17:2 Fili hominis, propone aenigma, et narra parabolam ad domum Israel,

17:3 et dices : Haec dicit Dominus Deus : Aquila grandis magnarum alarum, longo membrorum ductu, plena plumis et varietate, venit ad Libanum, et tulit medullam cedri.
*H And say: Thus saith the Lord God; A large eagle with great wings, long-limbed, full of feathers, and of variety, came to Libanus, and took away the marrow of the cedar.
Ver. 3. A large eagle. Nabuchodonosor, king of Babylon. Ch. — The multitude of his subjects, and his rapid and cruel conquests, are designated. C. — He spoils the vineyard of Jerusalem, notwithstanding the Jews had applied to another eagle, the king of Egypt. v. 12. W. — Libanus. That is, Jerusalem; (Ch.) or invaded the country, (C.) entering by Libanus. H. — Cedar. King Jechonias, (Ch.) and his nobles, (4 Kin. xxiv. 11.) with the most precious effects.

17:4 Summitatem frondium ejus avulsit, et transportavit eam in terram Chanaan : in urbe negotiatorum posuit illam.
*H He cropped off the top of the twigs thereof: and carried it away into the land of Chanaan, and he set it in a city of merchants.
Ver. 4. Twigs. The young king and his officers, who had scarcely got established. C. — Chanaan. This name, which signifies traffic, is not taken here for Palestine, but for Chaldea; and the city of merchants here mentioned is Babylon. Ch. — It was so corrupt as to deserve this appellation, as Rome was afterwards styled Babylon. Its situation was very favourable to traffic, and its dominions were very extensive. C.
τὰ ἄκρα τῆς ἁπαλότητος ἀπέκνισε, καὶ ἤνεγκεν αὐτὰ εἰς γῆν Χαναὰν, εἰς πόλιν τετειχισμένην ἔθετο αὐτά.

17:5 Et tulit de semine terrae, et posuit illud in terra pro semine, ut firmaret radicem super aquas multas : in superficie posuit illud.
*H And he took of the seed of the land, and put it in the ground for seed, that it might take a firm root over many waters: he planted it on the surface of the earth.
Ver. 5. Land. Sedecias, whom he made king. Ch. — He was brother of the dethroned king, and had every prospect of reigning long, if he had proved faithful. C.
Καὶ ἔλαβεν ἀπὸ τοῦ σπέρματος τῆς γῆς, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτὸ εἰς τὸ πεδίον φυτὸν ἐφʼ ὕδατι πολλῷ, ἐπιβλεπόμενον ἐταξεν αὐτό.
וַ/יִּקַּח֙ מִ/זֶּ֣רַע הָ/אָ֔רֶץ וַֽ/יִּתְּנֵ֖/הוּ בִּ/שְׂדֵה זָ֑רַע קָ֚ח עַל מַ֣יִם רַבִּ֔ים צַפְצָפָ֖ה שָׂמֽ/וֹ
17:6 Cumque germinasset, crevit in vineam latiorem, humili statura, respicientibus ramis ejus ad eam, et radices ejus sub illa erant : facta est ergo vinea, et fructificavit in palmites, et emisit propagines.
*H And it sprung up and grew into a spreading vine of low stature, and the branches thereof looked towards him: and the roots thereof were under him. So it became a vine, and grew into branches, and shot forth sprigs.
Ver. 6. Towards him. Nabuchodonosor, to whom Sedecias swore allegiance. Ch. — Lit. "to it," eam, the eagle. H. — The dominions of Sedecias were extensive, but weak, and dependant on a foreign king.
Καὶ ἀνέτειλε, καὶ ἐγένετο εἰς ἄμπελον ἀσθενοῦσαν καὶ μικρὰν, τοῦ ἐπιφαίνεσθαι αὐτὴν τὰ κλήματα αὐτῆς ἐπʼ αὐτό· καὶ ῥίζαι αὐτῆς ὑποκάτω αὐτῆς ἦσαν· καὶ ἐγένετο εἰς ἄμπελον, καὶ ἐποίησεν ἀπώρυγας, καὶ ἐξέτεινε τὴν ἀναδενδράδα αὐτῆς.

