36:1 Tu autem, fili hominis, propheta super montes Israel, et dices : [Montes Israel, audite verbum Domini.
*H And thou son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel, and say: Ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord:
Ver. 1. Israel. The restoration of the Jews and the redemption of Christ, constitute this fourth division. W. — Edom has seized parts of the country, as if I had abandoned my people for ever.

36:2 Haec dicit Dominus Deus : Eo quod dixerit inimicus de vobis : Euge, altitudines sempiternae in haereditatem datae sunt nobis :
*H Thus saith the Lord God: Because the enemy hath said to you: Aha, the everlasting heights are given to us for an inheritance.
Ver. 2. Heights. Sept. "deserts." The mountains are often styled eternal, as being the best symbols of durability. Deut. xxxiii. 15.

*H Therefore prophesy, and say: Thus saith the Lord God: Because you have been desolate, and trodden under foot on every side, and made an inheritance to the rest of the nations, and are become the subject of the talk, and the reproach of the people:

36:4 propterea, montes Israel, audite verbum Domini Dei. Haec dicit Dominus Deus montibus et collibus, torrentibus, vallibusque et desertis, parietinis et urbibus derelictis, quae depopulatae sunt et subsannatae a reliquis gentibus per circuitum.
Therefore, ye mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord God: Thus saith the Lord God to the mountains, and to the hills, to the brooks, and to the valleys, and to desolate places, and ruinous walls, and to the cities that are forsaken, that are spoiled, and derided by the rest of the nations round about.

36:5 Propterea haec dicit Dominus Deus : Quoniam in igne zeli mei locutus sum de reliquis gentibus, et de Idumaea universa, quae dederunt terram meam sibi in haereditatem cum gaudio, et toto corde et ex animo, et ejecerunt eam ut vastarent :
Therefore thus saith the Lord God: In the fire of my zeal I have spoken of the rest of the nations, and of all Edom, who have taken my land to themselves, for an inheritance with joy, and with all the heart, and with the mind: and have cast it out to lay it waste.

36:6 idcirco vaticinare super humum Israel, et dices montibus et collibus, jugis et vallibus : Haec dicit Dominus Deus : Ecce ego in zelo meo et in furore meo locutus sum, eo quod confusionem gentium sustinueritis.
Prophesy therefore concerning the land of Israel, and say to the mountains, and to the hills, to the ridges, and to the valleys: Thus saith the Lord God: Behold I have spoken in my zeal, and in my indignation, because you have borne the shame of the Gentiles.

36:7 Idcirco haec dicit Dominus Deus : Ego levavi manum meam, ut gentes quae in circuitu vestro sunt, ipsae confusionem suam portent.
Therefore thus saith the Lord God: I have lifted up my hand, that the Gentiles who are round about you, shall themselves bear their shame.

