35:1 Et factus est sermo Domini ad me, dicens :
And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
Καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου πρὸς μὲ, λέγων,
וַ/יְהִ֥י דְבַר יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥/י לֵ/אמֹֽר
35:2 Fili hominis, pone faciem tuam adversum montem Seir, et prophetabis de eo, et dices illi :
*H Son of man, set thy face against mount Seir, and prophesy concerning it, and say to it:
Ver. 2. Face. Address, or speak without fearing any man. W. — Seir: Idumea. He speaks of its devastation, both by Nabuchodonosor on the side of Moab, and by the Machabees in what remained. Jer. xxvii. 7. and 1 Mac. iv. 60. and xiv. 33. C.
υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου, ἐπίστρεψον τὸ πρόσωπόν σου ἐπʼ ὄρος Σηεὶρ, καὶ προφήτευσον εἰς αὐτὸ,
בֶּן אָדָ֕ם שִׂ֥ים פָּנֶ֖י/ךָ עַל הַ֣ר שֵׂעִ֑יר וְ/הִנָּבֵ֖א עָלָֽי/ו
35:3 [Haec dicit Dominus Deus : Ecce ego ad te, mons Seir : et extendam manum meam super te, et dabo te desolatum atque desertum.
Thus saith the Lord God: Behold I come against thee, mount Seir, and I will stretch forth my hand upon thee, and I will make thee desolate and waste.
'καὶ εἰπὸν αὐτῷ,
וְ/אָמַ֣רְתָּ לּ֗/וֹ כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣/י יְהוִ֔ה הִנְ/נִ֥י אֵלֶ֖י/ךָ הַר שֵׂעִ֑יר וְ/נָטִ֤יתִי יָדִ/י֙ עָלֶ֔י/ךָ וּ/נְתַתִּ֖י/ךָ שְׁמָמָ֥ה וּ/מְשַׁמָּֽה
35:4 Urbes tuas demoliar, et tu desertus eris : et scies quia ego Dominus.
I will destroy thy cities, and thou shalt be desolate: and thou shalt know that I am the Lord.
καὶ ταῖς πόλεσί σου ἐρημίαν ποιήσω, καὶ σὺ ἔρημος ἔσῃ, καὶ γνώσῃ ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι Κύριος.
עָרֶ֨י/ךָ֙ חָרְבָּ֣ה אָשִׂ֔ים וְ/אַתָּ֖ה שְׁמָמָ֣ה תִֽהְיֶ֑ה וְ/יָדַעְתָּ֖ כִּֽי אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה
35:5 Eo quod fueris inimicus sempiternus, et concluseris filios Israel in manus gladii in tempore afflictionis eorum, in tempore iniquitatis extremae :
*H Because thou hast been an everlasting enemy, and hast shut up the children of Israel in the hands of the sword in the time of their affliction, in the time of their last iniquity.
Ver. 5. Enemy. God revenges the injuries done to his Church, as if they were done to himself. Acts ix. 4. W. — The enmity of Jacob and of Esau seemed to commence in the womb, and was increased by the purchase of the birth-right, till Jacob's prudence disarmed his brother. Their descendants sought every opportunity to injure one another. The Idumeans shewed their ill-will particularly, when the Jews were most distressed. This was a piece of the greatest cruelty.
Ἀντὶ τοῦ γενέσθαι σε ἐχθρὰν αἰωνίαν, καὶ ἐνεκάθισας τῷ οἴκῳ Ἰσραὴλ δόλῳ, ἐν χειρὶ ἐχθρῶν μαχαίρᾳ ἐν καιρῷ ἀδικίας, ἐπʼ ἐσχάτων.
יַ֗עַן הֱי֤וֹת לְ/ךָ֙ אֵיבַ֣ת עוֹלָ֔ם וַ/תַּגֵּ֥ר אֶת בְּנֵֽי יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עַל יְדֵי חָ֑רֶב בְּ/עֵ֣ת אֵידָ֔/ם בְּ/עֵ֖ת עֲוֺ֥ן קֵֽץ
35:6 propterea vivo ego, dicit Dominus Deus, quoniam sanguini tradam te, et sanguis te persequetur : et cum sanguinem oderis, sanguis persequetur te.
*H Therefore as I live, saith the Lord God, I will deliver thee up to blood, and blood shall pursue thee: and whereas thou hast hated blood, blood shall pursue thee.
Ver. 6. Blood. The Machabees sprung from the same stock. Pursue the Idumeans, and force them to receive circumcision. 1 Mac. iv. 15.
Διατοῦτο ζῶ ἐγὼ, λέγει Κύριος Κύριος, εἰ μὴν εἰς αἷμα ἥμαρτες, καὶ αἷμα διώξεταί σε.