17:7 Et facta est aquila altera grandis, magnis alis, multisque plumis : et ecce vinea ista quasi mittens radices suas ad eam, palmites suos extendit ad illam, ut irrigaret eam de areolis germinis sui.
*H And there was another large eagle, with great wings, and many feathers: and behold this vine, bending as it were her roots towards him, stretched forth her branches to him, that he might water it by the furrows of her plantation.
Ver. 7. Eagle. The king of Egypt, (Ch.) Vaphres, who came at the request of Sedecias, to oppose the Chaldeans, but was routed; and they returned to the siege of Jerusalem. Jer. xxxvii. 4. — Plantation, as the waters of the Nile were conducted to different parts by ditches. Deut. xi. 10.
Καὶ ἐγένετο ἀετὸς ἕτερος μέγας, μεγαλοπτέρυγος πολὺς ὄνυξι· καὶ ἰδοὺ ἡ ἄμπελος αὕτη περιπεπλεγμένη πρὸς αὐτὸν, καὶ ῥίζαι αὐτῆς πρὸς αὐτὸν, καὶ τὰ κλήματα αὐτῆς ἐξαπέστειλεν αὐτῷ, τοῦ ποτίσαι αὐτὴν σὺν τῷ βόλῳ τῆς φυτείας αὐτῆς.

17:8 In terra bona super aquas multas plantata est, ut faciat frondes, et portet fructum, ut sit in vineam grandem.
It was planted in a good ground upon many waters, that it might bring forth branches, and bear fruit, that it might become a large vine.
Εἰς πεδίον καλὸν ἐφʼ ὕδατι πολλῶ αὕτη πιαίνεται, τοῦ ποιεῖν βλαστοὺς, καὶ φέρειν καρπὸν, τοῦ εἶναι εἰς ἄμπελον μεγάλην.
אֶל שָׂ֥דֶה טּ֛וֹב אֶל מַ֥יִם רַבִּ֖ים הִ֣יא שְׁתוּלָ֑ה לַ/עֲשׂ֤וֹת עָנָף֙ וְ/לָ/שֵׂ֣את פֶּ֔רִי לִ/הְי֖וֹת לְ/גֶ֥פֶן אַדָּֽרֶת
17:9 Dic : Haec dicit Dominus Deus : Ergone prosperabitur ? nonne radices ejus evellet, et fructus ejus distringet, et siccabit omnes palmites germinis ejus, et arescet, et non in brachio grandi, neque in populo multo, ut evelleret eam radicitus ?
*H Say thou: Thus saith the Lord God: Shall it prosper then? shall he not pull up the roots thereof, and strip off its fruit, and dry up all the branches it hath shot forth, and make it wither: and this without a strong arm, or many people to pluck it up by the root?
Ver. 9. Prosper. Will God countenance perfidy? C. — "Faith must be kept even with enemies." S. Jer. — Arm. The conquest did not cost the Chaldeans much. Sedecias fled by night, but was soon taken. 4 K. xxv. 6. C.
Διατοῦτο εἰπὸν, τάδε λέγει Κύριος, εἰ κατευθυνεῖ; οὐχὶ αἱ ῥίζαι τῆς ἁπαλότητος αὐτῆς καὶ ὁ καρπὸς σαπήσεται; καὶ ξηρανθήσεται πάντα τὰ προανατέλλοντα αὐτῆς, καὶ οὐκ ἐν βραχίονι μεγάλῳ, οὐδὲ ἐν λαῷ πολλῷ, τοῦ ἐκσπᾶσαι αὐτὴν ἐκ ῥιζῶν αὐτῆς.

17:10 Ecce plantata est : ergone prosperabitur ? nonne, cum tetigerit eam ventus urens, siccabitur, et in areis germinis sui arescet ?
Behold, it is planted: shall it prosper then? shall it not be dried up when the burning wind shall touch it, and shall it not wither in the furrows where it grew?
Καὶ ἰδοὺ πιαίνεται· μὴ κατευθυνεῖ; οὐχὶ ἅμα τῷ ἅψεσθαι αὐτῆς ἄνεμον τὸν καύσωνα ξηρανθήσεται; σὺν τῷ βόλῳ ἀνατολῆς αὐτῆς ξηρανθήσεται.