36:8 Vos autem, montes Israel, ramos vestros germinetis, et fructum vestrum afferatis populo meo Israel : prope enim est ut veniat.
*H But as for you, O mountains of Israel, shoot ye forth your branches, and yield your fruit to my people of Israel: for they are at hand to come.
Ver. 8. Israel. Some apply what follows to the captives returning; others, perceiving that the expressions were not then literally verified, have recourse to the reign of 1000 years. Others again explain the whole of Christ's Church. But some expressions refer to it, and others to the captives; which, though mixed together, induce no confusion, as what belongs to the Jews was a figure of what regarded Christ; and the predictions of the Messias might be applied to the Jews in an hyperbolical sense. 36:9 Quia ecce ego ad vos, et convertar ad vos : et arabimini, et accipietis sementem.
For I, I am for you, and I will turn to you, and you shall be ploughed and sown.
Ὅτι ἰδοὺ ἐγὼ ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς, καὶ ἐπιβλέψω ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς, καὶ κατεργασθήσεσθε, καὶ σπαρήσεσθε,
כִּ֖י הִנְ/נִ֣י אֲלֵי/כֶ֑ם וּ/פָנִ֣יתִי אֲלֵי/כֶ֔ם וְ/נֶעֱבַדְתֶּ֖ם וְ/נִזְרַעְתֶּֽם
36:10 Et multiplicabo in vobis homines, omnemque domum Israel : et habitabuntur civitates, et ruinosa instaurabuntur.
And I will multiply men upon you, and all the house of Israel: and the cities ball be inhabited, and the ruinous places shall be repaired.
καὶ πληθυνῶ ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς ἀνθρώπους, πᾶν οἶκον Ἰσραὴλ εἰς τέλος, καὶ κατοικηθήσονται αἱ πόλεις, καὶ ἡ ἠρημωμένη οἰκοδομηθήσεται.
וְ/הִרְבֵּיתִ֤י עֲלֵי/כֶם֙ אָדָ֔ם כָּל בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל כֻּלֹּ֑/ה וְ/נֹֽשְׁבוּ֙ הֶֽ/עָרִ֔ים וְ/הֶ/חֳרָב֖וֹת תִּבָּנֶֽינָה
36:11 Et replebo vos hominibus et jumentis, et multiplicabuntur, et crescent : et habitare vos faciam sicut a principio, bonisque donabo majoribus quam habuistis ab initio : et scietis quia ego Dominus.
*H And I will make you abound with men and with beasts: and they shall be multiplied, and increased: and I will settle you as from the beginning, and will give you greater gifts, than you had from the beginning: and you shall know that I am the Lord.
Ver. 11. Greater. Sept. "similar." H. — It would be difficult to shew that the Jews arrived at greater eminence after the captivity than before, (C.) though they were less addicted to idolatry. Their kingdom was not independent: they had no prophets, &c. But the superior numbers and excellence of the Christian Church is manifest.
Καὶ πληθυνῶ ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς ἀνθρώπους, καὶ κτήνη, καὶ κατοικιῶ ὑμᾶς ὡς τὸ ἐν ἀρχῇ ὑμῶν, καὶ εὖ ποιήσω ὑμᾶς, ὥσπερ τὰ ἔμπροσθεν ὑμῶν, καὶ γνώσεσθε ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι Κύριος.

36:12 Et adducam super vos homines, populum meum Israel, et haereditate possidebunt te : et eris eis in haereditatem, et non addes ultra ut absque eis sis.
*H And I will bring men upon you, my people Israel, and they shall possess thee for their inheritance: and thou shalt be their inheritance, and shalt no more henceforth be without them.
Ver. 12. Them. Antiochus and the Romans laid waste the country; (C.) and Adrian would not allow the Jews to come near Jerusalem. S. Jer. Eus. iv. 6. — The people were not indeed removed together, as they had been. But all this is verified only in the Church, which in the midst of persecutions always subsists. Theodoret thinks these promises were conditional with regard to the Jews.

36:13 Haec dicit Dominus Deus : Pro eo quod dicunt de vobis : Devoratrix hominum es, et suffocans gentem tuam :
*H Thus saith the Lord God: Because thy say of you: Thou art a devourer of men, and one that suffocatest thy nation:
Ver. 13. Men. This remark was very ancient. Num. xiii. 33. Wars had almost always raged in the country. C.
Τάδε λέγει Κύριος Κύριος, ἀνθʼ ὧν εἶπάν σοι, κατέσθουσα ἀνθρώπους εἶ, καὶ ἠτεκνωμένη ὑπὸ τοῦ ἔθνους σου ἐγένου·

