Ver. 1. Princes: sons of Josias, who were so wretched. The latter part of this beautiful canticle, or allegory, (v. 10.) regards Sedecias. C.
Καὶ σὺ λάβε θρῆνον ἐπὶ τὸν ἄρχοντα τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ,
וְ/אַתָּה֙ שָׂ֣א קִינָ֔ה אֶל נְשִׂיאֵ֖י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל
19:2 et dices : [Quare mater tua leaena inter leones cubavit ? in medio leunculorum enutrivit catulos suos ?
*H And say: Why did thy mother the lioness lie down among the lions, and bring up her whelps in the midst of young lions?
Ver. 2. Lioness; Jerusalem (Ch.) which made alliances with the lions, or nations. C.
καὶ ἐρεῖς, τί ἡ μήτηρ σου σκύμνος ἐν μέσῳ λεόντων ἐγενήθη; ἐν μέσῳ λεόντων ἐπλήθυεν σκύμνους αὐτῆς.

19:3 Et eduxit unum de leunculis suis, et leo factus est : et didicit capere praedam, hominemque comedere.
*H And she brought out one of her whelps, and he became a lion: and he learned to catch the prey, and to devour men.
Ver. 3. Whelps; Joachaz, or Sellum, (Ch.) who reigned only three months, like his brother Jechonias. H. — The four last kings were all cruel. W.
Καὶ ἀπεπήδησεν εἷς τῶν σκύμνων αὐτῆς, λέων ἐγένετο, καὶ ἔμαθε τοῦ ἁρπάζειν ἁρπάγματα, ἀνθρώπους ἔφαγε.
וַ/תַּ֛עַל אֶחָ֥ד מִ/גֻּרֶ֖י/הָ כְּפִ֣יר הָיָ֑ה וַ/יִּלְמַ֥ד לִ/טְרָף טֶ֖רֶף אָדָ֥ם אָכָֽל
19:4 Et audierunt de eo gentes : et non absque vulneribus suis ceperunt eum, et adduxerunt eum in catenis in terram Aegypti.
*H And the nations heard of him, and took him, but not without receiving wounds: and they brought him in chains into the land of Egypt.
Ver. 4. But. Heb. "he was taken in their pit," (Prot. H.) as also v. 8. Sept. "in his or their corruption." We do not read that Joachaz fought, (C.) though this passage insinuates as much. Sanct. 4 K. xxiii. 30. &c.
Καὶ ἤκουσαν κατʼ αὐτοῦ ἔθνη, ἐν τῇ διαφθορᾷ αὐτῶν συνελήφθη, καὶ ἤγαγον αὐτὸν ἐν κημῷ εἰς γῆν Αἰγύπτου.

19:5 Quae cum vidisset quoniam infirmata est, et periit exspectatio ejus, tulit unum de leunculis suis ; leonem constituit eum.
*H But she seeing herself weakened, and that her hope was lost, took one of her young lions, and set him up for a lion.
Ver. 5. Lions: Joakim. Ch. — He reigned eleven years; but was such a monster, that the prophet does not speak of him or bewail his fate. 4 K. xxiii. 34. Jer. xxii. 19. His words are applicable to Jechonias alone; who was cruel, and banished to Babylon. v. 8. C.
Καὶ εἶδεν ὅτι ἀπῶσται ἀπʼ αὐτῆς, ἀπώλετο ἡ ὑπόστασις αὐτῆς· καὶ ἔλαβεν ἄλλον ἐκ τῶν σκύμνων αὐτῆς· λέοντα ἔταξεν αὐτὸν.

19:7 didicit viduas facere, et civitates earum in desertum adducere : et desolata est terra et plenitudo ejus a voce rugitus illius.
He learned to make widows, and to lay waste their cities: and the land became desolate, and the fulness thereof by the noise of his roaring.
καὶ ἐνέμετο τῷ θράσει αὐτοῦ, καὶ τὰς πόλεις αὐτῶν ἐξηρήμωσε, καὶ ἠφάνισε γῆν, καὶ τὸ πλήρωμα αὐτῆς ἀπὸ φωνῆς ὠρυώματος αὐτοῦ.
וַ/יֵּ֨דַע֙ אַלְמְנוֹתָ֔י/ו וְ/עָרֵי/הֶ֖ם הֶחֱרִ֑יב וַ/תֵּ֤שַׁם אֶ֨רֶץ֙ וּ/מְלֹאָ֔/הּ מִ/קּ֖וֹל שַׁאֲגָתֽ/וֹ
19:8 Et convenerunt adversus eum gentes undique de provinciis, et expanderunt super eum rete suum : in vulneribus earum captus est,
*H And the nations came together against him on every side out of the provinces, and they spread their net over him, in their wounds he was taken.
Ver. 8. Nations: rovers of Chaldea, Syria, &c. 4 K. xxiv. 2. W. — Wounds. Heb. "pit." He was besieged, (4 K. xxiv. 11. C.) and gave himself up. H.
Καὶ ἔδωκαν ἐπʼ αὐτὸν ἔθνη ἐκ χωρῶν κυκλόθεν, καὶ ἐξεπέτασαν ἐπʼ αὐτὸν δίκτυα αὐτῶν, ἐν διαφθορᾷ αὐτῶν συνελήφθη·

And they put him into a cage, they brought him in chains to the king of Babylon: and they cast him into prison, that his voice should no more be heard upon the mountains of Israel.
Καὶ ἔθεντο αὐτὸν ἐν κημῷ καὶ ἐν γαλεάγρᾳ, ἦλθε πρὸς βασιλέα Βαβυλῶνος, καὶ εἰσήγαγεν αὐτὸν εἰς φυλακὴν, ὅπως μὴ ἀκουσθῇ ἡ φωνὴ αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὰ ὄρη τοῦ Ἰσραήλ.