וְ/הִנֵּ֥ה שְׁתוּלָ֖ה הֲ/תִצְלָ֑ח הֲ/לוֹא֩ כְ/גַ֨עַת בָּ֜/הּ ר֤וּחַ הַ/קָּדִים֙ תִּיבַ֣שׁ יָבֹ֔שׁ עַל עֲרֻגֹ֥ת צִמְחָ֖/הּ תִּיבָֽשׁ
17:11 Et factum est verbum Domini ad me, dicens :
And the word of the Lord came to me, saying:
Καὶ ἐγένετο λόγος Κυρίου πρὸς μὲ, λέγων,
וַ/יְהִ֥י דְבַר יְהוָ֖ה אֵלַ֥/י לֵ/אמֹֽר
17:12 Dic ad domum exasperantem : Nescitis quid ista significent ? Dic : Ecce venit rex Babylonis in Jerusalem, et assumet regem et principes ejus, et adducet eos ad semetipsum in Babylonem.
*H Say to the provoking house: Know you not what these things mean? Tell them: Behold the king of Babylon cometh to Jerusalem: and he shall take away the king and the princes thereof and carry them with him to Babylon.
Ver. 12. Shall, or, "hath taken," &c. (Ch.) as also (v. 13.) Sedecias was seized five years after. C. viii. 1. Jechonias, the princes, mighty warriors, (v. 13.) and expert artists, had been taken away six years before, with the prophet. Prot. "is come,...and hath taken," &c. H.
υἱὲ ἀνθρώπου, εἰπὸν δὴ πρὸς τὸν οἶκον τὸν παραπικραίνοντα, οὐκ ἐπίστασθε τί ἦν ταῦτα; εἰπὸν, ὅταν ἔλθῃ βασιλεὺς Βαβυλῶνος ἐπὶ Ἱερουσαλὴμ, καὶ λήψεται τὸν βασιλέα αὐτῆς καὶ τοὺς ἄρχοντας αὐτῆς, καὶ ἄξῃ αὐτοὺς πρὸς ἑαυτὸν εἰς Βαβυλῶνα.
אֱמָר נָא֙ לְ/בֵ֣ית הַ/מֶּ֔רִי הֲ/לֹ֥א יְדַעְתֶּ֖ם מָה אֵ֑לֶּה אֱמֹ֗ר הִנֵּה בָ֨א מֶֽלֶךְ בָּבֶ֤ל יְרוּשָׁלִַ֨ם֙ וַ/יִּקַּ֤ח אֶת מַלְכָּ/הּ֙ וְ/אֶת שָׂרֶ֔י/הָ וַ/יָּבֵ֥א אוֹתָ֛/ם אֵלָ֖י/ו בָּבֶֽלָ/ה
17:13 Et tollet de semine regni, ferietque cum eo foedus, et ab eo accipiet jusjurandum. Sed et fortes terrae tollet,
And he shall take one of the king's seed, and make a covenant with him, and take an oath of him. Yea, and he shall take away the mighty men of the land,
Καὶ λήψεται ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος τῆς βασιλείας, καὶ διαθήσεται πρὸς αὐτὸν διαθήκην, καὶ εἰσάξει αὐτὸν ἐν ἀρᾷ καὶ τοὺς ἡγεμόνας τῆς γῆς λήψεται,
וַ/יִּקַּח֙ מִ/זֶּ֣רַע הַ/מְּלוּכָ֔ה וַ/יִּכְרֹ֥ת אִתּ֖/וֹ בְּרִ֑ית וַ/יָּבֵ֤א אֹת/וֹ֙ בְּ/אָלָ֔ה וְ/אֶת אֵילֵ֥י הָ/אָ֖רֶץ לָקָֽח
17:14 ut sit regnum humile, et non elevetur, sed custodiat pactum ejus, et servet illud.
That it may be a low kingdom and not lift itself up, but keep his covenant and observe it.