36:14 propterea homines non comedes amplius, et gentem tuam non necabis ultra, ait Dominus Deus.
Therefore thou shalt devour men no more nor destroy thy nation any more, saith the Lord God.
Διατοῦτο ἀνθρώπους οὐκέτι φάγεσαι, καὶ τὸ ἔθνος σου οὐκ ἀτεκνώσεις ἔτι, λέγει Κύριος Κύριος.
לָ/כֵ֗ן אָדָם֙ לֹא תֹ֣אכְלִי ע֔וֹד ו/גוי/ך וְ/גוֹיַ֖יִ/ךְ לֹ֣א תכשלי תְשַׁכְּלִי ע֑וֹד נְאֻ֖ם אֲדֹנָ֥/י יְהוִֽה
36:15 Nec auditam faciam in te amplius confusionem gentium, et opprobrium populorum nequaquam portabis : et gentem tuam non amittes amplius, ait Dominus Deus.]
*H Neither will I cause men to hear in thee the shame of the nations any more, nor shalt thou bear the reproach of the people, nor lose thy nation any more, saith the Lord God.
Ver. 15. More. This whole promise principally relates to the Church of Christ, and God's perpetual protection of her; for as to the carnal Jews, they have been removed out of their land these sixteen hundred years. Ch.

36:16 Et factum est verbum Domini ad me, dicens :
And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:

וַ/יְהִ֥י דְבַר יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥/י לֵ/אמֹֽר
36:17 [Fili hominis, domus Israel habitaverunt in humo sua, et polluerunt eam in viis suis et in studiis suis : juxta immunditiam menstruatae facta est via eorum coram me.
Son of man, when the house of Israel dwelt in their own land, they defiled it with their ways, and with their doings: their way was before me like the uncleanness of a menstruous woman.
υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου, οἶκος Ἰσραὴλ κατῴκησεν ἐπὶ τῆς γῆς αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐμίαναν αὐτὴν ἐν τῇ ὁδῷ αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐν τοῖς εἰδώλοις αὐτῶν, καὶ ἐν ταῖς ἀκαθαρσίαις αὐτῶν, καὶ κατὰ τὴν ἀκαθαρσίαν τῆς ἀποκαθημένης ἐγενήθη ἡ ὁδὸς αὐτῶν πρὸ προσώπου μου.

36:18 Et effudi indignationem meam super eos pro sanguine quem fuderunt super terram, et in idolis suis polluerunt eam.
*H And I poured out my indignation upon them for the blood which they had shed upon the land, and with their idols they defiled it.

And I scattered them among the nations, and they are dispersed through the countries: I have judged them according to their ways, and their devices.
καὶ διέσπειρα αὐτοὺς εἰς τὰ ἔθνη, καὶ ἐλίκμησα αὐτοὺς εἰς τὰς χώρας, κατὰ τὴν ὁδὸν αὐτῶν, καὶ κατὰ τὴν ἁμαρτίαν αὐτῶν ἔκρινα αὐτούς.

36:20 Et ingressi sunt ad gentes ad quas introierunt : et polluerunt nomen sanctum meum, cum diceretur de eis : Populus Domini iste est, et de terra ejus egressi sunt.

Ver. 20. Land. Yet their conduct was no better than that of infidels. Thus they throw the blame on the law, and upon God himself. Jer. xlviii. 9. &c. C. — The Jews had provoked God to punish them with captivity; and hence the nations took occasion to blaspheme, that he could not protect them. W.
Καὶ εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὰ ἔθνη, οὗ εἰσῆλθον ἐκεῖ, καὶ ἐβεβήλωσαν τὸ ὄνομά μου τὸ ἅγιον ἐν τῷ λέγεσθαι αὐτοὺς, λαὸς Κυρίου οὗτοι, καὶ ἐκ τῆς γῆς αὐτοῦ ἐξεληλύθασι.