19:10 Mater tua quasi vinea in sanguine tuo super aquam plantata est : fructus ejus et frondes ejus creverunt ex aquis multis.
*H Thy mother is like a vine in thy blood planted by the water: her fruit and her branches have grown out of many waters.
Ver. 10. Blood. She has given birth to many kings. M. — The original may be inaccurate, and perhaps should be, "a vine-tree or branch:" (C.) cormoc instead of bedammecha. Sept. read kerimmon, "like a rose-flower," planted, &c. H. — He speaks of Sedecias more obscurely. C. — The kingdom had flourished under David and Solomon. It afterwards lost its splendour under wicked kings, and all the tribes were removed. W.
Ἡ μήτηρ σου ὡς ἄμπελος καὶ ὡς ἄνθος ἐν ῥοᾷ, ἐν ὕδατι πεφυτευμένη, ὁ καρπὸς αὐτῆς καὶ ὁ βλαστὸς αὐτῆς ἐγένετο ἐξ ὕδατος πολλοῦ.
אִמְּ/ךָ֥ כַ/גֶּ֛פֶן בְּ/דָמְ/ךָ֖ עַל מַ֣יִם שְׁתוּלָ֑ה פֹּֽרִיָּה֙ וַֽ/עֲנֵפָ֔ה הָיְתָ֖ה מִ/מַּ֥יִם רַבִּֽים
19:11 Et factae sunt ei virgae solidae in sceptra dominantium, et exaltata est statura ejus inter frondes, et vidit altitudinem suam in multitudine palmitum suorum.
*H And she hath strong rods to make sceptres for them that bear rule, and her stature was exalted among the branches: and she saw her height in the multitude of her branches.
Ver. 11. Rods. The king had many children, and confided in them, but they were slain.
Καὶ ἐγένετο αὕτη ῥάβδος ἐπὶ φυλὴν ἡγουμένων, καὶ ὑψώθη τῷ μεγέθει αὐτῆς ἐν μέσῳ στελεχῶν· καὶ εἶδε τὸ μέγεθος αὐτῆς ἐν πλήθει κλημάτων αὐτῆς.
וַ/יִּֽהְיוּ לָ֞/הּ מַטּ֣וֹת עֹ֗ז אֶל שִׁבְטֵי֙ מֹֽשְׁלִ֔ים וַ/תִּגְבַּ֥הּ קֽוֹמָת֖/וֹ עַל בֵּ֣ין עֲבֹתִ֑ים וַ/יֵּרָ֣א בְ/גָבְה֔/וֹ בְּ/רֹ֖ב דָּלִיֹּתָֽי/ו
19:12 Et evulsa est in ira, in terramque projecta, et ventus urens siccavit fructum ejus : marcuerunt et arefactae sunt virgae roboris ejus : ignis comedit eam.

Because he shall make a separation between brothers: the Lord will bring a burning wind that shall rise from the desert, and it shall dry up his springs, and shall make his fountain desolate, and he shall carry off the treasure of every desirable vessel.
But she was plucked up in wrath, and cast on the ground, and the burning wind dried up her fruit: her strong rods are withered, and dried up: the fire hath devoured her.
Καὶ κατεκλάσθη ἐν θυμῷ, ἐπὶ γῆν ἐῤῥίφη, καὶ ἄνεμος ὁ καύσων ἐξήρανε τὰ ἐκλεκτὰ αὐτῆς· ἐξεδικήθησαν, καὶ ἐξηράνθη ἡ ῥάβδος ἰσχύος αὐτῆς· πῦρ ἀνήλωσεν αὐτήν.
וַ/תֻּתַּ֤שׁ בְּ/חֵמָה֙ לָ/אָ֣רֶץ הֻשְׁלָ֔כָה וְ/ר֥וּחַ הַ/קָּדִ֖ים הוֹבִ֣ישׁ פִּרְיָ֑/הּ הִתְפָּרְק֧וּ וְ/יָבֵ֛שׁוּ מַטֵּ֥ה עֻזָּ֖/הּ אֵ֥שׁ אֲכָלָֽתְ/הוּ
19:13 Et nunc transplantata est in desertum, in terra invia et sitienti.
*H And now she is transplanted into the desert, in a land not passable, and dry.
Ver. 13. Dry; unfit for vine-trees. He speaks of the prison of Babylon. C. — The country was naturally wet. H.
Καὶ νῦν πεφύτευκαν αὐτὴν ἐν τῇ ἠρημῳ, ἐν γῇ ἀνύδρῳ.
וְ/עַתָּ֖ה שְׁתוּלָ֣ה בַ/מִּדְבָּ֑ר בְּ/אֶ֖רֶץ צִיָּ֥ה וְ/צָמָֽא
19:14 Et egressus est ignis de virga ramorum ejus, qui fructum ejus comedit : et non fuit in ea virga fortis, sceptrum dominantium.] Planctus est, et erit in planctum.
*H And a fire is gone out from a rod of her branches, which hath devoured her fruit: so that she now hath no strong rod, to be a sceptre of rulers. This is a lamentation, and it shall be for a lamentation.
Ver. 14. Fire. Ismael, who slew Godolias, was of the royal family. Jer. xli. &c. C.
Καὶ ἐξῆλθε πῦρ ἐκ ῥάβδου ἐκλεκτῶν αὐτῆς, καὶ κατέφαγεν αὐτὴν, καὶ οὐκ ἦν ἐν αὐτῇ ῥάβδος ἰσχύος· φυλὴ εἰς παραβολὴν θρήνου ἐστὶ, καὶ ἐσται εἰς θρῆνον.