τοῦ γενέσθαι εἰς βασιλείαν ἀσθενῆ, τὸ καθόλου μὴ ἐπαίρεσθαι, τοῦ φυλάσσειν τὴν διαθήκην αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἱστάνειν αὐτήν.

17:15 Qui recedens ab eo misit nuntios ad Aegyptum, ut daret sibi equos et populum multum : numquid prosperabitur, vel consequetur salutem, qui fecit haec ? et qui dissolvit pactum, numquid effugiet ?
But he hath revolted from him and sent ambassadors to Egypt, that it might give him horses, and much people. And shall he that hath done thus prosper, or be saved? and shall he escape that hath broken the covenant?
Καὶ ἀποστήσεται ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ, τοῦ ἐξαποστέλλειν ἀγγέλους ἑαυτοῦ εἰς Αἴγυπτον, τοῦ δοῦναι αὐτῷ ἵππους καὶ λαὸν πολύν· εἰ κατευθυνεῖ, εἰ διασωθήσεται ὁ ποιῶν ἐναντία; καὶ παραβαίνων διαθήκην εἰ διασωθήσεται;
וַ/יִּמְרָד בּ֗/וֹ לִ/שְׁלֹ֤חַ מַלְאָכָי/ו֙ מִצְרַ֔יִם לָֽ/תֶת ל֥/וֹ סוּסִ֖ים וְ/עַם רָ֑ב הֲ/יִצְלָ֤ח הֲ/יִמָּלֵט֙ הָ/עֹשֵׂ֣ה אֵ֔לֶּה וְ/הֵפֵ֥ר בְּרִ֖ית וְ/נִמְלָֽט
17:16 Vivo ego, dicit Dominus Deus, quoniam in loco regis qui constituit eum regem, cujus fecit irritum juramentum, et solvit pactum quod habebat cum eo, in medio Babylonis morietur.
*H As I live, saith the Lord God: In the place where the king dwelleth that made him king, whose oath he hath made void, and whose covenant he broke, even in the midst of Babylon shall he die.
Ver. 16. Die. He had sworn fidelity, and was justly punished, dying blind, and in prison. C. xii. W.
Ζῶ ἐγὼ, λέγει Κύριος, ἐὰν μὴ ἐν τόπῳ ὁ βασιλεὺς ὁ βασιλεύσας αὐτὸν, ὃς ἠτίμωσε τὴν ἀράν μου, καὶ ὃς παρέβη τὴν διαθήκην μου, μετʼ αὐτοῦ ἐν μέσῳ Βαβυλῶνος τελευτήσει,
חַי אָ֗נִי נְאֻם֮ אֲדֹנָ֣/י יְהוִה֒ אִם לֹ֗א בִּ/מְקוֹם֙ הַ/מֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ הַ/מַּמְלִ֣יךְ אֹת֔/וֹ אֲשֶׁ֤ר בָּזָה֙ אֶת אָ֣לָת֔/וֹ וַ/אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֵפֵ֖ר אֶת בְּרִית֑/וֹ אִתּ֥/וֹ בְ/תוֹךְ בָּבֶ֖ל יָמֽוּת
17:17 Et non in exercitu grandi, neque in populo multo, faciet contra eum Pharao praelium : in jactu aggeris, et in exstructione vallorum, ut interficiat animas multas.
*H And not with a great army, nor with much people shall Pharao fight against him: when he shall cast up mounts, and build forts, to cut off many souls.
Ver. 17. Souls. Some refer this to Pharao; others to the enemy. The former did not attempt to surround the besiegers, but after losing a battle retired. C. xxx. 21. C.
καὶ οὐκ ἐν δυνάμει μεγάλῃ οὐδὲ ἐν ὄχλῳ πολλῷ ποιήσει πρὸς αὐτὸν Φαραὼ πόλεμον, ἐν χαρακοβολίᾳ καὶ ἐν οἰκοδομῇ βελοστάσεων, τοῦ ἐξᾶραι ψυχάς.

17:18 Spreverat enim juramentum, ut solveret foedus, et ecce dedit manum suam : et cum omnia haec fecerit, non effugiet.
*H For he had despised the oath, breaking his covenant, and behold he hath given his hand: and having done all these things, he shall not escape.