Whether Immersion in Water Is Necessary for Baptism?
Objection 1: It seems that immersion in water is necessary for Baptism. Because it is written (Eph. 4:5): "One faith, one baptism." But in many parts of the world the ordinary way of baptizing is by immersion. Therefore it seems that there can be no Baptism without immersion.
Obj. 2: Further, the Apostle says (Rom. 6:3, 4): "All we who are baptized in Christ Jesus, are baptized in His death: for we are buried together with Him, by Baptism into death." But this is done by immersion: for Chrysostom says on John 3:5: "Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost," etc.: "When we dip our heads under the water as in a kind of tomb, our old man is buried, and being submerged, is hidden below, and thence he rises again renewed." Therefore it seems that immersion is essential to Baptism.
Obj. 3: Further, if Baptism is valid without total immersion of the body, it would follow that it would be equally sufficient to pour water over any part of the body. But this seems unreasonable; since original sin, to remedy which is the principal purpose of Baptism, is not in only one part of the body. Therefore it seems that immersion is necessary for Baptism, and that mere sprinkling is not enough.
_On the contrary,_ It is written (Heb. 10:22): "Let us draw near with a true heart in fulness of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with clean water."
_I answer that,_ In the sacrament of Baptism water is put to the use of a washing of the body, whereby to signify the inward washing away of sins. Now washing may be done with water not only by immersion, but also by sprinkling or pouring. And, therefore, although it is safer to baptize by immersion, because this is the more ordinary fashion, yet Baptism can be conferred by sprinkling or also by pouring, according to Ezech. 36:25: "I will pour upon you clean water," as also the Blessed Lawrence is related to have baptized. And this especially in cases of urgency: either because there is a great number to be baptized, as was clearly the case in Acts 2 and 4, where we read that on one day three thousand believed, and on another five thousand: or through there being but a small supply of water, or through feebleness of the minister, who cannot hold up the candidate for Baptism; or through feebleness of the candidate, whose life might be endangered by immersion. We must therefore conclude that immersion is not necessary for Baptism.
Reply Obj. 1: What is accidental to a thing does not diversify its essence. Now bodily washing with water is essential to Baptism: wherefore Baptism is called a "laver," according to Eph. 5:26: "Cleansing it by the laver of water in the word of life." But that the washing be done this or that way, is accidental to Baptism. And consequently such diversity does not destroy the oneness of Baptism.
Reply Obj. 2: Christ's burial is more clearly represented by immersion: wherefore this manner of baptizing is more frequently in use and more commendable. Yet in the other ways of baptizing it is represented after a fashion, albeit not so clearly; for no matter how the washing is done, the body of a man, or some part thereof, is put under water, just as Christ's body was put under the earth.
Reply Obj. 3: The principal part of the body, especially in relation to the exterior members, is the head, wherein all the senses, both interior and exterior, flourish. And therefore, if the whole body cannot be covered with water, because of the scarcity of water, or because of some other reason, it is necessary to pour water over the head, in which the principle of animal life is made manifest.
And although original sin is transmitted through the members that serve for procreation, yet those members are not to be sprinkled in preference to the head, because by Baptism the transmission of original sin to the offspring by the act of procreation is not deleted, but the soul is freed from the stain and debt of sin which it has contracted. Consequently that part of the body should be washed in preference, in which the works of the soul are made manifest.
Nevertheless in the Old Law the remedy against original sin was affixed to the member of procreation; because He through Whom original sin was to be removed, was yet to be born of the seed of Abraham, whose faith was signified by circumcision according to Rom. 4:11. _______________________

