every age the Church makes fresh conquests, while heretics leave and persecute her. H.
Καὶ σὺ υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου, τί ἂν γένοιτο τὸ ξύλον τῆς ἀμπέλου ἐκ πάντων τῶν ξύλων τῶν κλημάτων τῶν ὄντων ἐν τοῖς ξύλοις τοῦ δρυμοῦ;
בֶּן אָדָ֕ם מַה יִּֽהְיֶ֥ה עֵץ הַ/גֶּ֖פֶן מִ/כָּל עֵ֑ץ הַ/זְּמוֹרָ֕ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָיָ֖ה בַּ/עֲצֵ֥י הַ/יָּֽעַר
15:3 numquid tolletur de ea lignum ut fiat opus, aut fabricabitur de ea paxillus ut dependeat in eo quodcumque vas ?
*H Shall wood be taken of it, to do any work, or shall a pin be made of it for any vessel to hang thereon?

Εἰ λήψονται ἐξ αὐτῆς ξύλον τοῦ ποιῆσαι εἰς ἐργασίαν; εἰ λήψονται ἐξ αὐτῆς πάσσαλον τοῦ κρεμᾶσαι ἐπʼ αὐτὸν πᾶν σκεῦος;
הֲ/יֻקַּ֤ח מִמֶּ֨/נּוּ֙ עֵ֔ץ לַ/עֲשׂ֖וֹת לִ/מְלָאכָ֑ה אִם יִקְח֤וּ מִמֶּ֨/נּוּ֙ יָתֵ֔ד לִ/תְל֥וֹת עָלָ֖י/ו כָּל כֶּֽלִי
15:4 Ecce igni datum est in escam : utramque partem ejus consumpsit ignis, et medietas ejus redacta est in favillam : numquid utile erit ad opus ?
*H Behold it is cast into the fire for fuel: the fire hath consumed both ends thereof, and the midst thereof is reduced to ashes: shall it be useful for any work?
Ver. 4. Ashes. It is not even solid enough for fuel. C. — When a faggot is consumed in the middle, the ends are also put into the fire; so not one shall escape who dies out of the Church. W. — The wicked Jews shall surely suffer. v. 6. H.
Πάρεξ ὃ πυρὶ δέδοται εἰς ἀναλωσιν, τὴν κατʼ ἐνιαυτὸν κάθαρσιν ἀπʼ αὐτῆς ἀναλίσκει τὸ πῦρ, καὶ ἐκλείπει εἰς τέλος· μὴ χρήσιμον ἔσται εἰς ἐργασίαν;
הִנֵּ֥ה לָ/אֵ֖שׁ נִתַּ֣ן לְ/אָכְלָ֑ה אֵת֩ שְׁנֵ֨י קְצוֹתָ֜י/ו אָכְלָ֤ה הָ/אֵשׁ֙ וְ/תוֹכ֣/וֹ נָחָ֔ר הֲ/יִצְלַ֖ח לִ/מְלָאכָֽה
15:5 Etiam cum esset integrum, non erat aptum ad opus : quanto magis cum illud ignis devoraverit et combusserit, nihil ex eo fiet operis ?
Even when it was whole it was not fit for work: how much less, when the fire hath devoured and consumed it, shall any work be made of it?
Οὐδὲ ἔτι αὐτοῦ ὄντος ὁλοκλήρου οὐκ ἔσται εἰς ἐργασίαν; μὴ ὅτι ἐὰν καὶ πῦρ αὐτὸ ἀναλώσῃ εἰς τέλος, εἰ ἔτι ἔσται εἰς ἐργασίαν.
הִנֵּה֙ בִּֽ/הְיוֹת֣/וֹ תָמִ֔ים לֹ֥א יֵֽעָשֶׂ֖ה לִ/מְלָאכָ֑ה אַ֣ף כִּי אֵ֤שׁ אֲכָלַ֨תְ/הוּ֙ וַ/יֵּחָ֔ר וְ/נַעֲשָׂ֥ה ע֖וֹד לִ/מְלָאכָֽה
15:6 Propterea haec dicit Dominus Deus : Quomodo lignum vitis inter ligna silvarum, quod dedi igni ad devorandum, sic tradam habitatores Jerusalem.
Therefore thus saith the Lord God: As the vine tree among the trees of the forests which I have given to the fire to be consumed, so will I deliver up the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
'Διὰ τοῦτο εἰπὸν,
לָ/כֵ֗ן כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣/י יְהוִ֔ה כַּ/אֲשֶׁ֤ר עֵץ הַ/גֶּ֨פֶן֙ בְּ/עֵ֣ץ הַ/יַּ֔עַר אֲשֶׁר נְתַתִּ֥י/ו לָ/אֵ֖שׁ לְ/אָכְלָ֑ה כֵּ֣ן נָתַ֔תִּי אֶת יֹשְׁבֵ֖י יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם
15:7 Et ponam faciem meam in eos : de igne egredientur, et ignis consumet eos : et scietis quia ego Dominus, cum posuero faciem meam in eos,
*H And I will set my face against them: they shall go out from fire, and fire shall consume them: and you shall know that I am the Lord, when I shall have set my face against them.
Ver. 7. From fire. If they escape one misery they shall fall into another, as the event shewed. C. — They shall be thrown back into the fire. M.
Καὶ δώσω τὸ πρόσωπόν μου ἐπʼ αὐτούς· ἐκ τοῦ πυρὸς ἐξελεύσονται, καὶ πῦρ αὐτοὺς καταφάγεται, καὶ ἐπιγνώσονται ὅτι ἐγὼ Κύριος ἐν τῷ στηρίσαι με τὸ πρόσωπόν μου ἐπʼ αὐτούς.
וְ/נָתַתִּ֤י אֶת פָּנַ/י֙ בָּ/הֶ֔ם מֵ/הָ/אֵ֣שׁ יָצָ֔אוּ וְ/הָ/אֵ֖שׁ תֹּֽאכְלֵ֑/ם וִֽ/ידַעְתֶּם֙ כִּֽי אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֔ה בְּ/שׂוּמִ֥/י אֶת פָּנַ֖/י בָּ/הֶֽם
15:8 et dedero terram inviam et desolatam, eo quod praevaricatores extiterint, dicit Dominus Deus.]
And I shall have made their land a wilderness, and desolate, because they have been transgressors, saith the Lord God.
Καὶ δώσω τὴν γῆν εἰς ἀφανισμὸν, ἀνθʼ ὧν παρέπεσον παραπτώματι, λέγει Κύριος.
וְ/נָתַתִּ֥י אֶת הָ/אָ֖רֶץ שְׁמָמָ֑ה יַ֚עַן מָ֣עֲלוּ מַ֔עַל נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥/י יְהוִֽה