Ver. 18. Hand. Swearing perhaps to both (H.) the Egyptian and to the Chaldean monarch.
Καὶ ἠτίμωσεν ὁρκωμοσίαν τοῦ παραβῆναι διαθήκην· καὶ ἰδοὺ δέδωκα τὴν χεῖρα αὐτοῦ, καὶ πάντα ταῦτα ἐποίησεν αὐτῷ, μὴ σωθήσεται.
וּ/בָזָ֥ה אָלָ֖ה לְ/הָפֵ֣ר בְּרִ֑ית וְ/הִנֵּ֨ה נָתַ֥ן יָד֛/וֹ וְ/כָל אֵ֥לֶּה עָשָׂ֖ה לֹ֥א יִמָּלֵֽט
17:19 Propterea haec dicit Dominus Deus : Vivo ego, quoniam juramentum quod sprevit, et foedus quod praevaricatus est, ponam in caput ejus.
Therefore thus saith the Lord God: As I live, I will lay upon his head the oath he hath despised, and the covenant he hath broken.
Διατοῦτο εἰπὸν, τάδε λέγει Κύριος, ζῶ ἐγὼ, ἐὰν μὴ τὴν ὁρκωμοσίαν μου ἣν ἠτίμωσε, καὶ τὴν διαθήκην μου ἣν παρέβη, καὶ δώσω αὐτὴν εἰς κεφαλὴν αὐτοῦ.

17:20 Et expandam super eum rete meum, et comprehendetur in sagena mea : et adducam eum in Babylonem, et judicabo eum ibi in praevaricatione qua despexit me.
*H And I will spread my net over him, and he shall be taken in my net: and I will bring him into Babylon, and will judge him there for the transgression by which he hath despised me.

17:21 Et omnes profugi ejus, cum universo agmine suo, gladio cadent : residui autem in omnem ventum dispergentur : et scietis quia ego Dominus locutus sum.
And all his fugitives with all his bands shall fall by the sword: and the residue shall be scattered into every wind: and you shall know that I the Lord have spoken.
Ἐν πάσῃ παρατάξει αὐτοῦ ἐν ῥομφαίᾳ πεσοῦνται· καὶ τοὺς καταλοίπους εἰς πάντα ἄνεμον διασπερῶ, καὶ ἐπιγνώσεσθε διότι ἐγὼ Κύριος λελάληκα.
וְ/אֵ֨ת כָּל מברח/ו מִבְרָחָ֤י/ו בְּ/כָל אֲגַפָּי/ו֙ בַּ/חֶ֣רֶב יִפֹּ֔לוּ וְ/הַ/נִּשְׁאָרִ֖ים לְ/כָל ר֣וּחַ יִפָּרֵ֑שׂוּ וִ/ידַעְתֶּ֕ם כִּ֛י אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה דִּבַּֽרְתִּי
17:22 Haec dicit Dominus Deus : Et sumam ego de medulla cedri sublimis, et ponam : de vertice ramorum ejus tenerum distringam, et plantabo super montem excelsum et eminentem.
*H Thus saith the Lord God: I myself will take of the marrow of the high cedar, and will set it: I will crop off a tender twig from the top of the branches thereof, and I will plant it on a mountain high and eminent.
Ver. 22. Cedar. Of the Royal stock of David. — Twig. Jesus Christ, whom God hath planted in Mount Sion, that is, the high mountain of his Church, to which all nations flow. Ch. — The Jews in vain apply this to Zorobabel or to the Machabees. Their power was never great enough to verify these expressions. C. — But Christ has united in his Church all the birds, or those who have strength enough to raise themselves above earthly things. S. Jer. Theod. &c. — The kingdom of Sedecias and that of Nabuchodonosor prospered not, or was soon at an end: Christ remains for ever. W.