Whether All Sins Are Taken Away by Baptism?
Objection 1: It seems that not all sins are taken away by Baptism. For Baptism is a spiritual regeneration, which corresponds to carnal generation. But by carnal generation man contracts none but original sin. Therefore none but original sin is taken away by Baptism.
Obj. 2: Further, Penance is a sufficient cause of the remission of actual sins. But penance is required in adults before Baptism, according to Acts 2:38: "Do penance and be baptized every one of you." Therefore Baptism has nothing to do with the remission of actual sins.
Obj. 3: Further, various diseases demand various remedies: because as Jerome says on Mk. 9:27, 28: "What is a cure for the heel is no cure for the eye." But original sin, which is taken away by Baptism, is generically distinct from actual sin. Therefore not all sins are taken away by Baptism.
_On the contrary,_ It is written (Ezech. 36:25): "I will pour upon you clean water, and you shall be cleansed from all your filthiness."
_I answer that,_ As the Apostle says (Rom. 6:3), "all we, who are baptized in Christ Jesus, are baptized in His death." And further on he concludes (Rom. 6:11): "So do you also reckon that you are dead to sin, but alive unto God in Christ Jesus our Lord." Hence it is clear that by Baptism man dies unto the oldness of sin, and begins to live unto the newness of grace. But every sin belongs to the primitive oldness. Consequently every sin is taken away by Baptism.
Reply Obj. 1: As the Apostle says (Rom. 5:15, 16), the sin of Adam was not so far-reaching as the gift of Christ, which is bestowed in Baptism: "for judgment was by one unto condemnation; but grace is of many offenses, unto justification." Wherefore Augustine says in his book on Infant Baptism (De Pecc. Merit. et Remiss. i), that "in carnal generation, original sin alone is contracted; but when we are born again of the Spirit, not only original sin but also wilful sin is forgiven."
Reply Obj. 2: No sin can be forgiven save by the power of Christ's Passion: hence the Apostle says (Heb. 9:22) that "without shedding of blood there is no remission." Consequently no movement of the human will suffices for the remission of sin, unless there be faith in Christ's Passion, and the purpose of participating in it, either by receiving Baptism, or by submitting to the keys of the Church. Therefore when an adult approaches Baptism, he does indeed receive the forgiveness of all his sins through his purpose of being baptized, but more perfectly through the actual reception of Baptism.
Reply Obj. 3: This argument is true of special remedies. But Baptism operates by the power of Christ's Passion, which is the universal remedy for all sins; and so by Baptism all sins are loosed. _______________________

וְ/יָדְע֣וּ הַ/גּוֹיִ֗ם אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִֽשָּׁאֲרוּ֮ סְבִיבוֹתֵי/כֶם֒ כִּ֣י אֲנִ֣י יְהוָ֗ה בָּנִ֨יתִי֙ הַ/נֶּ֣הֱרָס֔וֹת נָטַ֖עְתִּי הַ/נְּשַׁמָּ֑ה אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה דִּבַּ֥רְתִּי וְ/עָשִֽׂיתִי
36:37 Haec dicit Dominus Deus : Adhuc in hoc invenient me domus Israel, ut faciam eis : multiplicabo eos sicut gregem hominum,
*H Thus saith the Lord God: Moreover in this shall the house of Israel find me, that I will do it for them: I will multiply them as a flock of men,
Ver. 37. Find. Heb. "seek." I will cause great multitudes to come to the solemn feast. This was seen still more after the conversion of the Gentiles. C.
Τάδε λέγει ἀδωναῒ Κύριος, ἔτι τοῦτο ζητηθήσομαι τῷ οἴκῳ Ἰσραὴλ τοῦ ποιῆσαι αὐτούς· πληθυνῶ αὐτοὺς ὡς πρόβατα ἀνθρώπους,
כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣/י יְהוִ֔ה ע֗וֹד זֹ֛את אִדָּרֵ֥שׁ לְ/בֵֽית יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לַ/עֲשׂ֣וֹת לָ/הֶ֑ם אַרְבֶּ֥ה אֹתָ֛/ם כַּ/צֹּ֖אן אָדָֽם
36:38 ut gregem sanctum, ut gregem Jerusalem in solemnitatibus ejus : sic erunt civitates desertae, plenae gregibus hominum : et scient quia ego Dominus.]
As a holy flock, as the flock of Jerusalem in her solemn feasts: so shall the waste cities be full of flocks of men: and they shall know that I am the Lord.
ὡς πρόβατα ἅγια, ὡς πρόβατα Ἱερουσαλὴμ ἐν ταῖς ἑορταῖς αὐτῆς· οὕτως ἔσονται αἱ πόλεις αἱ ἔρημοι πλήρεις προβάτων ἀνθρώπων· καὶ γνώσονται ὅτι ἐγὼ Κύριος.