35:7 Et dabo montem Seir desolatum atque desertum, et auferam de eo euntem et redeuntem.
And I will make mount Seir waste and desolate: and I will take away from it him that goeth and him that returneth.
Καὶ δώσω ὄρος Σηεὶρ εἰς ἔρημον, καὶ ἠρημωμένον, καὶ ἀπολῶ ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ ἀνθρώπους καὶ κτήνη,
וְ/נָֽתַתִּי֙ אֶת הַ֣ר שֵׂעִ֔יר לְ/שִֽׁמְמָ֖ה וּ/שְׁמָמָ֑ה וְ/הִכְרַתִּ֥י מִמֶּ֖/נּוּ עֹבֵ֥ר וָ/שָֽׁב
35:8 Et implebo montes ejus occisorum suorum : in collibus tuis, et in vallibus tuis atque in torrentibus, interfecti gladio cadent.
And I will fill his mountains with his men that are slain: in thy hills, and in thy valleys, and in thy torrents they shall fall that are slain with the sword.
καὶ ἐμπλήσω τῶν τραυματιῶν βουνούς σου καὶ τὰς φάραγγάς σου, καὶ ἐν πᾶσι τοῖς πεδίοις σου τετραυματισμένοι μαχαίρᾳ πεσοῦνται ἐν σοί.
וּ/מִלֵּאתִ֥י אֶת הָרָ֖י/ו חֲלָלָ֑י/ו גִּבְעוֹתֶ֤י/ךָ וְ/גֵאוֹתֶ֨י/ךָ֙ וְ/כָל אֲפִיקֶ֔י/ךָ חַלְלֵי חֶ֖רֶב יִפְּל֥וּ בָ/הֶֽם
35:9 In solitudines sempiternas tradam te, et civitates tuae non habitabuntur : et scietis quia ego Dominus Deus.
*H I will make thee everlasting desolations, and thy cities shall not be inhabited: and thou shalt know that I am the Lord God.
Ver. 9. Inhabited for a considerable time, as C. xxvi. 20.
Ἐρημίαν αἰώνιον θήσομαί σε, καὶ αἱ πόλεις σου οὐ μὴ κατοικηθῶσιν ἔτι, καὶ γνώσῃ ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι Κύριος.
שִֽׁמְמ֤וֹת עוֹלָם֙ אֶתֶּנְ/ךָ֔ וְ/עָרֶ֖י/ךָ לֹ֣א תישבנה תָשֹׁ֑בְנָה וִֽ/ידַעְתֶּ֖ם כִּֽי אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה
35:10 Eo quod dixeris : Duae gentes et duae terrae meae erunt, et haereditate possidebo eas, cum Dominus esset ibi :
*H Because thou hast said: The two nations, and the two lands shall be mine, and I will possess them by inheritance: whereas the Lord was there.
Ver. 10. Two. I will add the country of the Jews to my own, or will possess the land belonging to the kingdoms of Juda and of Israel. Their hopes were blasted. They never occupied any thing belonging to the Israelites, and what they had taken from Juda, as far as Hebron, was recovered. — There, witness of these designs, and guardian of his temple, &c.
Διὰ τὸ εἰπεῖν σε, τὰ δύο ἔθνη, καὶ αἱ δύο χῶραι ἐμαὶ ἔσονται, καὶ κληρονομήσω αὐτὰς, καὶ Κύριος ἐκεῖ ἐστι·
יַ֣עַן אֲ֠מָרְ/ךָ אֶת שְׁנֵ֨י הַ/גּוֹיִ֜ם וְ/אֶת שְׁתֵּ֧י הָ/אֲרָצ֛וֹת לִ֥/י תִהְיֶ֖ינָה וִֽ/ירַשְׁנ֑וּ/הָ וַֽ/יהוָ֖ה שָׁ֥ם הָיָֽה
35:11 propterea vivo ego, dicit Dominus Deus, quia faciam juxta iram tuam, et secundum zelum tuum, quem fecisti odio habens eos : et notus efficiar per eos, cum te judicavero.
*H Therefore as I live, saith the Lord God, I will do according to thy wrath, and according to thy envy, which thou hast exercised in hatred to them: and I will be made known by them, when I shall have judged thee.
Ver. 11. Wrath. The Jews shall treat you as you have threatened to do unto them. — By them, my people. Sept. "to thee."