Διότι τάδε λέγει Κύριος, καὶ λήψομαι ἐγὼ ἐκ τῶν ἐκλεκτῶν τῆς κέδρου ἐκ κορυφῆς, καρδίας αὐτῶν ἀποκνιῶ, καὶ καταφυτεύσω ἐγὼ ἐπʼ ὄρος ὑψηλὸν,
כֹּ֤ה אָמַר֙ אֲדֹנָ֣/י יְהוִ֔ה וְ/לָקַ֣חְתִּי אָ֗נִי מִ/צַּמֶּ֧רֶת הָ/אֶ֛רֶז הָ/רָמָ֖ה וְ/נָתָ֑תִּי מֵ/רֹ֤אשׁ יֹֽנְקוֹתָי/ו֙ רַ֣ךְ אֶקְטֹ֔ף וְ/שָׁתַ֣לְתִּי אָ֔נִי עַ֥ל הַר גָּבֹ֖הַ וְ/תָלֽוּל
17:23 In monte sublimi Israel plantabo illud, et erumpet in germen, et faciet fructum, et erit in cedrum magnam : et habitabunt sub ea omnes volucres, et universum volatile sub umbra frondium ejus nidificabit :
On the high mountains of Israel will I plant it, and it shall shoot forth into branches and shall bear fruit, and it shall become a great cedar: and all birds shall dwell under it, and every fowl shall make its nest under the shadow of the branches thereof.
καὶ κρεμάσω αὐτὸν ἐν ὄρει μετεώρῳ Ἰσραήλ· καὶ καταφυτεύσω, καὶ ἐξοίσει βλαστὸν, καὶ ποιήσει καρπὸν, καὶ ἔσται εἰς κέδρον μεγάλην· καὶ ἀναπαύσεται ὑποκάτω αὐτοῦ πᾶν ὄρνεον, καὶ πᾶν πετεινὸν ὑπὸ τὴν σκιὰν αὐτοῦ ἀναπαύσεται· τὰ κλήματα αὐτοῦ ἀποκατασταθήσεται.
בְּ/הַ֨ר מְר֤וֹם יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶשְׁתֳּלֶ֔/נּוּ וְ/נָשָׂ֤א עָנָף֙ וְ/עָ֣שָׂה פֶ֔רִי וְ/הָיָ֖ה לְ/אֶ֣רֶז אַדִּ֑יר וְ/שָׁכְנ֣וּ תַחְתָּ֗י/ו כֹּ֚ל צִפּ֣וֹר כָּל כָּנָ֔ף בְּ/צֵ֥ל דָּלִיּוֹתָ֖י/ו תִּשְׁכֹּֽנָּה
17:24 et scient omnia ligna regionis quia ego Dominus humiliavi lignum sublime, et exaltavi lignum humile ; et siccavi lignum viride, et frondere feci lignum aridum. Ego Dominus locutus sum, et feci.
*H And all the trees of the country shall know that I the Lord have brought down the high tree, and exalted the low tree: and have dried up the green tree, and have caused the dry tree to flourish. I the Lord have spoken and have done it.
Ver. 24. High and green denote Sedecias; low and dry Jechonias, who was exalted at Babylon, while his rival was hurled down from his present high estate. The prophets speak of that as past, which God has decreed. See Jer. xxii. 30. C.
Καὶ γνώσονται πάντα τὰ ξύλα τοῦ πεδίου, διότι ἐγὼ Κύριος ὁ ταπεινῶν ξύλον ὑψηλὸν, καὶ ὑψῶν ξύλον ταπεινὸν, καὶ ξηραίνων ξύλον χλωρὸν, καὶ ἀναθάλλων ξύλον ξηρόν· ἐγὼ Κύριος λελάληκα, καὶ ποιήσω.
וְֽ/יָדְע֞וּ כָּל עֲצֵ֣י הַ/שָּׂדֶ֗ה כִּ֣י אֲנִ֤י יְהוָה֙ הִשְׁפַּ֣לְתִּי עֵ֣ץ גָּבֹ֗הַ הִגְבַּ֨הְתִּי֙ עֵ֣ץ שָׁפָ֔ל הוֹבַ֨שְׁתִּי֙ עֵ֣ץ לָ֔ח וְ/הִפְרַ֖חְתִּי עֵ֣ץ יָבֵ֑שׁ אֲנִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה דִּבַּ֥רְתִּי וְ/עָשִֽׂיתִי