Διατοῦτο ζῶ ἐγὼ, λέγει Κύριος, καὶ ποιήσω σοι κατὰ τὴν ἔχθραν σου, καὶ γνωσθήσομαί σοι ἡνίκα ἂν κρινῶ σε,
לָ/כֵ֣ן חַי אָ֗נִי נְאֻם֮ אֲדֹנָ֣/י יְהוִה֒ וְ/עָשִׂ֗יתִי כְּ/אַפְּ/ךָ֙ וּ/כְ/קִנְאָ֣תְ/ךָ֔ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשִׂ֔יתָה מִ/שִּׂנְאָתֶ֖י/ךָ בָּ֑/ם וְ/נוֹדַ֥עְתִּי בָ֖/ם כַּ/אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֶשְׁפְּטֶֽ/ךָ
35:12 Et scies quia ego Dominus audivi universa opprobria tua quae locutus es de montibus Israel, dicens : Deserti nobis ad devorandum dati sunt.
And thou shalt know that I the Lord have heard all thy reproaches, that thou hast spoken against the mountains of Israel, saying. They are desolate, they are given to us to consume.
καὶ γνώσῃ ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι Κύριος· ἤκουσα τῆς φωνῆς τῶν βλασφημιῶν σου, ὅτι εἶπας, τὰ ὄρη Ἰσραὴλ ἔρημα ἡμῖν δέδοται εἰς κατάβρωμα,
וְֽ/יָדַעְתָּ֮ כִּֽי אֲנִ֣י יְהוָה֒ שָׁמַ֣עְתִּי אֶת כָּל נָאָֽצוֹתֶ֗י/ךָ אֲשֶׁ֥ר אָמַ֛רְתָּ עַל הָרֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לֵ/אמֹ֣ר שממה שָׁמֵ֑מוּ לָ֥/נוּ נִתְּנ֖וּ לְ/אָכְלָֽה
35:13 Et insurrexistis super me ore vestro, et derogastis adversum me verba vestra : ego audivi.
*H And you rose up against me with your mouth, and have derogated from me by your words: I have heard them.
Ver. 13. Derogated. Sept. "bawled;" or Heb. "multiplied your words against me," as if I could not protect my inheritance. H. — You would pretend to judge me, and to fathom my designs.
καὶ ἐμεγαλοῤῥημόνησας ἐπʼ ἐμὲ τῷ στόματί σου, ἐγὼ ἤκουσα.
וַ/תַּגְדִּ֤ילוּ עָלַ/י֙ בְּ/פִי/כֶ֔ם וְ/הַעְתַּרְתֶּ֥ם עָלַ֖/י דִּבְרֵי/כֶ֑ם אֲנִ֖י שָׁמָֽעְתִּי
35:14 Haec dicit Dominus Deus : Laetante universa terra, in solitudinem te redigam :
*H Thus saith the Lord God: When the whole earth shall rejoice, I will make thee a wilderness.
Ver. 14. Rejoice. After the captivity, the Machabees shall conquer Edom.
Τάδε λέγει Κύριος, ἐν τῇ εὐφροσύνῃ πάσης τῆς γῆς ἔρημον ποιήσω σε.
כֹּ֥ה אָמַ֖ר אֲדֹנָ֣/י יְהוִ֑ה כִּ/שְׂמֹ֨חַ֙ כָּל הָ/אָ֔רֶץ שְׁמָמָ֖ה אֶעֱשֶׂה לָּֽ/ךְ
35:15 sicuti gavisus es super haereditatem domus Israel eo quod fuerit dissipata, sic faciam tibi : dissipatus eris, mons Seir, et Idumaea omnis : et scient quia ego Dominus.]
*H As thou hast rejoiced over the inheritance of the house of Israel, because it was laid waste, so will I do to thee: thou shalt be laid waste, O mount Seir, and all Idumea: and they shall know that I am the Lord.
Ver. 15. As, &c. is not in the Rom. Sept. S. Jerom says it was marked with an asterisk, being taken from Theodotion. C. — Grabe supplies to thou shalt. His copy has the rest:..."thou shalt know that I am their Lord." H.
Ἔρημον ἔσῃ ὄρος Σηεὶρ, καὶ πᾶσα ἡ Ἰδουμαία, καὶ ἐξαναλωθήσεται, καὶ γνώσῃ ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι Κύριος ὁ Θεὸς αὐτῶν.
כְּ/שִׂמְחָ֨תְ/ךָ֜ לְ/נַחְלַ֧ת בֵּֽית יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל עַ֥ל אֲשֶׁר שָׁמֵ֖מָה כֵּ֣ן אֶעֱשֶׂה לָּ֑/ךְ שְׁמָמָ֨ה תִֽהְיֶ֤ה הַר שֵׂעִיר֙ וְ/כָל אֱד֣וֹם כֻּלָּ֔/הּ וְ/יָדְע֖וּ כִּֽי אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה
